  • Major Sweet Tooth With Allergies, Not A Good Combo

I'm a 24 year old female, married, have a 2 year old, and a moderate amount of stress.  Whenever I feel stressed out about money, my family, or anything, I turn to the old standby… sweets.  Actually, I generally go for something salty at first, then something sweet.

Mostly, I try to be good and eat popcorn (Orville Redenbacher Natural Butter Popcorn is my favorite) and I buy a huge load of grapes at the grocery store to clean and portion out to have a tasty frozen treat after popcorn.

But when the popcorn and grapes run out, I stop following “good” rules and buy chips, or buy/make cookies, brownies, ice cream… you get the idea.

With a 2 year old, I make a lot of macaroni and cheese for lunch, paired with green beans or corn, and a lot of pizza or pasta dishes for dinner. Basically, there are lots of starches with very few vegetables.  I love these foods, and I know the ratio's aren't very healthy, but I can't help it.  The veggies are served in such small portions because of one big problem: I have a LOT of food allergies.  I would absolutely love to get back in shape, eat healthier, and still not spend a ridiculous amount of money on groceries, but  I get so tired of trying to find good tasting food that both my son and I can actually eat.

My allergies seem endless: all nuts other than peanuts and almonds, bananas, kiwi, coconut, carrot, apple, celery, cabbage... to name a few. Those are the major foods, and it’s made it quite difficult for me to try to eat healthier, since I think apples and celery are some of the healthier options out there.

I’d really like to start getting healthy, but I need some help with this.

Does anyone else suffer from a lot of food allergies?  What do you eat to stay healthy, but to avoid any allergic reaction?  Are there any healthy recipes out there that can avoid large amounts of vegetables?

I'm allergic to several foods but just at times, so I'm not really sure what exactly it is. I try to vary a lot and avoid eating the same thing too often.

have you tried going to a nutritionist? a couple of visits and one could probably help you a lot with your veggies vs. allergies dilemma! :3

Go see a nutritionist and if you can't afford one, then I suggest you do a little research on other ways of eating.

There's a million vegetables out there, green leafy ones (those are the ones you should be eating). Broccoli and spinach are one of the few. It's also important to have tomatoes and carrots..(you said you eat pizza so i'm guessing you're not allergic to tomato). It's best to eat them raw so have a salad here and there. You can try taking supplements but nothing is better than real food. And there is no such thing as a healthy diet without vegetables, and fruits. They are a major food group.

I don't think you should be trying to avoid vegetables.  That's not healthy in the long run.  You should be looking for the vegetables that you can eat.  What about spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, or cucumbers?

If you really are "allergic" to everything, you should see someone about it.  There may be something that can be done.  Heck, there was news this week about a possible cure for the peanut allergy, which is one of the most extreme (and potentially fatal) out there!

@LadyLibellule@xanga - @Neurotically_Mine@xanga - JUST FOR THE RECORD: I am not trying to avoid vegetables.  I WANT to
eat vegetables.  They edited this and made it seem like I don't.  Just
thought I'd clarify.  I just wanted recipes that don't include the veggies I'm allergic to (they make my throat close up) like carrots, celery, and cabbage.

i'm onion and garlic intollerant. i get the same side effects from a lot of raw veggies, like colliflower, broccoli, and peppers.
I get my green fill by steaming green beans. and zucchini.
I also take a supplement in the morning called 'greens plus'. i mix it into my orange juice. it has bee pollen in it, and might cause allergies though.

but it'd suggest adding a side of beans (with olive oil and salt and pepper) or zucchini (cooked in olive oil and cherry or white wine) to the regular starchy pasta dishes. it's what i do!!

@ElidabitAimStuffin@xanga - you could go on recipe.com... or you can google recipes that don't have the vegetables you are allergic to in it.

@ElidabitAimStuffin@xanga - I don't know who the Healthkicker staff are, but they seem to know next to nothing about health.  This is the second time in as many days that an author of a post has said something like this in response to one of my comments ("I didn't say that!  Healthkicker edited it!").

Why can't Healthkicker just leave posts as they are?

  • ElidabitAimStuffin@xanga

@LadyLibellule@xanga - I can understand editing for content, fixing grammar or whatever... but adding things that make me seem bad is just not right.

As for your suggestions, I try to eat as many of my non-allergy veggies as possible.  The problem with eating a LOT of veggies, as well as seeing a specialist, is the money issue.  We don't have a lot, and veggies tend to be a lot more pricey and are much more perishable than something like mac and cheese, which is why I usually try to get a balanced ratio of frozen and fresh veggies.  And my health insurance sucks, so the specialist thing is sort of out of the question   But I'm trying.  I'll open up to more options like spinach and sweet potato.
