  • A Healthy Alternative to Water? - Healthkicker QOTD

    Question Of The Day:
This was submitted by a Healthkicker reader

This is going to sound strange, but does anyone know a healthy alternative to water? Obviously, water is the health beverage of choice, but sometimes, you just need a little more punch in your drink.

I started drinking Honest Tea, which is like Gatorade with fun flavors (and I'm guessing) no electrolytes. Both their Orange Mango and Pomegranate Blue concoctions are amazing.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? What about Vitamin Water? What's your favorite flavor?

Not sure if this is your cup o' tea but I am quite partial to Naked Juice.

I would say that basically anything that isn't just watered down high fructose corn syrup is probably a healthy choice.

As long as you work it into your daily needs, there are many things that have benefits.  But you need to be careful.  It is easy to drink a lot of extra calories with teas and juices.  It is also easy to get a lot of unneccessary sodium in things like gatorade.  And I just cant imagine all of the artificial sweeteners of diet drinks can be good for you!

So as long as you account for the calories and any extra sugars or sodium you might be getting, there are lots of things that are good for you!

I like herbal teas: mint, eucalyptus and chamomile.  I also will add some honey and lemon to my water too.

I've been on a big Crystal Light water bottle packet kick lately.  Not really a "healthy alternative" per se, but I get tired of just plain water all the time, and those certainly help!

you need to watch out for anything that has things in the ingredients like colors, preservatives, "natural flavors" or anything you cannot pronounce. I'm pretty sure even vitamin water has all or most of these things. If the drink you are interested in is truly natural, it will list all the ingredients for you to see and they will not give you the run around and call it something else. Calling things "natural" is a loop hole most companies have found, but the actual content is still chemicals that can be harmful.

Absolutely avoid artificial sweeteners, but avoid regular sugar (organic sugar is alright in moderation), corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup, or any other ingredient ending in "ose" (dextrose, sucrose, etc)...I found a brand of tea I would recommend, it is called TrueBrew, but it is somewhat expensive.

Personally I love water, so this isn't an issue for me! :)

I love Aquafina Water with Raspberry Flavouring - only 10 calories per 591 ml bottle!! Deliciously refreshing

unsweetened tea, or tea with honey

You should make an effort to drink just plain boring water. A good alternative that I found to spice it up a wee bit are the Dasani flavored waters. They have a good amount of vitamins, but without sugar and all the other nasty things that vitamin water has. The only downside is that the stuff DOES have some splenda in it, but its still good in moderation. I add a 20 ounce bottle to my 80 ounce jug of water to get flavor, without drinking 4 of those dasani bottles.

    I like Dasani flavored waters.
    And Naked Juice.

i loooove V8 fusion. I'm assuming that's good for me. haha

I hate juices/drinks with high fructose corn syrup, they taste disgusting.

  • polishswede@xanga

That vitamin water is full of calories. I stay away from calorie laden water.

  • Femme003@xanga

I drink Gatorade sometimes.  Other times, I just put lemon in my water. :)

  • miss_prettyinpink@xanga

Vitamin Water is just sugar! If you really cannot stand the taste of water, just pour a little bit of juice into a cup of water.

  • emilyd_foster@xanga

I love the Acai smoothies and juices.  I don't remember the name brand but they're with the Naked Juice and things like that in a purple bottle.  They're really good and not sweetened and they have healthy fats in them.

  • Venicestar@xanga

Unsweetened iced or hot tea. My favorite drink and full of antioxidants. Anything that has sweetness to it has calories (unless it's artificially sweetened). True juice  his healthier than flavored water but it's still all calories.

  • LadyLibellule@xanga

I don't mind just plain water.  I also drink herbal tea.

For stuff on the go, I like Metromint water.  It's distilled (so not the best), but the mint makes it really tasty.

  • NanaLana@xanga

Power Ade makes a calorie free drink called Zero. It's still sweet but it satiates that body thirst really well.

  • xAnaxBleedsxForxMex@xanga

I love aquafina PLUS because there are no calories, it's flavored and has some vitamins and fiber in it :) only a little, but since when can you get fiber from water? ...it's beautiful.

  • x_StrongerThanThis_x@xanga

Naked juice is great. So are green and black teas, if they don't have nasty fake sweeteners or additives. Try just a splash of milk and honey in your tea, hot or iced. It's addictive :)

  • Earthboundgrowth

Juice that actually has nothing else in it than juice is great.
There's a ton of brands...big names, small names...stuff you haven't heard of. Big Lots might have a whole bunch of 'em for cheap, if you're looking for a bargain.

You could try making your own iced tea...you know, boiling yourself a pitcher, putting it in the fridge...pouring yourself some and adding ice. *shrugs* It's basically water with herbs in it, but you were mentioning different kinds of water in your post...so meh.

Smoothies are great too as long as they only have fruit in them.

  • BeingMorePositive@xanga

I like lemon tea- just tea pure without any cream, mik or sweetners.

  • kmiahali

crystal light is the best thing out there i know of if you want to flavor your water.

  • LadyLibellule@xanga

@kmiahali - I certainly wouldn't call artificial flavours, colours, and neurotoxins "the best thing out there".

  • ELIZerson@xanga

    - Fresh juices
    - Make an effort to drink a LOT of water after some sort of exercise.  To me, at least, water tastes fantastic right after I work out so I try to drink as much as I can right then while it tastes good.
    - Propel water is good.
