  • Birth Control Pill Is Destroying My Sex Life

I recently began taking birth control pills for a number of reasons including helping regulate my periods, to eliminate cramps, and the obvious: for birth control.

I am only in my second month of taking it, but I have already noticed several side effects, the worst of which is a lowered sex drive.

I am currently in a relationship and began taking the birth control a couple months into our relationship. Before I was on the pill, I enjoyed having sex with my boyfriend.

Since starting the pill, my mood has changed, which I know is a common side effect, and we hardly have sex at all anymore. It's all, of course, because of my lack of a libido.

I found several articles about this online but am not sure what to do.

I like having lighter and shorter periods, but I do not like how this seems to be effecting my sex drive.

I was just wondering if anyone else has suffered these same side effects? If so, what did you do? Did you completely get off birth control? Did you switch brands?

Yup, I felt them! You should try a different birth control or talk to your doctor about it. She/he will know what to prescribe instead. Maybe the real way birth control works is by making you not want sex. :p

Yes, I was on NuvaRing for the better part of a year and while my mood hasn't been affected, after a few months, my sex drive started to plummet.  It's nearing nonexistent.  It made me really depressed over the last few months (I've been feeling better about it lately) when I started realizing how rarely I got aroused.  I used to have to make myself focus at work or class because the slightest dirty thought really got me going, but now I don't feel much even when I have a dirty thought -- if I ever do.  I took a break from it for a few months and since there wasn't any changes, I went back on it for a month, and then off again a few weeks ago.  I hope that doesn't fuck with my chemistry too much.  But anyway, my sex drive hasn't returned to normal... huge sadface.

There are other things involved, too, like issues that I was having with my boyfriend and also depression, so they may be contributing factors... but that's for right now.  Before, when I first started noticing my lack of sex drive, there wasn't anything going on, so I'm almost sure it was the birth control.

I just started on birth control, Microgestin..  And my sex drive is already low enough.  Hopefully it doesn't lower mine even more.

I've been on Ortho Tricyclen Lo-dose for nearly two years. It did lower my sex drive a little, but honestly that was a good thing. It's awkward to be hornier than one's boyfriend/husband! The only real problem with it? My sex drive is highest when I'm on my period... because I'm not getting any outside hormones. Haha so that's interesting...

Not all pills are created equal.  Switching brands might help.

    Completely.

My boyfriend used to joke that birth control only works because the girl never wants sex when on it!

I tried a few kinds, all had the same effect. I mean, next to 0 libido, on top of some dryness (if you know what I mean ._.) The doctor basically said I would feel it with any type I try, so I just stopped and went back to intercourse-abstinence. I'd rather have a sex drive that we can solve in other fashions than the ability to have sex without the desire.

Sorry, wish I could be more helpful.

i've heard a lot about the side effects of using the pill. i'm a very cautious person, so i don't think i'll ever use the pill.

i'm having the same problem w/ the birth control lowering my sex drive to non-existence... i think i'm going to try a different brand that my friend has been using without any major side effects (Seasonique) because my poor boyfriend is going crazy!!! plus, that pill is the one with only like 3 periods a year :3

This is probably because of the amount of hormones your birth control pill has. I think it will be best if you talk to your doctor. Again, this is only your second month so your body might be just trying to get adjust to it.
I remember the first time I took birth control pills my mood just changed drastically. I talked to my doctor about the problem and she said it was probably the side effects and the amount of hormones in it. So I switched my birth control and now I am fine.

"I found several articles about this online but am not sure what to do."
I'm sure the articles said to switch to a different pill

I switched and I'm fine now
For a period of time i didn't want to have sex and was very mean to my boyfriend

@abcxunt@xanga - Wow, I did not know girls could pull out. I thought only guys can. x)

you talk to your doctor like an intelligent individual.  and then take it from there..... ;)

  • be__quiet@xanga

YES.  That was one of the major side effects -- no more sex drive.  I took the Yaz birth control pill, and it was like I didn't even think about sex with my boyfriend anymore; I hated it.  It got to the point where I just stopped taking the pill because it bothered me so much.

I did ask my doctor if there was another kind that wouldn't take away my sex drive.  However she was less than helpful and tried to talk me into staying with my current birth control (which I've had other, worse side effects with -- fainting, nausea, terrible cramps, etc.) so I thought 'screw it' and just stopped taking it.  I'd rather have careful sex than not enjoy/want to have sex at all. So I can't say for sure if there's one out there that won't take away your sex drive, but I would imagine that there is.  Just be sure to research it well before you switch if you do decide you want to stay on some form of the pill.
  • disorderedpersonality@xanga

Try switching to a lower-dose pill? IDK. The first birth control I was on did that to me, amongst other and more problematic side effects. I switched to OTC-Lo and its much more tolerable. Best of luck and I hope you find a solution quickly!

talk to your doctor, talk to your doctor, talk to your doctor.  if they are not helpful, see a gynecologist.  i've had to be on three different types of birth control for various reasons, mostly involving mood, and i am so happy to have one now that works for me and my body so i feel like myself when i'm on it (sex drive included).  everyone is different and a good doctor will be willing to help you find a brand that works for you.  hope you get your libido back up soon! =)

  • steph843@xanga

Talk to you doctor about how youre feeling and see about him or her prescribing another kind of birth control pill. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 months for your body to climatize to the new pill (ie a lot of women have spotting, bloating at first), but at the same time what fun is being on birth control if you don't want to have sex anymore?

  • vous_etnulautre@xanga

completely. my boyfriend and i went from having sex 5 to 6 times a week to every couple weeks.. i think it's starting to get a little better, but nowhere near like it used to be. i've been on the pill since last june.

  • Create_Passion@xanga

everybody's reaction to the Pill is different, and every brand is different too. I would talk to your doctor and get suggestions from him/her. I also heard that sometimes the side effects go away after the first 2 or 3 months, its just a matter of waiting through it. I never had to switch brands or anything but talk to your doctor and maybe try a different brand.

  • easily_amused17@xanga

I was on Yaz for a while and labeled it the pill of death. I had the worst side effects ever and hated it so much. I switched to Loestrin Fe 24 and it's amazing. I don't even know I'm on it except for all the positive side effects it's supposed to have.

Just talk to your doctor...you just need to find a pill that works for you :]
