I Don't Smoke Unless I'm Drinking
Submitted guest blog
The past few days I’ve been drinking with a few buddies and for some reason I started smoking as well.
I never smoke, I hate the smell of it, but whenever I drink I have the urge to smoke.
Right now as I type this I have a cigar in my mouth and a drink in the other hand (yes, I type super fast with one hand
).
No but seriously, I've been smoking way too much while drinking. I heard those who smoke occasionally are affected worse regular smokers.I’m curious as to why whenever I drink, I want to smoke. Does anyone know a reason why drinking leads to smoking? Do you get the urge to smoke when you’re drinking or am I just some weird odd ball?

I have random urges to do things I dont normally do when I drink. its weird indeed.
I always smoke when I drink...
I never smoke when i drink......
i do too! i have no idea why. i have this oral fixation thing going on so maybe that's part of it, but i really don't know. i have the urge right now, but I'm at my friend's and can't smoke. lol.... i just realized that it's not even just when i drink anymore. crap. anyway, if you figure it out, let me know!
I have the exact same problem. I think it's because the alcohol is an disinhibitor. So you find yourself much more prone to doing something simply because of mild peer pressure or some subconscious desire to fit in and look "cool".
But who knows, everyone is different.
yeah, disinhibitor to submissible.
smoke you want to.
Wasn't this a line at the beginning of Reign of Fire?
no, you're not a weird odd ball cuz my best friend does that too.....she doesnt understand why it happens either
My reason why this happens is because you want to sip your drink slowly and need something satisfying to fill in the gaps. Similar to why others nibble on nuts or savouries.
I did the same thing as u too...I never smoke before, hate it hate it!
the rumor that smoking occassionally is worse than smoking all the time is incorrect. while, yes, you can still damage your health by being a casual smoker, you see the effects slower than someone who smokes all the time.
cigarettes increase the buzz when you smoke, i used to be a regular smoker, now i smoke when i drink. i find that i have fewer drinks when i'm smoking. just try not to over-do it. smoking can make your hang over worse.
that's how i know i've drank far too much, when i start smoking. other than that i completely hate cigarettes.
idk about you but when i'm plastered i think i smoke because it calms me down.when you drink you tend to give into things easier. it lowers our logical reasoning of what may be right and wrong. our decisions are impaired. so that's why you smoke when you drink.
i have the urge to smoke, but i haven't gone on it yet. i didn't last night, but i used to live in france and lots of my friends smoked, so it was tough not to start. i didn't want to there, and now that im back in the US i do, lol
I haven't smoked for 5 weeks, and last night I just had the biggest urge to smoke that I had one cigarette. It made me feel wicked sick though, so I don't think I'll be continuing that.
Also, that's how I started smoking when I did smoke regularly. First just at parties, then when I was really stressed...then when I was driving too..and so on.
That's how I started smoking actually. I would only smoke when I drank, then I became only a social smoker, and now I smoke regularly. I think deep down I always wanted it,and the only time I would give in was when I was drinking. But that could be just me. I definitely get the craving worse when I'm drinking though,so you're not alone
I am a smoker. When I used to drink, I always smoked much more and felt compelled to do so. Makes me think of a night my buddy and i were drinking we only had 3 cigarettes and realized to make it through a night of drinking we would have to ration our cigarettes. I'm not sure what the connection is, but I know it's there.
I've noticed this in people who don't even smoke regularly.... So, you're def not an oddball on that one.... I'm wondering at a synaptic level is there some sort of connection.... like if smoking fulfills something drinking takes away within the brain?
social smoker.
i smoke regularly, so i wouldn't know. i started sober, though.
My friends that smoke when they drink say that they do it to increase their buzz. Other friends who smoke a lot of weed said that they started smoking cigarettes if their high wasn't good enough.
But the number one reason my friends say they started smoking in college was because they started to have a cigarette here and there while drinking, and they slowly became addicted. It then became necessary to have that cigarette to relax, de-stress, or up a buzz... drunk or not. Not only that, but it took more cigarettes (or at least at a higher frequency) to have the same effect.
Bottom line, smoking is bad for you. No matter if you do it regularly or only occasionally. So why would you risk becoming addicted? I've had the urge to smoke while drinking, but I've never had a problem refusing.
i am the exact same way! i started smoking while drinking last year, as in fall 2007, and i still have zero interest in ever smoking sober. i smoke probably one or two cigarettes when i'm drinking at most, so i think that's partly the reason why i'm not addicted now.
I dont think your some weird odd ball...many of my friends...and adult friends who drink always have the urge to smoke...maybe its just one of those things you cant explain...
i do the same thing. i don't smoke sober, although i like the smell....but when i drink, i tend to lean towards smoking at least one for ever few shots i have....then i regret it the next day. awful taste in my mouth and down my throat...but drunk, i love it.
there's a country song, i think called "she only smokes when she drinks" or something. my mom plays it sometimes.
it must be common if there's a song about it.
