    I personally dont think so.

I heard on the radio not long ago that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill work out at the same gym together.  He was asking what she was always doing because she was never sweating.  So one day he joined her doing pilates.  And then he said he couldnt walk for a week!

Sometimes I think if I am not sweating during cardio that I am not doing anything tough enough. I am not a heavy sweater, so it takes that much more for me to sweat. My boyfriend however, can leave the gym soaked. Or rather, he has to change clothes before he leaves.

  • BEAUTIFULCINNAMONQUEEN@xanga

No, I don't always sweat, but I'll be sore the next day so I know I worked out hard.

  • AmberBelen@xanga

I'm sure sweating is related to genetics, so it should vary from person to person.  However, I've also read from several fitness sources that if you don't sweat, you're not working out hard enough to lose weight.  You may be working out and burning calories in the process, but in order to lose weight, you have to have broken a sweat at some point during your workout.  I don't know if it's true but it makes some sense to me.

@AmberBelen@xanga - I agree with that.  If you're not sweating, you're not really trying.

I always have to raise an eyebrow at the girls who go to the gym with makeup, perfect hair, inappropriate "casual sporty" workout attire (like flipflops!  I cannot tell you how many times I've seen girls at the gym with flipflops), and who never even get glossy.  They spend about 10 minutes going at a snail's pace on the elliptical and think they've accomplished something.  I think too many people pretend to try in order to attract potential mates (who are likely as undedicated to exercise as they are... because really, how is that attractive to anyone else?).

I think if I don't sweat...I am probably not working hard enough.

    Yeah I sweat enough...lol

  • la_faerie_joyeuse@xanga

It depends on what you're doing. For cardio, yes, absolutely. For strength or flexibility training, no, not necessarily.

@methodElevated@xanga - That's a huge pet peeve of mine! wtf?

  • streetcarnamed__desire@xanga

No. As long as you're heart rate is up, then you're good.

  • AmberBelen@xanga

@methodElevated@xanga - Ha! That is so true. I don't even think it's about finding potential mates because I'm sure half of those men and women have several "partners" on the side.  I think they just consider it a place to see and be seen rather than a center for health and wellness which can be a bummer for the rest of us who actually do perceive it as such.

  • laytexduckie@xanga

You don't have to sweat in order to consider it a good workout. Hell, some people I know sweat as much as I do working out when all they do is walk up a flight of stairs.

  • Mrs_Baker

I have read that the amount you sweat is directly related to how fit you are, in that the person who is more in shape will sweat sooner during their work out. I assume that they meant a cardio workout, because strength training or classes like yoga or pilates are not usually very sweat-inducing.
The example in the article was, Lance Armstrong starts sweating as soon as he starts moving on a bicycle.

  • ccarothers@xanga

Yes, I need to sweat when I work out and when I am working out really hard it sure seems like I sweat like a 500 lb man.

  • kmiahali

i think sweating is key in working out. and yes, i sweat more than any person can imagine. when people look at me they ask me if i splashed water on my face.

  • bryangoodrich@xanga

Unless you're extremely old, yeah, you should be sweating to have a good workout; otherwise, you're intensity is far too low to get any real benefits.

but that does not mean sweat is a metric. I can sweat a lot for doing relatively little, but I'm a heavy sweater, and it takes a lot for my roommate to sweat buckets, if ever. The point is that your body will naturally try and cool itself down when you get your core temperature up, and to do that, you need to get your system reved up, and that requires a certain intensity.

  • ican__doit@xanga

I always feel better if I sweat, like I'm doing something. However, I don't think you need to be absolutely drenched to get a good workout, nor do I think that the amount of sweat says how good your workout was, seeing as I can wait for the shuttle in the Florida sun for five minutes and sweat. :-p

  • kash

i think you need to sweat to get a good work out but then again I sweat pools.

  • shes_lump@xanga

i sweat during cardio but not during yoga or pilates.

  • Erika_Steele@xanga

I don't know.  I've always sweated when I work out.   The only time I don't sweat is during one of those relaxing yoga workouts.

  • Reko34@xanga

I am a heavy sweater but no, its not necessary. I train in a basement gym so it can get cold there in the winter. We may not sweat a whole lot then.

  • niez_cho@xanga

    ...swimming?

okay maybe i'm on the wrong channel...

  • dragonsamus@xanga

you dont NEED to sweat but if you work out then it will happen. i am a sweater and i hate it! well, i hate it because it soaks my shirt and when i leave the gym at night the sweat become freezing cold. yikes! i need to work on my sweating. a buddy of mine told me that if i ran more then eventually i would sweat less because my body would be use to the extra heat be it true or not. eh.

  • blowme_raspberries@xanga

yeah i need to sweat in order to have a good work out. i think it's just me hahah. and LOL, how much/how fast do i need to sweat to be considered a heavy sweater? yeah i'd be soaked and need a change of clothes after working out in the gym but hey i don't consider that as heavy sweating! haha.

    @laytexduckie@xanga - LMAO.

  • x_anabell_x@xanga

NO. you don't have to sweat to have a good work out. my mom sweats insanely when she works out...i might get a little perspiration on my forehead and that's it. i'm just not a sweater. i think that would be a very inaccurate way to judge the effectiveness of one's workout.

  • racheek@xanga

i sweat alot and its so embarassing when you look like youve just come out of the shower, but really yovue just been on teh elliptical for a bit.. : (

  • gymbum20@xanga

Sweating is good. It cleans out toxins in your body and if you're doing hard cardio, you should sweat. Maybe not weight lifting so much but even then, if you're working hard, you may get "glossy" (as mentioned above -- good description ;)).
I love to sweat at the gym because for me, when I sweat, I know I'm working hard enough. I'm on a hard work out program right now and I can't believe how much I sweat! It's CRAZY - and gross, but hey, I'm not at the gym to look pretty.

I do agree though, that people's bodies are different so they sweat differently. lol that sounds funny.
