This is a guest blog submitted by Sleepyhead I hate hospitals, I’ll do anything to get out of there faster. So I want a plant instead of flowers next time someone comes to visit me in the hospital. Why plants you ask?
According to a
Men’s Health magazine, plants helped patients in the
Kansas State University hospital use 36% less painkillers and significantly increased their recovery time.
Isn’t that great? I wish I knew this when I had knee surgery. Knee surgery is painful, and the recovery time is long. This information could have helped then. I wouldn’t have had to pop so many pills to relieve the pain.
I don't even know why people bring flowers for patients. They're useless. The last time someone got me flowers while I was hospital, I looked at them once and just tossed them on the desk next to me.
Do you think the study has some truth to it? Knowing this information, would you still want flowers if you were recovering in a hospital?

I like plants and flowers both...I don't really have too much of a preference, except that plants live longer. So I'd probably want a plant anyways; this is just icing on the cake, so to speak
I would like a plant. Simply because if you care for it properly, it will keep on growing and living. Whereas, with flowers, they are pretty, but they slowly die... and that is kind of depressing, especially if I am in the hospital watching them die. :) Unless you get me a potted flower plant, then you get the best of both.
I know... get a potted flowering plant!! :)
I would like a plant - it would give me something to do and take care of. and I suppose the green can be relaxing
Hmmm... Well, potted plants can harbour molds and stuff, so I'm not sure.
I'm also not sure if hospitals would allow you to bring a plant in. There's the risk of spillage and whatnot.
most likely. i mean, when someone goes to "reconnect with nature" don't they come back feeling great. probably the same rules apply here.
In the hospital i work at we have different programs to help patients heal better/faster
we put plants throughout the hospital and patients room
and they REALLY enjoy them
It may depend on the kind of plant and other factors that weren't mentioned in the study. I suppose it couldn't hurt though unless you don't take your meds simply because you think a plant is going to cure you or if the patient has allergies. I know I would suffer from many kinds of plants being put in my room.
watching porn or comedy will also help ease the pain.
I figured that's why people sent flowers and plants (same) to hospital patients. The make sick people feel better.
@h0peLeSs_RoMaNtiC@xanga - so true
Once the flowers dies it end up stinking up the whole place
It might have to do with the fact that plants can live a decent length of time compared to individual flowers.
...perhaps seeing something die while you're ill is bad mojo (psychological reactions do have a significant impact on our health, as exampled by the placebo affect).
