  • Women Have Tougher Time Resisting Favorite Foods

      Mr. Cheeseburger

Yesterday there was a report in the Washington Post about a new study that said women have a tougher time saying no to their favorite foods compared to their male counterparts.

The report goes on to say evolution might be a reason behind it:

"This gives us another piece to put into this puzzle," said Dr. Gene-Jack Wang, the study's author, who speculated that women may have more trouble saying no to food because they sometimes have to eat for two.

"Maybe evolution leads them to this because of their important mission to have a baby," said Wang, a senior scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory and professor of psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

I can't say I've noticed any women around me having a tougher time saying no.  The only foods I can think of they absolutely can't say no to are, chocolate and cake/cupcake.

Have you noticed any women having a hard time resisting their favorite foods?  Besides the theory that it might be evolution, what other reasons can explain why women might have a harder time resisting their favorite food?

I know that if I see something yummy, I want a bite lol. Any and all thoughts of dieting, calorie counting, the future exercise I will have to do, and so on... they fly straight out of my mind >.<

I've never noticed, actually; and I don't think it's always true. I mean really, look at these women who resist cravings like that easily when they're on a diet. Without even a second thought. If they can do it, the rest of the girls can too. It could very well be psychological though. Sad? Favorite food.

I hate chocolate in huge amounts. However, I can resist a fave food of mine if I've already eaten or am in a pissy mood, so I would say that those findings aren't always true.

in high school i see girls obsess over what they've eaten, how much they've eaten, and if they should eat some more. again and again i see girls, whenever food's presented to them, really think if they can afford it. boys? eh they're hungry or they're not. and if they are, no dainty thought like "oh i shouldn't. i had a big breakfast" is going to stop them.

i don't mean to stereotype. i know many guys who watch their weight. but i've noticed girls express their concerns out loud a lot more, maybe for reassurance from her friends that yes, she can afford eating a cupcake

I haven't eaten any junk food since the beginning of the year and, trust me, it has been hard as hell! But, I've actually stayed strong. Haven't cheated. Haha. :)

I dislike chocolate and cake; easy enough for me! =]

I am woman. I have a hard time resisting any food! Hehe :)

  • xsmallb0nes@xanga

Not sure... but what I don't get is why all the cravings for chocolate/cakes/indulgent junk foods all seem to come during pms!!

I have better self control than most people I know, women or men. Not that I need to exercise it very heavily, with food.
The only thing that's really excruciating to resist is chocolate because I'm a huge chocolate addict (which, may be considered odd since I'm not a huge fan of sweets in general).

I believe that if ladies have a harder time resisting, it's because they're more likely to associate more emotional conotations with food than men tend to do. Which may actually be because of more social conditioning, than genetics imho.

i have a terrible time resisting chocolate.

From my point of view, I think it's just that women care more about it. Most of the men I know, and they just might be a minority, don't care about eating right. They want a cheeseburger; they go get a cheeseburger. But with the women I know a conversation about food is either "No thanks I'm trying to eat healthier." or "I know I shouldn't eat that, but I'm going to anyway."

    i don'tknow... i guess so

  • One_last_time_please@xanga

I think women have a slightly harder time just because there is such a huge pressure on women to be thin and sometimes atleast for me not being able to have something because i want to lose weight makes me crave it even more! And as for guys i dont really know any that are like "i need chocolate right now", i think its a hormonal thing w/ women?

And i agree w/ the other comment women defenetly attach certain foods to emotions, so when those emotions strike its hard resist.

  • Nicola_Six@xanga

I agree with the emotional component - so many women I know think about "ooh chocolate!" or whatnot when they're feeling stressed or unhappy, or even happy.

Also, maybe this is part of it, but it seems like a lot of women I know at some points or other are on a diet that usually requires them to deprive themselves of their favourite food. So when their favourite food is in front of them and they crave it, they go for it.

But yeah, beyond my theories, no clue.

I tried to stop eating greasy, sugary, bad food,
but its so hard when i go to lunch everyday
and my friends bring back fries to our table.
french fries are my favorite food. i can live
without cake, cookies, ice cream, and all
that kind of garbage for the rest of my life
but i dont know if i could live without fries.
but my goal is to cut down and one day
stop eating them because i know there
    really bad for me.

  • smile@revelife

hahah ice cream! i LOOOOOOVE ice cream...and cookies =) aaaand fruits =) and pistachios =) aaaaaand chocolate ...and nuts in general =) aaand hot and sour soup! YUMMY!! AND! some asian desserts =) AAAAAAND! i'll just stop =)

    i love food =)

but then...i've never decided to say no to anything beforehand, so i don't know if it would be hard to "resist" so to say....

  • syntaxerroar@xanga

I have definitely noticed that. My guy friend says it's because boys are too lazy to go rummaging around for good food. He was half kidding
