"How Many Times Can You Re-Use A Plastic Bottle?"
Healthkicker
A Healthkicker reader sent us a question asking how many times they can re-use a plastic bottle. How many times do you re-use a plastic bottle before tossing it?

I've been using the same plastic water bottle for over a year now. You just have to wash it.
Three or four after that there are just too many germs!
i heard something about the material in the plastic that can affect whatever you're drinking in the bottle
after some time, the plastic starts breaking down but generally i use a bottle about 2-3 times before i toss it!
It depends on the temperature and light regime in the bottle
..I usually throw it out after i have used it once.
As long as it's properly washed, indefinitely.
Three.
a week.
I actually called and taked to a water bottle company about this, and it's only certain types of plastic that breakdown, and water bottles aren't made with it, so it's nothing to worry about. just make sure to wash out the bottles every few uses and ur good.
how do you properly wash a plastic bottle? ...
@Strangebrain@xanga - i dont have any substantial information, but i think that may be a no no. you might be ingesting chemicals
At most, five times.
i only use it once. sorry?
Hm. I've been using the same one for about a month now... Guess it'd be smart to rinse it out with hot water every now and then. And remember, don't just toss, recycle!
i usually reuse water bottles a few times, about 3 or 4 times.
If you wash it daily i'm sure you could use it way more than one, two, or even three times.
A few times. I wash it. The plastic bottles from such as a vending machine will "warp/erode" over time and we end up ingesting some chemicals (from washing) or plastic (from erosion).
But really, you should only use it once.
@BaZoOkArOmZ@xanga - Even the water already in the bottle when you purchased it is already is affected. Bottle water is not as much cleaner as regular tap water. In fact, studies have shown that tap water in most areas is much cleaner and safer to drink than bottled water.
I know what you and people are thinking. "Really?!" It's because the material in bottles are low-density polyethylene. The chemicals used often are, as you said, exposed to the water or whatever you're drinking. Even the "sports" bottles can affect your beverage. This isn't really as harmful as you think, but overtime, yes, chemicals from the plastic are circulating through you.
The safer bet is to used a glass bottle.
..once.
Until I remember I remember to take my cup to school: P
Eh. I just wash and reuse it until it a) breaks b) smells/tastes funny or c) gets lost. Normally, one of these will happen within a week or so, so I don't worry about it too much.
@EaTxYoUxALivE@xanga - I do know what you are refering to, there was a scare sometime between 2003 and 2007 concerning diethylhexyl adipate (DEHA) in water bottles and a correlation with carcinogenesis (cancer). It was actually completely unfounded as the myth came about as a result of the non-peer reviewed work of some grad student whose name escapes me. The FDA did a reavaluation of the students lab techniques which they referred to as (I'm paraphrasing here) "having lacked the scientific rigor expected of an undergrad, let alone a grad student". It was found in the FDA research that reuse of water bottles was found to be completely safe.
I just wash them and try to use them as much as possible. I have other things to worry about that don't involve the germs on a water bottle haha
My family and I use the same few water bottles, and have been for almost a year. We wash them along with our normal dishes.
i dont think u should use plastic bottles at all. you never know how long the waters been in there...
