The ads keep smacking my face. “Anti-Oxidant Superpower” (with a cape on), “Guardian Angel (with wings on), “Life Guard” (sitting on the lifeguard seat). They have more but you get the idea. If you haven’t already picked up on what I’m talking about, it’s the POM juice campaign.
POM claims the antioxidants in their drinks can help an individual live a longer and healthier life. As much as I love antioxidants, I am not ready to pay upwards up three dollars for a drink filled with sugar.
I looked up POM’s pomegranate juice ingredients. An eight-ounce bottle has 140 calories with 34 grams of sugar. Yes, that’s 34 grams of sugar for every eight ounces!!
Now this goes to show as great as POM claims they’re drink offers health benefits it’s also offering unnecessary ingredients. My dad’s side of the family has a history of diabetes so it would benefit me greatly to just pick up the real thing instead of a bottled drink.
The actual pomegranate fruit can be bought at supermarkets for less than three dollars, while offering natural sugars and real juice. I understand the fruit is messier but it’s a small price to pay for better health benefits.
Why people get the bottled drink instead of the actual fruit when the fruit offers more benefits? Do you drink POM's pomegranate juice?
When you drink POM’s pomegranate juice, do you realize all the extra stuff you’re putting into your body?

I like POM juice, but I only drink it occasionally. Pomegranates, however, are one of my favorite fruits and I usually eat three or so a week. The juice is never as good for you as the actual fruit.
I think people drink juice because it's "easier". I've never had POM, and I've only ever had a few pomegranate seeds. They were tasty though.
soem people i know buy it even though they don't like it, they buiy it just because it looks cool to be drinking it. Now that's just stupid. I have never had POM before, but I'm not going to buy it just to look cool. I do like pomegranates though :)
*shrugs* I've seen POM increasingly and have regarded it with some curiousity. I don't pay three dollars or more for ANY beverage...I balk and two dollars, honestly.
But mostly it's just encouraged me to think about if I can grow pomegranites myself.
I've never tried POM, obviously. If someone bought it for me, I might. I try to google companies to check for chemicles and processed ingredients, mostly...though I also look out for GMO stuffs.
34 grams isn't as much as a ton of other beverages on the market...especially energy drinks -- NOW there is a subject, lmao. Or foods, for that matter.
Sugar itself, while an empty thing to eat, is okay in moderation or as a treat. As for those who're under the illusion that POM might prevent them from getting a cold...then yes, they're highly ignorant with all that sugar in there...undermining their immune system that day.
*shrugs*
health wuh? this stuff makes for good martini's..
good health is a balanced diet and regular excercise..
I drank it once and I love it. However, you do know that the sugar level in the POM juice is the same sugar level in the fruit itself? The sugar in the drink is the same natural sugar that you would get if you were to just eat the fruit. The body does need a good sugar level to be able to function and fruits like pomegranates offer that natural sugar. It's not the same as the process white sugar you would find in supermarkets (which isn't healthy for you anyways, but we still eat it no problem).
Other Fun Fact: The bottle isn't just shaped to mimic the actual pomegranate, but since it also proposes a healthier lifestyle and losing weight, the shape also mimics a woman's body to give you that curve feeling.
POM's too pricey for me to buy... but with all that sugar packed into such a tiny bottle, I think I'll stick with water.
Wow, I used to drink POM juice once or twice but the prices are quite high for a small bottle.
haha the actual fruit is more fun to eat too =P i don't like sugary stuff so i always prefer the fruit over some artificial drink version
@black_lie@xanga - Except when it squirts you in the eyes. =[
That stuff is sooo good, but wicked expensive.
The fact of the matter is that pretty much all of those "healthy" drinks out there really aren't. The fruit is ALWAYS better than the drink, because the fruit doesn't have all the added extras. It's 100% natural.
If you're resorting to JUST healthy drinks/foods, then you're lazy. You need to add in some exercise as well, otherwise you're never going to get the figure you want. And if you actually believe half of those drinks/foods ARE healthy for you, then you need to go back to school and learn how to read. It's called LABELS. THEY tell the truth. The stupid advertisements on the front of packages lie. Read the fine print and labels, always.
Nope, I don't drink the pomegranate juice. I've had the white tea one, I think, and it was a while ago. It's good, but I don't drink it regularly. I never trust labels that say "100% natural," or anything of the sort. As if the company could really resist adding in a couple packets of sugar per ounce. But, anyway, I know what I'm putting into my body, or at least I'm wary of it. I'll drink the stuff, but not so often that I become addicted to it.
Why people get the bottled drink instead of the actual fruit when the
fruit offers more benefits?
Because pomegranates are a little bit labour-intensive. And you can also grab a bottle of juice on the go (it's kind of hard to do that with an actual pomegranate).
Do you drink POM's pomegranate juice?
I've had it in the past, yes. It's too concentrated/sticky for my taste, though.
When you drink POM’s pomegranate juice, do you realize all the extra stuff you’re putting into your body?
I don't know what they're putting in it where you come from, but the POM juice I've had was just juice. The sugar content is high because the juice is concentrated and cooked, but it's sugar from the fruit itself... not added sugar.
What are your sources for all this "extra stuff"?
POM IS SO YUMMY
but that tiny ass bottle cost 4buck + tax OH MY
I can buy a couple litres of OJ
Orange juice is just as healthy
I like POM but yes it is somehwat overpriced. I never even knew how much sugar was in that odd little bottle.
I drink it on occasion b/c I enjoy the taste, but it's quite expensive.
there are nearly as many antioxidants in regular orange juice anyway. those ads were banned in the UK because they are misleading
I've never figured out how to pomengranates.... lol
The sugar in POM juice is natural- if you look on the label, it's 100% pom juice, no sugars added. So, the sugar you find in POM juice is the exact same sugar you would eat in an actual pom fruit, albeit a little more concentrated since you're drinking the juice. I was skeptical at first, but it was on sale the other day at Safeway so I thought I'd try it just to see if it did anything. What I've done is I divided a standard 16oz bottle over 3 days, so the sugar intake was less. I am now a believer- tons of energy...I can barely sleep! I slept only 5 hours but feel like I've slept 8! The biggest thing I noticed though is that I'm thinking clearer. Lately my head has been kinda foggy and the memory hasn't been so good, but after 3 days of this stuff I feel like myself again. It's not really that expensive if you do what I did and divide the bottle up- you don't need to drink the entire bottle in one sitting to feel the benefits. You're not supposed to drink it like regular juice anyway, that would be too much sugar. You just take it like a supplement, about 5oz. at a time. And of course eat the fruit too!
