  • Banana Drama: I Love It But Can't Have It

    Guest blog by The_Prestigiator

Unlike most college grads, I've yet to fully grasp the notion of being independent so yea, my mom still packs my lunch.

I don't complain because I love her sandwiches and the little cup of fresh blueberries/blackberries/strawberries/honeydew melon she always includes.

However, today, I opened up my bag and saw...A BANANA.

Now, mind you, I'm the biggest banana-phile ever but I've rarely devoured them since my senior year of high school. Why?

    1. One of my physicians advised against it in terms of how many carbs a banana has and how I have a slow metabolism.

    2. It packs on the weight.

    3. Health class nightmare episode.

Yet, I love bananas. They are bright yellow, delicious, filled with Vitamic C and Vitamin B6.  Even when they're brown they are edible! Monkeys have it good!

Most importantly, they are loaded with potassium and, ever since I stopped including bananas in my daily diet, my legs have felt a tad weaker (aka I can't run the mile like I used to).

I have no idea what to do. True, I need to lose weight, and I'm not a believer in the whole "banana diet" fad. Still, I want to eat this darn banana my mom packed. What to do, what to do...

So are bananas really that healthy if they are so fattening? If you found something tasty and nutritious yet knew there were definite repercussions to consuming said food would you still eat it? What do you think is the best thing to do?

it could be like a once in awhile treat or something...just not for every day.

  • livinforyourname213@xanga

I didn't know that bananas were bad for you. That must be why I'm fat. haha. I love them, soooooo much! bananas and clementine oranges are my favorite! (:

  • YouTOme@xanga

bananas aren't fattening! they are fruit!  i'm sure you're not going to live on a banana only diet, so you can have all the fruit and vegetables, nuts and beans you want. the fiber is good for you. i hate bananas, but i would eat them if i could stomach the scent and consistency.

lay off the processed foods, other proteins and fats and you should be fine!

  • quiet_strength@revelife

bananas do not make you fat. they really do not have much more sugar than most fruits, and less than others. perhaps there are other sweets like refined and processed sugars that need to be eliminated from your diet. the more fruits and vegetables you eat the faster your metabolism will get!

Don't worry, bananas are healthy!  They may have more calories than some fruits--a medium-sized banana has about 100.  But there's nothing wrong with 100 calories for a snack, and you probably don't have the stomach to eat more than one banana at a time, anyway!

I'm ALLERGIC to bananas. They're known around my house as the "Fruit of Death" .... I break out in hives, can't breathe, etc.

But... they're so tasty and I miss them.

  • Katherine_the_third@xanga

    they give me migraines :(
but i love bananas, especially in smoothies

Bananas are absolutely delicious. I love them!
When I'm running (which is what I should be doing ) I have at least one a day.
I can't imagine them being bad for you.
However, it seems to me that the pros outweigh the cons, one banana don't hurt ;)

  • nekkid@xanga

    hmm... one banana won't hurt.

  • Losingmyfatass@xanga

Eat them in moderation... just like everything else.  It's still better than plenty of things you could eat!!!!

i agree with the above - moderation! if you keep it out of your diet, you will feel deprived. have one as a treat when you really want one - just don't eat it all the time. however, bananas have actually helped my dad curb his appetite and help him lose weight. i guess it really depends on the person. i have bananas all the time and i'm fine.

I'm not completely sure on this, but I read somewhere that bananas help with cramps because of their high potassium. I eat one daily because my mom buys at least 16 of them a week from Costco and they're always at the table. They tend to give me more energy for running track that any of the other fruits I've eaten...

On the other hand, if there was a food I was told would not fit into my eating lifestyle... but it was right in front of me, then, yeah, I would eat it. As long as it isn't a 1,000 calorie loaded cheeseburger and has some nutritional value, chances are I'll eat it because its there and I wouldn't really have a choice-- If your mom packs your lunch, you can either eat the food she gives or not eat at all... (which I don't recommend) or maybe nudge a friend for some of their food if they're nice :)

Eat the banana. It's better to have the vitamins than to worry about calories.

  • polishswede@xanga

They're only 100 calories! It's the same as one of those stupid 100 calorie snack. Eat a banana, they're healthy.

  • LadyLibellule@xanga

One banana is not going to make you obese.  Chill out and eat your fruit.

  • livinforyourname213@xanga

    @mkenyon719@xanga - haha. I meant bad for you as in, "packs on the weight" like the post said. (;

  • blessed_saint_catherine@xanga

Eat the damn banana. Doctors are in the hip pockets of pharmaceutical corporations who would rather you take a potassium supplement than eat the banana with all its "carbs." The carbs in a banana are fine because they are not refined carbs like in white bread, bagels, etc. They will take longer to be absorbed than those carbs as well, reducing the chances that the glucose (which is all a carb really is in the end) will be stored as fat.

I absolutely love bananas, for all the reasons you said. If I am ever feeling tired or weak or sick-ish, I eat a banana and I feel great afterwards. In fact the other day at my grandma's house I binged on like half a bag of Cheetos and my stomach was pissed off at me, so I ate a banana and felt better within five minutes. It is like a miracle fruit.

Your instinct is right! Eat the banana! My best tip for losing weight is to cut out fast food (if you eat it) and cut back on meat in general. Bananas=good.

  • LiViNG_VS_EXiSTiNG@xanga

    bananas are delicious.
    plain and simple.

  • JoyceL168@xanga

well i would eat it ... but not too much ...

  • Maeleene@xanga

The fact of the matter is there are good carbs and there are bad ones. Bananas are very, VERY good for you. If you eat twelve bananas a day, then that's where the good becomes bad, and you gain weight.

Most people are laking in potassium in the diet, not to mention B6 and all vitamins in general. A banana is the perfect supplement to this. If your doctor told you not to eat them anymore, I say find a new doctor, or a competant nutritionist.

Carbs you should cut out of your diet are thing slike white rice, bleached flour, and skittles (sad...), not bananas. I mean, people toot the eat-more-protein horn all the time, but the fact remains, eating ten pounds of beef a day is bad for you. And beef is a protein.

So screw your doctor, peel that darn thing open, and pop it in your mouth. Of course, try hard not to think of health class while you do so. ;)

  • Maeleene@xanga

@livinforyourname213@xanga - Bananas aren't bad for you. -.- Whoever says they are is severely misinformed and an idiot.

Of course, anything in excess can be unhealthy. Even water. But I don't see why anyone would eat twenty bananas in one sitting, aside from extreme boredom or a dare.

  • just_the_average_jane@xanga

I'm pretty sure having a banana once in awhile isn't going to kill you or make you suddenly gain 30 lb.  It's not like you're going on an all-banana diet, so I don't think it's something you need to cut out of your life entirely.  Besides, they're so good!
