  • Why Are People So Negative About Healthy Living?

This is in response to the post I wrote the other day about my discovery of everyday foods that can kill.  I was alarmed with how many comments included the sentence "well, we're all going to die anyway.”  It was a quick "did you know?" post, bordering on the entertainment side.

It was to inform Healthkicker readers of the foods that carry the most toxins and ingredients that are harmful.  I don't think anyone should stop boiling ramen or grilling your steak.

However, I still can't believe how many used "we're all going to die, anyway.”  If we thought that way for everything, there would be no point to living.  Why exercise, eat right, be happy, take part in activities - we're all going to die anyway right?  Just sit in your house and watch TV all day then.

The idea is to make the most out of the life we are living until it ends.  I know I'm going to go die at some point, but I'd like to live as healthy as possible until that point comes.

Why are people always saying "we're going to die anyway" instead of living a happy and healthy life?  Are you trying to live happy and healthy life or are you content with the way you are?

It's true that we're all going to die someday, but to use that as an excuse to treat your body like crap...  Well, I don't really understand that.  It's about the quality of the life we lead before we eventually die... not what eventually kills us when we're 90.

I could die tomorrow, and it wouldn't matter if I'd eaten nothing but carcinogenic grilled steaks for a decade.  But if I live another few decades, I'd rather live them in good health (rather than riddled with painful cancers in a hospital somewhere).

I really don't think that people believe what they're saying when they say stuff like "we're all going to die someday" or "everything will kill you, so it doesn't matter what you eat".  I suspect it's just an excuse because they don't want to change their bad habits.

  • thinlovejuicy_xo@xanga

    cause it's true!

why beat yourself up about not fitting society's mold? or looking your "best" all the time? why should you kill yourself with strict diet or exercise if you really don't want to?

if you're happy sitting on the couch, eating new york style cheesecake or dunking your double stuffed oreos into a big glass of 2% milk, go for it!

cause really, we're gonna die anyways.

if we all stuck to diets and ate what was "good for us," imagine how bored you'd be. live a little!

'cause let's face it: once we're gone, it's not gonna matter how "skinny" or "fat" we were to the generation of people after us. so why not just enjoy yourself?

  • laytexduckie@xanga

People use that excuse because they are lazy and won't really accept responsibility for themselves (for the most part). Sure, there are people who are content with how their current lifestyle is going, and maybe they enjoy eating all the ramen, burgers, fried chicken, or whatever else can kill us. But, mainly, like LadyLibellule said, people only say it because they don't want to change their bad habits.

  • listen_to_The_Pixies@xanga

Because people like to think they're being cleverly cynical and apathy is cool...or something.

  • TheUniversalOne@xanga

Yea we're all gonna die... but would rather die an unhealthy 20 year old or a healthy 90 year old? Enjoy life... if a food you love is bad for you, don't eliminate it, just eat less of it. The body is a powerful thing and can help you get rid of all the wastes you feed your body, just make sure to balance it with good stuff.

  • Wait_by_Moonlight@xanga

Because maybe they *like* eating whatever.  It makes them *happy.*
Why live forever if you aren't happy about it?
There's just a certain satisfaction you can get eating a steak that I personally don't get when eating celery.  It's a choice I make.  There is the balance between what makes me happy and not gargantuan.

All I'm saying?  That over, uber healthiness doesn't make *everyone* happy.  So they have a right to be happy by eating that quart of ice cream after breaking up with *insert name here* as much as you have the right to bring your carrot sticks to commiserate.
    Chill out, everyone.

  • Miss_Suejung@xanga

Personally, I don't know why it's anyone else's business to care about someone else's lifestyle so much. Because, we are going to die anyway.

  • Nicola_Six@xanga

I knew someone who thought that way - "why take care of myself? I'll just live life to the fullest and die young." Then that person, from years of drinking, smoking, and doing other drugs, suffered a massive heart attack and other assorted fun diseases. Nowt that person is going to die suffering. And sure, yeah, this person likes eating fat food and drinking. But she ain't happy about his health now - she's in constant pain.

So yeah, I don't get it when people say "who cares?" Those people must not have many or any health problems that bug them - yet. But they will. And when they do, they might just feel otherwise...

  • pillowpixies@xanga

I know that at least when I say "We're all going to die anyway", I'm not saying it as an excuse. In fact, I'm saying it as quite the opposite. Such as, "We're all going to die anyway, so why be strict on ourselves instead of having a little fun?" or anything else. With that sentence in mind, it's much easier to be laid back and take risks.

If a person is more happy eating unhealthy than they are eating a veggie-burger, so be it. If they don't want to exercise, so what? That statement is typically a saying that shows "We're all going to die, so i'm not going to avoid having fun to try and live longer!"

  • PlainXJane@xanga

I think it's more that said entry seemed like it was suggesting that we not eat grilled foods, etc.--when obviously, it's going to be a better choice than many other options today.  I know that isn't how you meant to it, though, and that is why I don't think I commented on it.
If I have the option of eating grilled chicken with a salad, or KFC, then I'm not going to say "Oh!  Grilled foods!  IT HAS CARCINOGENS!!!1111!!11eleventy!11  TO KFC!!!!".

  • kmiahali

life is meant to live. if "we're going to die anyway, what is the pint of living, right? why doesn't everyone just sit at home and do nothing.

  • tweeesa@xanga

I, too, did not understand why so many comments were "who cares, we're going to die anyway".  It gives me the impression that people today are lazy and careless.

Like you stated, it was a "did you know" type of post.  I thought it was interesting, and good to know.  Knowing this information isn't going to make me stop eating it completely, I'll just think twice before I eat it and cut down on portions or how often I eat it.

Similar to what was already said, if we're all going to die anyway, why don't we just sit around in front of the TV and eat french fries all day?  You'll only turn into a blob and whine about how fat you are, then you'll suffer a heart attack and die at 30 years old, and you will no longer be able to live your precious life.

  • shes_lump@xanga

i think moderation is key. like i say in the last post.

I actually said "we're all gonna die anyways" (or something along those lines), in your last post. To clarify myself, I mean that in the utmost positive manner possible.

Meaning, since we're all gonna die eventually, then I might as well enjoy everything I eat whether they be good or bad. Of course, I have a guilty conscience when I consume unhealthy food, but I write that off by putting in more time exercising.

As my mom said, it doesn't hurt to try things once. My dad second that even when it came to cigarettes, but nothing more.

  • kiwi_greenie@xanga

because some ppl r too lazy to be happy. sitting in front of the tv requires no effort, but making oneself happy and healthy requires making the right choices.

  • nowayout001@xanga

"Just sit in your house and watch TV all day then."

What's the fun of this then? Those people must have used this truth in a crappy way. Think about it, if we are all going to die at some point, let's just be ourselves and be true to ourselves. I care about my health because I don't want to live a life that is worse than healthy people. Healthy people can move around, talk fluently, think consciously, do anything an average human can do according to their will. This is what I want to maintain, until I die. That's all.

  • nowayout001@xanga

@redchill@xanga - Do you think that increased amount of exercise will seriously offset that lol???

  • nowayout001@xanga

@kmiahali - Because that is boring... Many people feel the basic need to stay on their feet... That includes me. But I believe that all life forms are going to die at some point. Health is just an aspect to maintain to keep myself from being unable to do what others can do. Hope you know what I mean.

  • sadaboy

@LadyLibellule@xanga - I agree totally with how you LL are viewing this world and our life.Hypothetically those whiz kids in the WTC could have said thatThey died fighting and resistingthe holocause flames....Believe me dear even that hog rat Osama doesnt believe in this shit. This is a ploy really.Love to be friends with U. sadaboy india.(http://www.healthkicker.com/sadaboy)

  • nowayout001@xanga

@thinlovejuicy_xo@xanga - Um... But then how we are going to die is also a major thing. Dying because of age is actually as bad as dying because of severe illnesses when you consider all those organ failures that comes with aging... But then, living healthily will give you a better range of selections of the way you wish to die. If you suffer from serious cancer or other severe illnesses, you won't have much choice, do you?

  • nowayout001@xanga

@Miss_Suejung@xanga - Because it is human nature to stick our noses to other people's businesses lol~

  • nowayout001@xanga

@TheUniversalOne@xanga - It depends on how happy you really are when you get to 90 years old... Of course, being healthy may make you feel happy. But then how is a healthy 90 years old person going to die? When eventually, all the organs begin to fail one by one, it is a slow and tormenting process. Aging is actually not the best way of dying, so sometimes, it is better to be clubbed senseless and die that way... Just a little thought though... I am not sure how I will choose to die, possibly die to save someone else's life, but then if I do not live healthily, I will not have a choice. If I become too old, my choices will become increasingly limited.

  • direwolf005@xanga

"We're all going to die anyway" so how about instead of sitting around on the couch and eating potato chips, we all go out and enjoy the life we're going to live anyway? Take advantage of it by seeing the world and having experiences you can only have here on earth while you still can. Nobody will sit around when they're 90 years old and recall the time they watched "Family Guy" when they were 20. They talk about the exciting adventures they had. By not eating healthy and moping around without any excercise, you're going to take up more of the time you could have been having fun by being sick and bedridden.

  • Earthboundgrowth

    *shrugs* Because it is true.
Not all people who say that mean that they treat their bodies horrible, some of them just mean that they'll eat what they want and that'll be that.

Others do really mean that they don't see any sense in trying hard to eat right, exercise, etc when they could die tomorrow.

I agree that we're all gonna die, and I WILL eat what I want to...but I believe in truly living life. Most pre-prepared food, stuff that's bad for me, I have a genuine distaste for.
It's almost as if I can TASTE what it's doing to my body...and therefore, I don't enjoy it (this was true even before I looked into WHY it was bad for me). I was raised with a love for healthy food, and culturally, I believe that the only good meal is something you made yourself out of stuff that real work went into.

That doesn't mean I won't eat my greasy popcorn when I'm in the mood for it, or won't fry up my own potatos when I want to...because I can gaurentee myself it's ten times better for me than any of the crap I could go out and buy, even if it isn't truly that good for me anyways.

The key to life is to truly LIVE it, and worrying about the consequences of every little thing is not a way to living at all.

THAT said, carelessly milling about and not really ever putting alot of thought into anythng (how active you are, what you eat, how your life is, who you live with, what you expect your future to be...all fine questions indeed) -- is NOT a way to really living either. And alot of people, I think, today...don't know what living really is...since what they're REALLY doing is just going about existing. Not living, at all.
