I Look Like A Tomato After Working Out, How Do I Make It Stop?
Healthkicker
Question Of The Day:As long as I can remember, I've always had problems with my face turning bright bright red when I'm working out (and sometimes even when I'm just really warm).
It makes me really self-conscious because I don't see very many people with this same type of problem. I've heard that it is because of having fair skin and it's just more noticeable on people who have very light skin.
After I'm done working out, the redness subsides and I'm left with bright pink cheeks for quite awhile.
Is this something that I'm stuck with because of my fair skin? How do you get rid of it?

you might consider going to a dermatologist. it might be a condition called rosacea. they will prescribe treatment if they think it's this condition, in either topical or oral form. but for now google "rosacea" and see if you have other symptoms.
I think you're stuck with it and its normal. I remember a girl who works out and her whole face turns bright red except the circles of her eyes and nose.
work out in private?
I have the same problem!!! Any amount of alcohol will do the same. I hate it. I hope someone has a solution out there for us  : )
I have the same problem but I don't worry about it :) Really I figure anybody who would be dumb enough to judge me about something so trivial isn't worth my time.
I also have very fair skin.
hope that helps.
It's possible that you either have:
a) sensitive skin
b) not getting enough oxygen into your body
c) genetics
but yeah, you shouldn't worry about what others think, and if you are, then i suggest seeing a dermatologist..
I also have the same problem. It's only blood flowing and because I'm very fair skinned, it's more visible. I've found that it helps to splash cool water on my face and put something cold, like my water bottle, on my cheeks. There's nothing you can do about it but at least you've got proof that you've been exercising!
I h@kawasaki_saiyan@xanga -
I agree with you.
While I have the same problem, they used to tell me it was because of lack of oxygen which might explain mine because I do tend to get very tired and yawn after working out, but my cousin gets red as well. I wouldn't worry about it. You are working out... not going to a beauty contest! There are so many people that need to be working out that aren't so you and your red face are already one step ahead of tons of people. :)
@youngvan@xanga - when you turn pink, it means you're cute.. and when you turn red, it means you're hot.. i turn neither when i drink, which means i'm neither cute or hot.. but that's because i'm cool as... ;P
I don't think that rosacea has anything to do with it. I think the best you can do is just wash your face with cold water after you finish, or keep a cool washcloth nearby the treadmill/bench/etc.
@youngvan@xanga - turning bright red after consumption of alcohol is due to a lack of a specific enzyme that breaks down alcoholic sugar stuff- or rather the lack of an enzyme to metabolize what's in alcohol.
i have the same problem. but, i grew up having very rosy cheeks year round regardless of what i did or didn't do. it's most obvious in pictures that have bright flash. it's kinda of the reason why i don't like going to the gym, but love working out. personally you shouldn't care though. obviously you've been working out and of course it's pretty natural to have signs of it- ie: sweat marks, "veinier" hands and whatever else.
I don't have fair skin, but I still get red after working out. I don't really think it's a problem. Stop being self conscious and stop trying to fix something that isn't broken.
thats me exactly
when its really hot out in the summer i am BRIGHT red
and after i do cardio im ridiculous
it goes away afterwhile
this happens to me as well..
This is completely normal. When you're working out the brain opens the capilaries, increasing blood flow throughout the body. The more you work out, the sooner this response will occur.
There are two reasons that blood flow increases. The first is to ensure that the muscles that need increased oxygen get it. The second reason, and the reason that is more reasonable for your situation, is for cooling.
Since the secondary reason is the only one you can control...you need to keep yourself as cool as possible. If you're using antipersprint, stop. Perspiration...though "icky" is a necessity to keep your body temp regulated.
So, I'd recommend that any drink you have should be well chilled. The recommendation of Lizbeth8207@xanga is a good one. Cold water...cooler shower after a workout, should decrease the time the redness occurs for.
Other than that....there's nothing you can do. Sorry
same here also.
it doesnt bother me much though and i dun think theres anything can do w/ it.
that is just part of working out.
its not a beauty pagent.
get over it :)
me too. my face turns as red as a tomato after working out. probbly due to fair ski, but who knows
I turn red like a tomato too, and like someone else on here said, alcohol does the same thing. It's a phenomenon known as flushing.
Your skin has lots of little blood vessels in it, and when your core body temperature gets above a certain temperature, your hypothalamus (the temperature regulating organ in your body) tells those little blood vessels to get bigger, so they do- and it carries blood (and heat) away from your vital internal organs, so they don't get damaged by the heat.
Unfortunately for some people like you and me, either the blood vessels in the skin on our faces are closer to the surface than for other people, or we could possibly have more of those blood vessels than others. Just make sure to keep well hydrated, and maybe adjust the air conditioning to make it cooler to make your body not have to work so hard to cool you off.
Moral of the story: it's normal, it's healthy, it's your body trying to cool off. And no, everyone at the gym is not staring down your red face. If you're uncomfortable with it, try wearing a different color shirt- some colors make it less noticeable. Black works for me.
