Yesterday while browsing through YouTube for some quick workout videos, I came across a video that quickly reminded me of my childhood and possibly a reason why obesity runs rampant among children. While watching the clip, I was glad my parents limited my fast food intake and always pushed me to go out and play sports.
That clown was brainwashing kids into believing McDonald's was fun and cool, so "let's play and eat there". It had a catchy tune to keep kids entertained while feeding them all the high in fat, greasy food that came in kid's meals.
I have to admit when I was younger I did have the kid's meals and wanted it often but my parent's didn't believe in spending money on kid meals when we had perfectly good home cooked food. As I type this, I'm watching the video and all those memories are rushing back and I'm shaking my head. Oh I'm also afraid of clowns and hate them very much.
Did you eat a lot of fast food as a child? Would these commercials work on kids today? Why or why not?
I didn't eat a lot of fast food as a kid...and when I did, I wanted the toy!
I don't know how well commericals will work on kids today because over half of them are bitching that's there food is more real beef and/or less bad for you then the other. Not as as many character commericals, though they come up.
I ate fast food a lot as a kid. Every week after swimming for an hour I'd have a cheeseburger or so and then every now and then a kids meal because I wanted the toy. I think the only reason I wasn't fat was that I ate home food day and loved to run around as a kid..
I'd say I ate an average amount of fast food as a kid. I loved the toys.
I don't think commercials really work. Haha, like, I'm just imagining if McDonalds featured celery in their commercials. I still wouldn't want it, despite how catchy the tune is. I hate celery. o_O
I didn't eat much fast food. My parents probably subscribed to the same train of thought as yours. And mostly the toy was cooler than the actual food :)
Now, I think I actually have a biased view of McDonald's in particular because my boyfriend's family owns a chain of them. I don't really see it as bad anymore.
Fast food tastes good =) But I didn't eat it that much...
And commercials like the one you showed would be totally ignored because 1. it's annoying and 2. the song is really bad
Wow. That commercial is frightening. The happier the clown, the more horrifying they are. But I could use a quarter pounder about now. ;)
I would eat there about once a month when I was a kid. It was not a regular occurance for my brother or I to eat at a fast food restaurant.
my parents' eating habits are so unhealthy that it's beyond disgusting. they never told me what's healthy and not; basically fed me whatever that's food. i ended up being teased and bullied in school for being the fat ugly kid. i am forever traumatized by childhood events which led me into depression.
i wish my parents were like yours.. sigh =(
my family limited the amount of tv i watched & i do the same with my daughter. tv was never a major thing in my family life. so i remember the commercials a little, i don't think i was overly affected by them. fast food was "treat" & it's something my family got maybe a couple times a month. and that's how we raise our daughter. she never really wants it anyway which is good.
i think that the obesety problem in the country is directly related to too much tv. 1. your butt is parked in front of the tv NOT getting excercise 2. tons of commercials for fattening unhealthy food 3. the commercials promote a culture of indulgence. 'you work hard for a living, so go ahead & have that gallon of ice cream, you deserve it!'
that kind of mentality seems to be rampant in so many food commercials. they *know* the food isn't healthy, so they try to convice you that it's ok to justify eating it anyway. and while some indulgence is ok, indulging in chocolate all day long is not. and if someone is sitting in front of the tv watching these commercials, i think they're more likely to rationalize over eating junk food.
I rarely ate fast food as a kid (and eat it rarely now as well). I do think the commercials put pressure on the kids to want to eat there. I mean, all the other kids they see doing it and having fun. Why wouldnt they want to also?
I felt like I was watching some weird public access show...I always imagine what is like to be that person, prancing around in outlandish costumes and making ridiculous faces...it's hilarious..
ANYWAY it is not just kids who are brainwashed. We are tricked into thinking we are buying "Healthy" or Natural things all the time, and they're just another marketing ploy for someone to get rich.
Suprisingly no i didn't. But now, my little brother is getting McDonalds very often. I tell my dad, but he's just ignores it- I'm learning to cook healthy simple things that kids would like, for my brother. He's reaaallly picky though.
I did not eat much fast food when I was a child, it was mainly at birthday parties.
wow! i actually did. i eat it a lot less now: barely. this is so sad, that they target little kids into buying their food and that little kids are part of their marketing scheme. and YES clowns are very scary. i don't even want to know how it ever became McDonald's mascot.
I definitely ate a lot of fast food as a child, and guess where my first job was? You guessed it. In the two years I worked there, I gained ten pounds. But my friends, who had eaten mostly home cooked food until they started working at McDonald's...the weight hit them fast.
I still am guilty to having fast food once or twice a week...but that's nothing compared to what I was eating before...
Now that I'm pregnant with my child, if we eat fast food after she gets to eating solids, I'd get one meal and share it with her...that way shes not always gonna want McDonald's for the toys, as I did, and neither one of us are getting the full calories from a McDonald's meal...but I really wanna give her a better future than I had been given, at least food choice-wise, and I will limit the amount she would be allowed to have. However, I've already made it simple she is to have NO pop...EVER. Not until she's old enough to get it herself.
Well this one's kindof stupid compared to some of the others. McDonald's put out many multi-million dollar commercials I'm sure, who's aim was primarily to influence children.
omg that commercial is so creepy HAHAHA
Ugh, I ate SO much fast food as a kid. I eat it maybe once or twice a month now. =/
To the commercial's credit; they are also encouraging physical activity. :P
I never ate fast food often, but it seems like my family eats it at least once a week now. (I don't live at home so I rarely if ever eat fast food - probably goes along with me being a foodie and craving gourmet haha)
i didn't eat fast food very often when i was little. i guess maybe i wasn't raised in north america? i mean i loved mcdonalds but not too crazy about it.
