  • Is Sleeping Too Much Healthy?

I recently read a Yahoo article about too much sleep being just as bad as too little sleep.  At first I thought the thought was kind of irrelevant -- who the heck has enough time to oversleep?  The article goes on to explain that sleeping a lot longer on weekends than weekdays counts as oversleeping, as does taking two hour naps.

I do both.  I have work early on Sunday, and afterward I always sleep in late.  Though I set my alarm for a 45-minute nap (I think this is the ideal time for a full sleep cycle), hitting the snooze button takes care of things, and I end up sleeping a lot longer.  I do wake up a little groggy, but what's a non-morning person to do?

One sign of depression is consistently feeling tired and being sleepy (for a long period of time).  I don't have depression, but I remembered a hilarious response a fellow Xangan had to a post about feeling lonely: "Take some Nyquil, read some Leviticus, and you'll feel better in the morning.”  Sometimes, you do just want the day to end.

All my friends don't get enough sleep.  We go through the day like zombies.  Who could blame us for trying to catch up on weekends?

So, does anyone get the right amount of sleep?  Do you oversleep on weekends or take naps?  How do you get through the day?

I work afternoons and nights, I NEVER get enough sleep.  So when I can sleep, I cram it in.

I get like...between seven and eight hours of sleep on weekdays, and between ten and twelve on Friday and Saturday. I try to compensate. Stupid school starting at seven...

TOO MUCH sleeep is so...over rated JK

I sometimes oversleep on the weekends and take naps, but I would rather do that than not get enough sleep at all and be sleep deprived.

  • AttackOfTheSurveys@xanga

Easy. Sleep during my lectures XD

  • Lil_Firefly_25@xanga

I never get enough sleep. I do take naps when I get home from school for about 3-4 hours and on weekends sometimes I sleep in, and sometimes I don't. Depends.

i never really get enough sleep during work days since i have to wake up quite early in the morning (5am) and i don't fall alseep until 11 or after. i take the public transportation so i am able to take short naps on my way to work/home. but on the weekend i sleep in for sure!!!

i'm a morning person so I get like 8 hours a sleep and I LOVE it.

  • keyboarderrr@xanga

I'm usually asleep for over half a day. I'm always tired.

i never noticed that i oversleep a lot more on the weekends. i just woke up and went on with my daily activities.

I've heard that our ancestors got about 10 hours of sleep a night, and that's what we really need for our bodies to properly rest and repair themselves.  So if that's what we should be getting, then most of the population is sleep-deprived.

I don't think that too much sleep is itself a bad thing, but it may be a sign of some other serious problem that needs to be checked out.  If you're competing with your cat for the sleep trophy, you might need to see a doctor.

Well since I get up at 5:00 every weekday for school and don't go to bed until at LEAST 10:00 (usually 11-12), I sleep in as late as possible on weekends. I know that's absolutely terrible for my health, but quite honestly, I don't care. =]

I definitely need a TON of sleep. I've tried getting 8 hours every night for a couple of weeks. It made me want to die, and I promptly fell asleep dead in the middle of class.

I usually get 10 or 11 most nights. And when I can't get that, I make it up the next day.

it probably differs by the person, just like everything else. fuck what every piece of advice says, i need to sleep in on the weekends to recover from college-class-related insomnia, and it works just fine for me.

  • PervyPenguin@xanga

6-8 hours on weekdays. 12-18 hours on weekends. Hell yes.

Who cares? Over-sleeping is AWESOME. I could sleep through a WHOLE DAY if I didn't have to pee D:

i sleep whenever i can, and sometimes, where ever i can heehee.  don't care if its considered over sleeeping.  a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do, jooo know!

Thursdays and Saturdays are my "going out nights". No sleep, until I get home the next day. Then I sleep all day, wake up in the afternoon and go to work.

I have no real routine though, as I'm a casual employee. I work when someone decides they think I should.

Sleeping is usually done during the two hour wait for a train on a Sunday morning at Flinders Street Station.

But, when I've got nothing on, I don't think there's any harm in sleeping in, or point in getting up early.

i LOVE sleep. and i think i oversleep. when there is nothing immediately calling my attention, i take naps. it's probably terrible. but whatever. plus, when it's cold it's just so nice to be warm in my covers!!!

  • emilyd_foster@xanga

I usually sleep for about 9 or 10 hours on the weekdays and less on the weekends if I'm going out. But if I get less sleep over the weekend, I usually make up for it during the week.

  • quiet_strength@revelife

i just posted about this. i consistently sleep about 9 hours every night. that may sound like too much, but i notice a lot of negative side effects when i sleep very much less than this.

i don't know if the article you read was true. i have read more things that insinuate lost sleep is lost until you get it back and if you lose 2 hours of sleep last week, you probably won't feel totally rejuvenated until you get those 2 hours back. i don't really know if that is true, either. i think everyone's body is unique, there is not an absolute rule for anyone on this.

however, a sleep cycle is about 90 minutes. If you nap more than that you probably will feel groggy and it will interrupt your sleep later. It is better for the most part to take power naps if you are really tired during the day - relax for a bit just enough to fall asleep and then jolt yourself awake. This has saved me on occasion, but again, it doesn't work for everyone.

I know they all come out with these articles all the time, too little sleep too much sleep.....we're all going to die!

Basically, here's my opinion. You're tired? Sleep. You have to stay up? Sleep later. Your own body will tell you if you need to get some Zzz's or not. Listen to yourself, not some quack at Yahoo.

  • my_final_username@xanga

8-10 hours per night.    I try to get up the same time each day and go to bed the time each night.

  • crh08

I do oversleep a lot. If I can sleep 1am-2pm I'm going to do it. I'll take naps before I go to work. I tried the 8-10 sleep thing per night but I always feel the same way so I just went back to oversleeping.

  • kiwi_greenie@xanga

i can sometimes sleep the whole day. my friends say i'm depressed, but i'm a rly bubbly person :S
