I Keep Getting Headaches, and Pills Just Aren't Working
I've been getting headaches a lot more frequently than usual lately, and simple Aspirin isn't working anymore.I don't think they're migraines; I can still function fine and the pain isn't overwhelming, but the pressure is there and annoying. I haven't had much trouble with headaches before, so I don't know what the alternatives to Tylenol might be.
How do you get rid of headaches? What are some alternatives to over-the-counter drugs for headaches?

Have you tried laying off of the pills ?
it sounds like sinus congestion to me. When I get headaches that don't respond to anything but 800 mg motrin and codiene, its usually sinuses. A doctor at the Student Death Center gave me Rhinocort (I think that's how you spell it) the last time I went in for a sinus infection. It works really well to prevent allergic reactions leading to congestion, pain, and eventual infections (pain that doesn't respond to anything).
You can also get Tylenol or Ibuprofen with a decongestant. These are usually marked for Sinus pain. If you have a good pharmarcy, the pharmarcy counter will have the stuff with psuedoephedrine in it. It works better than the replacement for psuedoephedrine. If not, get real psuedophed or an allergy medicne with psuedoephedrine. They are going to check your driver's license and ask for your address etc b/c the law says they have to (b/c of stupid meth labs). If you are a student, the pharmacy won't give you as hard of a time.
The way I prevent congestion and therefore pain is that I use the Neti-pot and yes it is very wierd. Someone suggested it to me 8 years ago and I didn't try it until last year b/c I was so freaked out by the videos. I was amazed. It really does clear congestion and clean out allergens that can cause congestion. If you don't want to use the tea pot looking one, they have one another one, the tea pot one works best.
Saline solution works OK, but once you get really congested, it won't clear the congestion out.
Are you eating healthily? Eating too many processed foods can do that to you.
I sleep to get rid of headaches if they become rather bothersome.
There are number of reasons for having headaches that OTC pain relievers can't squash. If you've only used Tylonel (acetaminophim), try anoter NSAID, like Aleve (naproxen) or Motrin (Ibuprofen). If those don't work...
It could be a sinsus headache as mentioned above. Try an OTC remedy. This is allergy season, afterall, and many people suffer allergies symptoms like headache pain and pressure this time of year.
The headache could also be caused by elminating something from your diet that your body has grown dependent on, like caffiene. The solution is to have some caffiene and then wean yourself off gradually, instead of cold turkey.
Do you need your eyes checked? Vision problems can often cause headaches.
If none of that is the problem or works, talk with your doctor. Headaches are also a symptom of some biggies. For instance, high blood pressure, tumors, or other things...
i've been in a similar situation and my doctor told me i had tension headaches. i'm not sure if this applies to you, but sometimes if you sit for long periods in front of the computer, it would cause a strain in your neck muscle, which is also connected to your scalp muscles and affects them.
i started doing more neck stretches and gave myself some scalp massages, plus my doctor prescribed me naproxen if i really needed it and it helped.
hope you feel better soon!
honesty, same
pills don't always help me either
but i think for me its stress. because i used to never get headaches
maybe do things that will relax you
like call a friend if your upset. if things seem too crazy take a bubble bath, read a book, go on a walk, paint a picture
it might help
i hope things work outxoxoxox
migraine? check it outt.
I take the Advil Liqui-Gels whenever I have a headache because I think they work faster (except I take 3 at a time). However, I also think exercising on a regular basis helps with headaches.
There are all kinds of things that can cause headaches:
- dehydration
- TMJ
- food allergies
- muscle knots/spasms
- sinus congestion
- vision problems
It's worth looking into, if it's interfering with your life. The solution may be something really simple.
i had headaches like that for months, finally my doctor figured out that it was allergies. soon after that my family discovered we had a severe mold problem in the basement. that was all taken care of, no more headaches. [ps, depending on the location it could be a tooth ache bothering your jaw]
I take a long, hot shower, drink green tea, and then sleep for a few hours or take a short nap. Usually, it's gone but if it isn't, then I just live with it.
I think you should check out what you're eating and if you're getting the right amount of sleep. Cuz sometimes you may be falling behind on the adequate amount of both, and that's the way your body tells you.
If it's around that time of the month, take iron supplements. Females get headaches when they have too much copper and not enough iron during their period. I tried it, It works for me.
Also, take a daily vitamin, you man not be getting the nutrition you need.
There are several reasons people get headaches.
I'd suggest step up on eating well, pleanty of water, and some good sleep. Also, never underestimate the benefits of a cup of tea.
I don't know if you're into herbal remedies and such but I am so I can at least tell you about it if you are. If you take oregano, fresh or dried, wrap it in a cloth, and damp it with really hot water you can place that on your forehead and rest awhile. It doesn't work everytime as it tends to depend on the nature of the headache.
i had a low-grade headache for two weeks before i finally went to the dr. turned out it was a sinus infection, just needed some antibiotics and i was good.
also my headaches (when they are not sinus infections), only respond to ibuprofen (like Advil), which works differently than Tylenol. aspirin found in drugs like Tylenol work as blood thinners, ibuprofen works as an anti-inflammatory.
I had migraines too before. bad ones too. The things I’ve done to make them go away is:
Food: Your body might be hungry but you’re not. That makes it go away. If that doesn’t work,Prescripted pills: the ones I get are exspensive. You take them only when you have it... 25 per pill.
I usually just eat, then take Advil like suggested above, and then drink lots of water after. Sometimes, maybe some sleep if the time for it could be fit into the schedule, or maybe a nice hot cup of tea towards the morning to ease whatever it is.
I'm on the same page. Every day for years now, I've had a headache - a migraine. Just about every single day. I've had, for instance, constant migraines for two weeks now. They're just now starting to calm down.
I honestly don't know what you could do. If they got too terrible you could go to the hospital and get a shot, but that would only last so long.
The doctors told me that when you even begin to feel like a headache is about to begin, take Aspirin / Tylenol / Excedrin right then. Don't wait. There's a higher chance that you'll be able to block it before it starts than there is of you making it go away once it's began.
maybe it has to do with ur stress level
Maybe you're dehydrated? How's your sleeping schedule?
Normally, when I have intense tension/stress related headaches I drink some ground ivy tea (also known as gill tea, from a plant called creeping charlie, a common backyard "pest").
I get headaches like that, as well. They aren't strong enough to be migraines, but MAN do they make me feel like crap. And I can still function (most of the time), but they're bad enough that they're a big distraction, and I don't WANT to function.
Excedrin Migraine works SOMETIMES. And I've sometimes found success in mixing OTC pain meds. One Excedrin Migraine, one Aleve Liquigel, one Advil Liquigel. That works sometimes.
I went to the doctor about it, and she said they sounded like migraines, but not at the same time--because I'm not sensitive to light, etc. She gave me migraine medicine (I've tried it all--it works to get rid of the headaches, but it makes the rest of my body feel like I have a hangover. Frova, so far, has been the best at getting rid of the headaches while not making me feel so bad.) She also gave me a low grade prescription pain pill called Ultracet, and that usually works, too. You might want to go to the doctor to see if they can prescribe something like that for you.
My doctor also said that my headaches are probably caused by hormones because I didn't really start getting them until I got on the pill. And I'm almost always guranteed to have a nasty headache two days before I start my period. The Frova works for that. Axert, another migraine medicine, helps, too. Imitrex works well, but like I said--hangover.
Really, the only thing that GURANTEES me to get rid of it is sleep--but I can't exactly sleep when I'm at work, and I hate wasting my night sleeping as soon as I get home from work when I could be doing other things.
As for natural remedies, magnesium supplements are supposed to help with headaches and migraines. I don't know if it actually DOES, though, because I usually forget to take one in the morning, even though I usually intend to.
It could be sinus headaches or a headache from stress, which regular pills won't take care of usually.
The other option is if you're used to taking the same one type of pain reliever EVERY TIME you have a headache, your body can get too used to it and it will stop having the proper effect.
I've had this problem with Tylenol, Alieve, Advil, and Ibuprofen, which I was doctor recommended to take daily for a knee problem since I was 10. 8 years later, none of those pills will do a thing for me. Now that my knees are no longer an issue, I'm not taking them all the time, but my body still can't do what it's supposed to with them if i try to take them for a headache.
The only thing that works for me now is Motrin, and even that takes three or four of the 200mg pills to do much, now that i've been taking it for a while.
So I'd say figure out if they're actually headaches or if they're sinus/stress related first. If they are, try medicine geared towards that. If they're regular headaches, buy a new type of pain reliever for when you get them and *SWITCH IT UP*. Use two different types and don't always use the same one. It'll help keep your body from doing what mine did if they happen to become more common.
fortunately, I don't suffer from neither migraine nor any other kind of headache. But it happens sometimes, so I try to find out if I've eaten something unhealthy. Anyway, when it happens, I do something that really, really works for me: in my bedroom, I turn the lights off, sit on the floor in a comfortable position, straight backs, and breath rightly and deeply (inhaling and exhaling through the nose) during about 5 minutes. After that, I do that yoga position - upside down over my head, legs stretched (leaning them on the wall if I can't manage to balancing them on the air), always breathing correctly - for at least 3 minutes. It works for me, that is, for occasional headaches only!
I don't excactly have many real headaches, it is just the pressure on the back of my head. I have been taking four advils and they don't help much at all. Can anyone help other my mother?
I get all sorts of different kinds of headaches and have been getting migraines since 2nd grade and there are a variety of OTC medicines you could try. Besides Tylenol like others said there is Naproxin & Ibuprofen. Most of the time Tylenol doesn't work for me because I had it so much as a child, but Ibuprofen helps most of the time. Naproxin seems to work best on my stress headaches & the ones I get around my period. Then on top of those there are also different Excedrin medicines. I recently fell in love with Excedrin Menstrual Complete, but have used the express release Excedrin Tension Headache medicine for awhile and love how fast it works usually within 15-30 min. For some of my lighter migraines I can get away with using Excedrin Migraine and also sometimes I use plain old Excedrin Extra Strength. For some reason the combination of things in Excedrin seem to make a difference. Like others said though if you are getting headaches frequently and didn't before you should probably talk to you doctor as there could be all sorts of causes. Sadly my main trigger is stress and that is hard to get rid of, so instead I manage the headaches during times when I can't reduce stress.
