  • Go Red For Women's Health & Awareness

I am not much of a community activist, but this is one cause very close to my heart - literally.  Four years ago, my mother died unexpectedly from a heart attack.

She left two daughters in their twenties, three grandchildren (one of whom she had never met - and how many more she will never hold?), and countless friends who still needed her.  The sudden shock of it still haunts me.

Since then, my family has become active in the  Go Red For Women campaign by the American Heart Association.  This movement seeks to raise the awareness our we did not have - that heart attack is the number one killer of women in America today, and more than the next four causes of death combined.  About one woman each minute dies of cardiovascular disease. Surprisingly, 64% of women who die suddenly of a heart attack had no previous heart related symptoms.

What can we do? Join the Go Red campaign, and sign up for newsletters and updates on events in your area.  Stay healthy, by eating right and exercising regularly.  Talk to your doctor about your family history and heart health risks, and make sure he is aware of your over-all health.  And most of all, take care care of your own health vigilently, so you can in turn care for your loved ones.

This is not just another public service announcement regarding some vague health threat.  Our loved ones need us to be around to love and care for them, like I wish my mother were still here for me.  Taking care of our heart health is another way we can continue to show love for those around us.

Have or your family been ever been affected by some form of cardiovascular disease?

i know how you feel, my grandma died of an heartattack in nov. it was totally unexpected - we had always thought she would live for quite a few more years yet. Ever since our family has contributed money for more research and development on the issue of heartattacks. I also plan to run some races if possible which support the heart&stroke foundation.

I'm sorry. :( My grandpa died from a heart attack too. I think it's important that we increase awareness, and encourage a healthy diet and exercise. :( It makes me sad seeing people who should be exercising nix it from their routine. :(
And I remember this organization. Angela Kinsley from the Office and Jenna Fischer did something with this last year. :)
