  • Overweight People Need Stop Complaining & Shut Up

This is a guest blog submitted by a Healthkicker Reader
**Healthkicker does not promote Anorexia or any other eating disorder.**

I’ve been reading Healthkicker for some time now and I’ve noticed that a lot of “overweight” people love bashing anorexics.  There were a few posts that went up earlier about it and most of the comments were against anorexia and how they don’t appreciate their bodies.

What pisses me off about all these people, mostly women, is they should look in the mirror before judging others.  These overweight commenters talk about eating healthy but they eat mouthfuls of food everyday, and then bitch about trying to lose weight on their Healthkicker/Xanga pages.

All you bashers could take a page from these anorexics (not that I’m for anorexia).  They may suffer from an eating disorder, but they have the determination and will all you overweight people lack.  They’re able to lose weight if they want to; you sit and complain about losing weight but don’t do anything about it.

You want to live healthy?  Cut back on those donuts for breakfast, fast food for lunch and frozen dinners. Learn to cook, or learn to go out for a run.  Spending thirty minutes a day running or light jogging, it might help your heart from clogging from all the crap you put into your body.

Overweight people also complain, anorexics don’t know they’re hurting their bodies because of their mental disorder. If anything you have a mental disorder too.  You know you need to lose weight but you don’t do anything about it.  Instead you hurt yourself by stuffing your face with food.  Losing weight is not hard people, you just make it hard on yourself by sitting back and doing nothing.

So next time you see an anorexic post something about their weight, you better be in optimal health before leaving a comment or judging them.

Should overweight people take care of their own bodies before judging others?  Can over eating be a mental disorder since many can't stop eating?  Why or why not?

Wow. Good thing you said that, cuz I sure don't have the balls!

  • teardownthestars@xanga

i agree with everything you just said 100%

some of the things those people say sicken meand when they complain about being fat, i really want to scream in their face,
"THEN PUT DOWN THE DEEP-FRIED TWINKIE AND GO TO A GYM!!"
  • fried_ryce@xanga

Wow, I never thought of it that way but you make a good point.

I think people in general should worry about themselves before judging others because in some way, they'd be being a hypocrite.  I suppose over eating can be seen as a mental disorder, but at the same time, it might just be a bad habit.

  • flightless___bird@xanga

mhm. that's just being a hypocrite. i think some of them should follow their own advice. overweight people & anorexics are on opposite ends of the spectrum, but in some way they share they same problem -- hurting themselves with an overabundance of food, or lack thereof.

nobody should judge any person on this planet. unless you are PERFECT and have zero problems, etc (which that applies to NO ONE) then you should just think before you speak, or in this case, write .. or at least try not to sound like a hypocrite.

  • iconspiration@xanga

This is a little intense and harsh, if I do say so myself...regardless how much you weigh I'd say you fell into the same trap you're accusing "fat" people of, only you did it in reverse.

No one should judge period, but seeing as that's an inevitability, no one should be here to determine when a person has "the right" to speak about this subject--not all overweight people bash anorexic girls, some just phrase things in that way to see if the shock will get these girls to realize that it's more important to be content with who you are than over-the-top obsessed with appearances, and that's a noble effort and not a bad thing.

Morever, just as anorexia is a mental disorder than pushes these girls to work ever harder to be thinner than thin (and trust me, that's not "willpower"--that's self-torture and it's not as chosen as you seem to believe it is, it isn't pleasant and no one should try to emulate it), some overweight people could "go for a jog or learn how to cook" and still have a hard time losing the weight--metabolism and certain health problems have just as much to do with it. This is a broad statement you make and even though I can get where you're coming from, I don't think it does much for what we should all be striving to do, besides be healthy and happy: accepting ourselves and others as the works-in-progress we are.

We're all free to express our thoughts on something that's taken such a central spot in society regardless whether our own lifestyle proves it--this post is proof of that.

LOL i pretty much agree with you...i just think if you have weight issues to begin with you shouldnt be hating on other people who have similar issues too

  • poltron78@xanga

whoa whoa whoa! Being over weight is still healthier than being anorexic. Sure everyone should respect and love their bodies but it is their body do to whatever they want with it.

  • XxWiltedRosexX@xanga
  • persuasion__usa@xanga
The whole idea's to be healthy.
  • SeitekiChibiNeko@xanga
    Bite me!

um, anorexia is an eating disorder, which is a mental illness. it has nothing to do with "willpower" to be thin, and a lot to do with being mentally ill.

not everyone who is overweight just eats deep-fried twinkies and hates excercising etc. it's not easy to lose weight when your doctors and physical therapists say you're not allowed to exercise, if you do exercise it puts you in a lot of pain, and you have to eat very regularly or your blood sugar drops to the point where you pass out. i know several people that are overweight who have these problems!

  • AllMyNamesAreTaken@xanga

The thing about comparing overweight people with anorexics is that even though anorexics do lose the weight, they do so in an unhealthy way, which is about as bad as not losing the weight at all.

In any case.. being overweight can be caused by more than JUST overeating. There are other factors, just as anorexia is said to be a mental disorder and not just an eating disorder.

People should at least be comfortable & confident with themselves before judging other people... obviously neither heavy folks who complain about their weight nor anorexics are either of those things. Overeating is just as much a mental disorder as anorexia, it's a lack of control.

  • JessxMaxine@xanga
They are both harming their bodies. Both can die and have heart attacks. They hurt their bodies daily. It's not hard to lose weight; and its not hard to feed yourself daily.

They are both in the wrong.
    No one is better.

300 pounds or 87 pounds; its still gross and unheathly.

By the way, if you want the "fat" people to be nicer to the "skinny" people....try not doing what the "fat" people do and attack them.

Its doesnt show growth or make people think, "I shouldnt say such mean things so quickly."

Completely agreed! My room-mate complains about being heavier than her ideal weight, so she has gone on a diet. Yet, every time I head off to the gym (which is free and in our apartment complex) She always says no. And it takes more than losing weight to be healthy.

  • Reko34@xanga

Constatnly eat and purging every meal aren't determination, they are both addictions. Neither one of them should be a model for the other. People who eat and exercise reasonably should be.

  • LetMeGoToo@xanga

Watch out about judging either way. Anorexia is a mental disorder, and terribly unhealthy -- just as deadly (if not more) than obesity -- but the anorexic needs loving support and help. Obesity can be caused by mental health issues as well as physical health issues - many things beyond simple "self control."  It is excruciatingly frustrating for those whose weight problems -- under or overweight -- are caused by issues beyond their control, to be judged, told they are disgusting, or laughed at. It's harsh and rude either way.

  • godofthelost@xanga

    @Reko34@xanga - Agreed.

@SeitekiChibiNeko@xanga - Not everyone at a weight deemed unhealthy or risky is anorexic.  Just because anorexia is an eating disorder doesn't exclude overeating.  How many individuals told by their physicians to stop working out were healthy and active individuals in the first place?  I fully understand that there are exceptions, that some people are incapable of maintaining a healthy weight, but I have a strong hunch that these individuals do not make up 26%(per CDC, % obese individuals in USA) of the population.  I also think that many of the health problems preventing these individuals stem from the individual being overweight or obese.

I do think overeating and being overweight can be labeled as an eating disorder IN SOME CASES.

  • jonchin_19@xanga

there's bein' overweight and then, there is bein' obese

bringin' up to extremes in conflict with each other doesn't really do anything to resolve the issue of HEALTH that both obesity and anorexia present.

to be fair, i have no idea what it is like to be overweight or having an eating disorder so maybe it really is a contentious issue. however, i always thought a health forum was about helping both sides reach a happy inbetween place.

  • iiiNVERSE@xanga

    agreed.

though i do think overeating is just as well as a mental disorder than anorexia. overeating is an eating disorder. and eating disorders aren't as much about food as they are emotions usually.

    but well said post! ;)

  • xMade_To_Measurex@xanga
Approximately 300,000 people per year in the US die of obesity, compared to just 1000 deaths caused by anorexia.

People who are overweight should take a look at themselves before critizing those who are at least trying to lead a healthy lifestyle for 'killing themselves' or 'shortening their lives'.

I am not dismissing the dangers of anorexia & bulimia, however in my opinion, if seriously overweight people can look in the mirror and not realize that they need to do something about their weight, or as seems to increasingly be the case - realize they are obese but, to put it bluntly, cannot be bothered to get of their arses and do something about it, then it is most definitely a mental disorder.
  • TakingxOverxMe@xanga

Anorexia isn't always about losing weight.  It's about something deeper than just weight loss.

  • ThatGilbertGirl@xanga
    nuh-uh

Are you aware that there are diseases and conditions out there that make it harder for people to lose weight?  I think you need to step back and make friends with an overweight/obese person and get to know them before you start bashing!

  • shortayy@xanga

This sounds like a mad anorexic girl is fighting off her demons.

Both cases are equally bad. But do say that anorexic ppl have the WILLPOWER to lose weight is so sad that obviously someone is in denial that they have a disorder and/or is severely misunderstanding what being anorexic is.

  • Butterpecan_ts@xanga

I'm not for bashing either one, fat or anorexia. There are serious problems with both. It goes beyond conrtol or lack thereof. So, I'm not for encouraging either one. I do not feel it is healthy to attack someone (or a group of people) that you do that agree with. Whether that person is anorexic or if that person bashes anorexics, I think it shows some type of mental unbalance on your part if you attack that person. If you don't like what's being said, either ignore it or address it intelligently. People will respect you more, if you show respect.
