  • The Treadmill Desk, Helping to Fight Obesity in the Workplace

      Mr. Cheeseburger

Ever think about working out, while at work, but then the day ends and you’re no longer interested? Well that might change.  A study by Dr. James Levine, an endocrinologist, showed people burn more calories by doing simple things such as walking to the copy machine, or pacing around.  That concept is being applied to a growing number of small business and offices across the country, by having employees get a workout while working, with what is now called the Treadmill Desk.  Tasks such as reading reports or using the computer can be done while walking on a treadmill.  Here's a short clip about it:

As I sit and type this, I can’t help but think how different it would be if I were to be walking and typing.  It will definitely cut back the number of days I go to the gym and can help burn calories without missing a beat at work.   According to Dr. Levine, there is a future in working while being active, and has had his team in the MAYO clinic do that for the past 5 years. For example when they have a conference, they talk about business while walking around a track field.  Dr. Levine says his revolutionaty machine and concept will help with the growing obesity in the work place and help companies save millions in healthcare costs.

Do you think a treadmill desk will be an effective strategy in helping fight obesity?Would you use a Treadmill Desk at work?

It seems like a good concepts.  The people look a little goofy though.  I think I would get distracted and fall off the thing.  Too much to concentrate on all at once.

  • PoetMcChick@xanga

I would totally use it. I couldn't stay up all 10 hours of the day, but if I had something where I could raise my desk like that and turn the treadmill on, I would totally use it for much of the day...

    @kedward6@xanga - I totally agree! I'm a klutz! I'd fall off.

  • socially_a_reject@xanga

    Love that idea!

I would definitely use one because so often I sit at my desk all day wishing I could be up moving around!

But...it would have to be at a pretty low setting for me to be able to type and walk at the same time without falling on my face.

For some people it might be effective, but not for others. Personally I prefer walking outdoor to the treadmill. The treadmill makes me dizzy and there is no way I could read on a treadmill. More power to whoever wants to do that.

  • PsychedelicBreakfast@xanga

I personally do not like this idea. There's no way I could do it. When I'm exericising I don't want to be thinking deeply about anything. "Hey, read these reports and give me your thoughts once you get off the treadmill." There's no way my mind would be focused on the reports. That's why people read magazines when they use a stationary bike or walk on a treadmill. It takes very little brain power to flip through a mag. And to type while walking? No thanks.

I would be distracted by it. I like to put all my energy into working, OR all my energy into exercising. I would be less productive if I were doing both at once.

  • makabayan@xanga

    use stairs instead of elevs!!!!!

at work we have this hulahoop that I play around and my work friends just laugh at me lol

I think it is a pretty good idea. As long as they don't make the treadmill mandatory for the full eight hours of work. I think having the option to sit, stand or walk would be a great help to motivation and productivity. If my apartment were bigger, I'd want a treadmill.

  • Erika_Steele@xanga

I suppose I would if I had a job where I had to stay stuck at a desk all day, but I don't so the concept is just funny to me.

  • ToxicWishes@xanga

Oh heck yeahs I'd use a treadmill desk. It looks interesting and like it could be fun. I watch tv while I run, so why not make it something productive (like work) instead of having my eyes glued to the tube?

[of course, that would all be contingent on me having a desk job, which I'm so desperately trying to avoid]

  • breakingthemold@datingish

I'd totally use it. Again not have it mandatory for all hours of the work day but at least an option. I read or listen to audio books while on the treadmill so this could be just an extension of that.

  • SeitekiChibiNeko@xanga

they should use a treadmill to power the copy machines ;)
imagine how much of a workout 100 copies would be LOL

  • afburd@xanga

I can't see the clip because it's blocked at my work, but I found this blog in the the Top Blogs area and it caught my eye because I saw this contraption yesterday on Fox News.  I actually think it's a great idea and would love to try it.  Some days I spend upwards of 16 hours seated at a computer, so I would love to be able to walk at 2mph while working...a great calorie burner and mood-lifter I bet!

  • blogging_or_therapy@xanga

It may take some practice, If I am engrossed in my work I may forget to walk and fall off, but I would definitely like to be able to be active while working at my desk. That is one of my biggest problems, I have a home office and I have to get up every little while and move around, hate being chained to the desk all day.

  • bbheart2heart@xanga

Sounds like a good plan if you had a job where you were able to do it. Think I'm lucky enough that I get up from my desk a lot and move around. Some days, I am stuck to my desk so, if I had a treadmill somewhere in the office, that would be neat, as I could hop on it for a moment...

  • meinpa@xanga

Thats a Great Idea, I would definitly use it!  I am sure it would take some getting used to. But there would be alot of people that would choose not to use them, there are alot of Lazy people out there! lol

  • dan@xanga

This looks pretty cool.  We need one in Xanga HQ!

  • vwagenjetta@xanga

That thing is BRILLIANT! Of course, trying to concentrate on your writing while walking might be a bit of a task...

  • relinquishing_junk@xanga

    this is so american.

if you would just fix your intake, lower the junk and decrease the portionsizes in stores... i really believe your main problem is just what goes in. as long as you don't fix that, you can tred what you want but it won't make any major changes.

  • onlyFORaLILwhile@xanga

how to people even become obese in the first place?

    seriously. I don't know.

and I'd be too lazy for a treadmill desk. I'd be pissed if they were required.

  • Cliffycliffz@xanga

better than nothing but I worry about injuries and the quality of work being completed... nothing substitutes regular eating patterns and exercise and all

  • slinky@xanga
    yay!

I walk on breaks as far as my feet will take me and then with my Corgi in the mornings and evenings. Still not enough but better than nothing. This is great info and needed,,thanks for sharing

  • GapintheVoid@xanga

I wish I had something like this, and I wish the girls in my office wouldn't think I was crazy if I brought in one of those large exercise balls. I'm a graphic designer and I sit A LOT. I tried to get my computer switched out with another one so I'd be farther from my phone so I would have to get up to answer it but that didn't fly. I get walking in through walking the hospital where I work though... I just wish we had a gym facility on the campus.

  • Faith14@xanga

Personally I would be a little uneasy working and walking at the same time.  I'm good at coordination..but walking and working feels weird....  It's a KICKASS IDEA THOUGH!!!!    People in this country really need to change something about their lifestyle..

  • hillaryaxxo@xanga

I really cannot believe that America has come to this point. If you eat moderately, and just include a few vegetables here and there and go jogging for about 15 minutes everyday, you won't have to battle obesity, let alone just pudginess. Why do companies have to spend extra money putting treadmills when Americans could just save money by eating less! I don't understand! My mother rarely has time to exercise and eat "healthy" but she does control her portion and she is tiny as a mouse.
