  • Condoms Are The Most Embarrassing Item to Buy?

This is a guest blog submitted by AlterEgo909

My apologies for the chart being slightly blurry, it didn't translate from Microsoft word as well as I had hoped.

The winner of the Most Embarrassing Purchases “study” is condoms! I was pretty sure going into this that either condoms or feminine products would be the “winner.”

So what does this say about the Xanga population? (please allow me to generalize the 85 respondents to the general population for the purpose of my summary, although I know this isn’t anywhere near a scholarly study)

We are mostly embarrassed by condoms. Why is that? Everyone seems so open on SnippiesBlog and on their blogs about sex but we are embarrassed to buy condoms, an item that is essential to SAFE sex?

Perhaps this embarrassment could be part of the culprit that spreads STD’s and causes pregnancies? If we are going to be open about sex, we have to be open about condoms, don't you think?

We are secondly embarrassed by a woman’s menstrual cycle. I will admit, I didn’t purchase feminine products for myself until I came to college and I HAD to, before that I made my grandmother buy them for me (lol).

Women will spend the majority of their lives needing to purchase and use feminine products, always have, and always will, but it is still something that embarrasses us?  Both women and men get uncomfortable about “that time of the month” and mother nature’s “gift” is so taboo, but why? We would rather purchase sex toys than purchase pads? My answer? It is such a private and personal time/experience, we don’t want it referenced in any capacity, especially in line at the checkout counter.  Anyone else have an answer?

In third place was bras/underwear. Although I am not personally embarrassed to purchase these, I understand why some people are. Underwear is private thing that you put on your body and some check out boy/girl is fingering them all willy nilly to find the bar code. It's pretty legitimate to not want you "unmentionables" being tossed around a counter.

In fourth place, and what surprised me the most, was Junk Food. People referenced feeling embarrassed because they were overweight and felt like they were being judged. This sucks! I can't imagine the feeling of being judged by what I purchased to eat. Judgment in general sucks. This is the only result that made me slightly sad/upset.

Well there ya have, now you know what embarrasses Xangans.

Are you surprised that condoms are the most embarrassing items to purchase? Junk food also made the list, does that make sense to you? Are you embarrassed to buy junk food?

lol junk food!!!! i'm not embarrass purchasing any of those stuff..haha especially the first one coz i think its a more awkward situation for the cahsier haha...

  • pillowpixies@xanga

I can't wrap my mind around why it's so embarrassing to buy that stuff, including the condoms. I mean really...

  • brittanymullins@xanga

Who the heck gets embarrassed to buy things?  If its that bad, use the self check out. lol

  • brittanymullins@xanga
  • imsum1special2@xanga

Yeah, it's embarrassing.  I don't know why, it just is.  I always make sure I use self-checkout and remain discreet. Up until 2 years ago, my mom still sent me feminine products in care packages (I'm 24).

As far as junk food goes, I try not to purchase it if I'm around certain friends that are either bigger than I am, trying to lose weight, or both.  Not because of their size, but they make fun of me and make me feel bad for eating it.  They'll either say, "yeah, you need to fatten up!" or "you're just so skinny that you can just eat anything!"  Thanks for making me feel terrible.

haha!! i've always been embarrassed to buy condoms. thats just how i am. and also because i don't want the cashier to see it....like, i dont care if they're the kinda people that judge premarital sex or whatnot, i just dont want them knowing that i'm about to do the damn thing. so i get the guy to buy them =P

as for feminine products/bras and undies---those dont bother me at all. just because everyone knows women have periods so buying those things shouldnt be such a shocker, and when i shop for bras/undies its usually at victoria's secret where all the workers are women lol

  • StrawberryShy@xanga

    WHAT condoms? No way...

    Seriously.. condoms wins over pads/tampons?

  • LadyLibellule@xanga

The junk food surprised me.  Condoms and tampons I understand.  But junk food?  How do people know you're not just having a party when you buy a few bags of chips?

  • L_is_for_lizard@xanga

no way. condoms are not embarrassing to buy. neither are "feminine products"

of the list, I would say that a pregnancy test is most awkward...especially if you are clearly a young, single woman.

  • CrazyMai07@xanga

    Really? That's weird

Buying condoms make me feel awesome, like "yeaaaah, I'm getting some".

  • danni09@xanga

    i bought a pack yesterday...

  • CrazyMai07@xanga

@L_is_for_lizard@xanga - Most awkward combination potentially ever bought in a drug store -- pregnancy test and a coat hanger.

  • youngvan@xanga

Interesting survey. I agree with the majority.

"Underwear is private thing that you put on your body and some check out
boy/girl is fingering them all willy nilly to find the bar code." Haha.

  • phuck_diz_shiz@xanga

lol why would anyone be embarrassed of buying junk food -- GUILTY maybe -- but Embarrassed? not for me

  • KaidaSani@xanga

That's really interesting, but I can't say I'm too surprised. I mostly think it's kind of sad. I can understand buying condoms for like the first time, yeah, that's a little hard. But the embarassment factor should wear off eventually.

I used to be really embarassed about buying pads, but that has dissipated also.

I would say the most embarassing thing to buy would be something like Vagisil or hemoroid cream... or an enema... or stuff like that, you know?

  • MakinzyKrysteen@xanga

Condoms don't embarrass me, but I'm not surprised.

I think laxatives or hemorrhoid cream would be much worse...

  • Beautiful_Disaster_74@xanga

Personally, I don't find any of this stuff embarrassing to buy.  Hell, I work in a grocery store right now, and I buy all of my embarrassing stuff there.  Granted, I don't like, wave the package around and shout about it when I'm buying super-absorbency, winged, extra-long-with-coverage-from-the-navel-to-the-top-of-the-ass-crack overnight maxi pads.  I also don't start cracking jokes and being obvious when I'm buying condoms.  I just gather my stuff, buy it, and go home.  No big whoop.

If I was going to avoid buying any of these "embarrasing items" at work, it would probably be the pregnancy test.  Not because I'd be embarrassed that my co-workers might actually know I'm sexually active, though (I'm in my 30s and live with my boyfriend...I think they've already guessed).  I'd just buy it somewhere else because I'm afraid the co-workers I'm closer to would be all on pins and needles and acting all goofy, hoping I'm expecting (a mild stomach bug I had a few months ago that coincided with PMS had that effect, LOL), and management would be looking to find a reason to usher me out the door.  No thanks!

  • yoshistar@xanga

That's weird. I'd think that pregnancy tests or Monistat would be the most embarassing. Just cuz depending on how young you look, you might feel like people are judging you for maybe being pregnant and all that entails. If you're a younger girl, people might be thinking you mean things, whereas if you're middle aged or even in your 20s, people might be thinking, Good for her, she might be having a baby. Hah. Monistat lets the world know that you are having some uncomfortable itching, possibly right then and there lol. Awkwarddd.

I don't think condoms are that bad. Neither is underwear. I mean it's a little weird, but definitely not embarrassing. Not for me. Or junk food, either. Unless you're seriously buying a cart load of snacks. Even then, the people and cashier will probably assume you're having a party or something. I would, hah.

  • raspberryjade@xanga

that's bullshit. I would be much more embarassed buying a douche, laxatives and a dildo over a bra.

    people are lame.

  • forsaken_ficus@xanga

thats what self checkout iles are for, lol

  • PixelDOT@xanga

I'm actually perfectly fine buying tampons. I mean, people know it happens, its no big secret. And I'm usually ok buying condoms, because it says "yes I'm having sex but I'm using protection and being responsible"

The most embarrassing item for me has to be pregnancy tests. I've bought quite a few and really needed none of them... but I utilize them anyway to calm my nerves when my period is even a day late. But man, I hate the shame of being a baby-faced 20  year old (I look like I'm 15 or so) walking up to the counter with the dreaded test. I just feel like the cashier is thinking "The poor irresponsible girl is going to be a teenage mother."

  • gracehopper6@xanga

i would have thought women's products would be more embarrassing than condoms, but i guess. you know you should totally do a health blog about THE DIVA CUP. which is awesome. you order it online (alternative menstral product) and you only need one. no more going to the store for tampons and pads. i have a diva cup and i LOVE MINE.

  • quiet_observations@xanga

I was pretty surprised that condoms were the number one most embarrassing items to buy. I can understand someone pretty young (say. . .me and my cousin when we were 12) going to the store and pretending to buy condoms, but c'mon, I wouldn't be embarrassed to buy them now. I thought it would be something to be proud of, sort of like saying "Yes, I am sexually active and safe about it." I'm sad that this isn't the case.

  • quiet_observations@xanga

@CrazyMai07@xanga - Oh god that does sound awkward, and scary!

  • quiet_observations@xanga

    @Beautiful_Disaster_74@xanga - "Granted, I don't like, wave the package
around and shout about it when I'm buying super-absorbency, winged,
    extra-long-with-coverage-from-the-navel-to-the-top-of-the-ass-crack
overnight maxi pads." Hahaha that made me laugh so hard
