Ever since I've gone vegan, I've noticed I have a lot more energy. It's also led to my eliminating fast food (for the most part) and things like high fructose corn syrup; I've cut back a lot on sugar. So, for me, veganism works the best. I've stopped eating vegan a couple of times, and I found that it was sort of a gateway to eating crap (at least for me).

Plus, vegetarians and vegans tend to have fewer cases of things like high cholesterol.

On the other hand, veganism can be kind of hard to adjust to. It took me three tries to get it right. :)

I am somewhere between a vegetarian and a light meat-eater....but I usually end up eating more like a vegetarian. I have become really picky about the meat and dairy I eat, so I usually end up passing. I do like them, I have nothing against it if the animals are raised and fed properly (which isn't really that often)...I also eat eggs.

The only problem I have encountered so far is making sure I get enough calcium. Everything else seems to take care of itself.

I wish I could be a vegan because it has a lot of health benefits but I don't think I could commit myself to something like that. You have to make sure you get all the correct vitamins and such. At the moment, I'm just a vegetarian.

@chicktaylor@xanga - Don't get me wrong, I respect your decision to go vegan, I just want to add that if people ate the way they were supposed to, i.e. unrefined, unprocessed, healthy fats, etc, things like high cholesterol would practically not exist.

I, too, recently cut out a lot of things like high fructose corn syrup, refined sugars and refined salts, refined flour...I feel enormously better for it, too! So much, that I don't even crave those things anymore. I love REAL food.

All I will say is that after reading "The China Study" by Collin Campbell, I will never touch animal products again.

  • TornadoChaser@momaroo

I'm semi- vegan. I just can't seem to give up cheese.

Vegetarianism and especially veganism is a very hard life style in America. Because omnivores are the majority all food is of course focused on them. We have to bug restaurant staff to find out what exactly goes into the meal to see if there's hidden animal products. It's especially hard on road trips when fast food is pretty much the only option. It takes dedication to not throw your hands up and say forget it. That is a huge con for me.

The pros - It's healthier, I have more energy, I feel better. Plus I can rest easy that I am not taking part in the horrid treatment of "food" animals.

What is best? I don't know. I know what is best for me. I think that's for everyone to determine for themselves.

I eat anything that's natural and tastes good.

I wouldn't eat something that tastes really bad no matter how much health benefit it's supposed to provide.

  • kazzya@xanga

    VEGAN and 100% ORGANIC.

-better skin-wayyyy more energy-more variety in food! i've been introduced to more ethnicities and their cuisine, like moroccan, indian, etc make sure you ask them to make your food without GHEE. which is their butter--yuck-did i mention clearer skin?-your hair might thin out at first but that's a sign of iron deficiency, and lack of b12 in your diet, so you need fortified everything with those nutrients in it.-weight loss-animals. COME ON. number one reason.
  • tweeesa@xanga

    Vegetarian.

    - ethical treatment of animals
    - health reasons
    - better for the environment

I want to become a vegetarian...eventually.  I think a diet high in fruits, veggies with a few options including email is best.

  • dropdeadradical@xanga

I've been vegan for almost a year now and it is one the best things I think I could have ever done for myself.  I have more energy, my skin is clear, and I'm a happier person knowing that I'm doing something good for the world and its animals :)  It was hard at first, sort of like a diet for the first month 'cause I had to keep reminding myself to check ingredients, but it has totally been worth it.

    Vegetarian

In my opinion, it doesn't matter what you are as long as you eat healthfully.

  • GoodbyeFatHelloLife@xanga

As long as you eat healthy foods, you are being healthy.  One is not necessarily healthier than another.

  • ReadySetTouchh@xanga

To each their own, I say.

I eat meat, I occasionally eat junk food, and I don't drive a hybrid.

  • x_anabell_x@xanga

only meat i eat is chicken and occasionally some turkey or salmon. other than that veggies, whole grains, and some cheese and or milk. don't really do eggs.

  • myohmy03@xanga

    I'm a very happy vegan!
Like the others said, i've never felt better or fitter in my life.
And i too feel great that no animals are involved with anything i eat

It might not be for everyone but i really love love love it ( :

  • TakingxOverxMe@xanga

    I used to be vegetarian.
One day, I decided to eat a burger and I wasn't anymore.

  • ToxicWishes@xanga

Meat all the way. I love my protein in the form of a good steak!

  • LadyLibellule@xanga

I'm a vegan.  I wish more people were, or that they were at least vegetarians.  It would benefit their health, the health-care system, the animals, and the environment.  People get really, really defensive when you bring up eating meat, though.  Maybe on a sub-conscious level they feel guilty for what they're doing.

Ever heard of the so-called "Blue Zones"?  Those are places on the planet where there are pockets of people who live very long, active, healthy lives.  One common thread running through them is a mainly plant-based diet (some of them do eat cheese, eggs, and some fish, but in small amounts... no massive steaks and a full plate of meat for every meal).

  • notreally_butokay@xanga

    I'm vegetarian:

-less fat and cholesterol because I don't eat meat
    -clean conscience
-I still get all my necessary proteins, vitamins, nutrients, etc. because I'm not restricting myself too much
    -cheaper

    YAY!

  • poltron78@xanga

I'm really happy being a vegetarian. I have more energy and I feel healthier than I did when I ate meat, and it's actually not a super difficult change to make.

I did, however, try veganism for about two months, but found it really difficult to find things I could actually eat, especially in social settings.

I definitely recommend vegetarianism, and maybe vegan if you're up for more of a challenge.

  • gypsybird@xanga

i am a vegetarian. i do not eat eggs, and i rarely eat dairy, but i do sometimes. somewhere between a vegan and a vegetarian i suppose. i've been a vegetarian my entire life and my mother had been a vegetarian years before i was born, so i've never had meat in my system; i can't tell the difference.
