    50% Still Smoke After Cancer Diagnosis - A West Virginia University survey published in the Journal of Oncology Practice found that 44 percent of smokers quit after being diagnosed with cancer.  Less than two thirds, 62 percent, say they received advice from doctors or nurses about quitting the habit.

    Flu Strain Eludes Vaccine in Houston
    - About half of the Houston influenza specimens tested by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in December were caused by a strain of the illness not covered by this year’s flu vaccine.

    Cleaner air "Adds Months to Life"
    - The New England Journal of Medicine study matched air pollution and life expectancy statistics from 51 cities between 1980 and 2000.  Scientists found people living 2.72 years longer by 2000 - 15% of which they attributed to falls in pollution.

    $635 Million is Donated To Fight Polio - The global effort to eradicate polio, which began more than two decades ago and has suffered repeated setbacks, will receive an additional $635 million in an effort to finish the job over the next five years.

    The money will be used to intensify vaccination campaigns in northern India and northern Nigeria, the two regions that account for more than 80 percent of the remaining cases of the paralyzing infection. In addition to those two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only others where "wild" polio virus still circulates.

    Over 18,000 Birds Culled as Avian Flu Hits Nepal -  Kathmandu - Nepalese health authorities have culled more than 18,000 birds in eastern Nepal, where bird flu was discovered in chickens, official reports said Thursday.  Health authorities focused their efforts on the border town of Kakarbhitta in the Jhapa district, about 450 kilometres east of Kathmandu.
