On March 9, 2009, President Obama lifted the ban on government funded
stem cell research originally put in place by the former Bush administration. With the ban, stem cell research was only allowed to be funded privately and done behind closed doors with little outside observation and regulations in place. Research information will now be forced to be public since trials will be using government money. Because of this, regulations can be set, procedures will be safer, and more research and trials can be conducted to find the most effective ways to harvest and manipulate the cells.
How do you feel about stem cell research? What issues arise with this ban being lifted? Do you feel it is a step in the right direction or a waste of time?

It's definitely a step in the right direction. Those who are against it seem to be mostly against creating new embryos in order to research them. I don't think that will happen, and that's certainly not what is happening here.
Yay, stem cell research. =]
I'm fine with ADULT stem-cell research... embryonic stem-cells are where I draw the line.
Step in the right direction.
kudos
Embryonic stem cell research is WRONG. It takes a life. Not to mention it doesn't even work! It is because of this that Obama lifted the ban. He has no care whatsoever for human life.
Adult stem cell research, however, is absolutely fine. It does nothing to the donor and has been proven very affective.
@Audiofreak18@xanga - what if the person was going to abort anyway? why not make something good of it?
Embryonic stem cell research is wrong. It takes away innocent human lives.
Adult and neonatal stem cell research has done a world of good already and they do no harm to the donor so doing embryonic stem cell research would be scientifically backsliding
@deprivation_now@xanga - Do
the ends justify the means??? I certainly don't think so! How would you
feel if the were researching on and destroying 5 year olds? would that
make it different?
I think that we should have stem cell research. If those cells can help people in any way, we should use to them to do so.
They are just going to be disposed of so why not use them?
Of course, there are the ethical issues dealing with stem cell research. However, I believe that if the fetus is going to be aborted and not allowed to develop into a baby...It should be used towards science.
yes! go Obama! Here is a fan from Sweden rooting for you! The ban on stem cell research was silly
Great step in the right direction!
@deprivation_now@xanga - Abortion is also WRONG. It does not justify it in any way. If it means taking a life, then it is no longer "good use". Two wrongs do not make any rights.
@ashay24w@xanga - If the person aborts, surely that is different from the slaying of children. The point is that if the child is being aborted for any reason, I believe it is better to give it a purpose despite having not lived a full life as opposed to it just being tossed aside.
yay! it can really help tons of people who are suffering from diseases, and increase our knowledge about our health.
you also save a life. besides, those lives arent born yet, what if the person dosent even want the baby? have you ever thought of overpopulation -> not enough resources -> global warming etc etc?
good job.
@Audiofreak18@xanga - that's YOUR opinion
@deprivation_now@xanga - No, that is the simple truth.
@XxRobenXxAce@xanga - How is it any different?? What do you think a fetus is? If it's not a baby, the woman isn't pregnant. The point is, it is a baby from the time of conception so having any form of an abortion is unethical.
@XxRobenXxAce@xanga - How is abortion any different from slaying a young life? thats what it is a slaying of a young life for mostly selfish reasons!
And Embryonic stem cell research is done in a lab not with an aborted child. but it is still wrong because it is still a human life.
Hasn't anyone wondered why it needs federal funding? If it was so great the free market would have developed it.
And the ban was on embryonic stem cell research.
The truth is, adult SCR is much more promising than ESCR and is already reaping health benefits.
step in the RIGHT DIRECTION.
finally someone is putting aside their religious views and really thinking about the "greater good" just imagine how many diseases can be prevented, cancer ,AIDS, ect.and lifes that can be saved.
this is the stuff government spending should be on NOT machineguns.
@Audiofreak18@xanga - you're an idiot
@deprivation_now@xanga -I value human life and that makes me an idiot? If that's the case then I'm proud of it.
@Audiofreak18@xanga - I totally agree with you! Don't let anyone elses' rude comments bother you.
@deprivation_now@xanga - I heard before that when the person from one side of the argument is out of ideas, they rely to name calling. Ring any bells?
@deprivation_now@xanga - She IS NOT an idiot she values human lives!
