I received a forwarded email the other day from a friend who now lives in the US.
She's been a registered nurse for more than ten years so I think she's a reliable source on health issues like breast cancer.
I'd like to share this to everybody here on
Healthkicker/
Xanga so I'm copyin and pasting the email as is:
Thank you to the original sender.
Cancer Update from John Hopkins
This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Centeras well.
No plastic containers in microwave.
No water bottles in freezer.
No plastic wrap in microwave.
A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer.
Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic
bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.
Recently, Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital ,
was on a TV program to explain this health hazard.
He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.
He said that we should not be heating our food in the
microwave using plastic containers...
This especially applies to foods that contain fat.
He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin
into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body...
Instead, he recommends using glass, such as CorningWare, Pyrex or ceramic
containers for heating food... You get the same results, only without the dioxin.
So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc.,
should be removed from the container and heated in something else.
Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper.
It's just safer to use tempered glass,CorningWare, etc.
He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away
from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons...
Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when
placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high
heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food.
Cover food with a paper towel instead.
ALSO -------------------------------------
Bottled water in your car (is) very dangerous.
This is how Sheryl Crow got breast cancer. She was on the
Ellen show and said this same exact thing. This has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels in breast cancer, especially in Australia .
A friend whose mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and the Doctor told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car.
The doctor said that the heat and the plastic of the bottle have certain chemicals that can lead to breast cancer. So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car, and, pass this on to all the women in your life. This information is the kind we need to know and be aware and just might save us ! The heat causes toxins from the plastic to leak into the water and they have found these toxins in breast tissue. Use a stainless steel Canteen or a glass bottle when you can!
How often do you reuse plastic water bottles or containers? Do you know anyone that is suffering from breast cancer?

gosh, everything causes cancer nowadays.
tigerdauphin@xanga,
EXACTLY what I was going to say.
It really does seem like everything causes cancer!
Geez. What doesn't cause cancer nowadays?
I reuse a lot of plastic containers and bottles...
shiiiiiit!
We should just stop using plastic altogether. Less waste when you use reusable materials like glass, ceramics, metal water bottles, etc.
This is scary.. I re-use water bottles all the time. Never in the freezer though.. I'll make sure I don't use them in cars!
This is not true; it's an urban myth. The minute the post mentioned a "forwarded email" I knew. Here's a link to a Snopes.com article addressing part of this: http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/cookplastic.asp
@Erin1022@xanga - The "e-mail" thing was a red flag to me, too. Glad you checked into it, saved me the trouble!
I just hope others see it as well.
I haven't heard the thing about dioxins. As far as I'm aware, the danger from plastics comes from xenoestrogens, which can mimic estrogen in the body and lead to hormone-related cancers (such as breast cancer).
It's better to get away from plastics where possible, anyway. Most plastics are made from a non-renewable resource and end up in the landfill where they'll sit for hundreds (if not thousands) of years.
Why does everything cause cancer!? what the hell?
Honestly, I reuse my water bottle nonstop, but I dont freeze it.
But out of all the things that cause cancer, this is probably way down on the list of things to be careful of, unless this is a damn lifestyle.
Since just about everything causes cancer nowadays, I think this is utter nonsense. Please note what Erin1022@xanga said in her response.
Urban legend.
uhhh this was disproved on snopes already.
Well, I guess I have cancer!
i reuse plastic water bottles for school D:
Um... this is old news. you americans really surprise me.
use waterbottles that are BPA free.
i thought it caused a buch of different kinds of cancer....everything gives you cancer
@tigerdauphin@xanga - concur.
haha i know seriously, theres so many things we need to be aware of
what are the sources????
Like a few others have said, this isn't true. Why doesn't healthkicker check these things before posting them on the main page?
That was an urban legend. Learn to Google, please.

I think I prove my point.
Otherwise, nothing you've named in your post is news. As someone else said here, use water bottles that are BPA free.
I use plastic water bottles quite frequently because the stuff you buy from the supermarket is sold in plastic bottles and the tap water in our area is so full of calcium it tastes like milk... and I don't like milk.
I don't know anyone suffering from breast cancer, but my mum's recently finished treatment for throat cancer.
