  • I Want To Lose Weight, Not My Butt

I am new to this whole weight loss thing and right now I don't know if I like it.

I lost about 20 pounds since January. While this is all great and all but I don't like how the weight is coming off. What's my problem with losing weight?  I am African American.

Black if you will. This means one important thing when it comes to my body type.....I have a butt. A rather large one at that.

Well, at least I'm used to it. It seems like this time I lost weight, the first thing to go was my butt. Could I lose weight in my flabby stomach area?? No. Of course not. That probably would have made me too happy. So now I find myself in a dilemma. I have lost an entire pant size! However, I am not "happy" with the rest of my body. So how can I continue to lose weight and NOT lose the remaining portion of my butt.

I thought maybe I would just do strength training and something like pilates, but how can I get my heart-rate up?

Not to mention, I feel like I still have a lot of fat to get rid of. If I just do strength moves and pilates will that still burn the fat away or will I have a toned stomach under layers of stupid fat?

    you can't stop reduce.enough said.

doing exercises like pilates or yoga are anaerobic exercises (mostly for toning)-- if you want to burn fat you have to do aerobics -- in order for fat to burn you need your heart rate up to deliver oxygen throughout ur body.

Although with weight loss you will always shed off weight, your body tend to naturally reproportion itself -- unfortunately theres nothing you can really do but to do less exercises that will focus around your rear.

Doing stairs will burn fat however it will keep your butt VERY perky and plump!!! anyone can have a nice big butt -- but not everyone can have a sexy toned perky one ;) so maybe focus on that if all else fails :)

You can build muscle in your butt, but you can't spot reduce.  I'd say continue doing cardio to burn fat, but build up your muscle in your glutes and thighs.

  • serendipity3m@xanga

I agree with the others. Build up muscle in your glutes. There is a glute machine that your gym may have (if you go to one). Or even just doing cardio (such as walking on an incline on the treadmill) will build up muscle in your booty. I've noticed an improvement in the firmness and even perkiness of my butt when I started getting into a regular cardio routine.

um... build muscle in your butt? it'll seem like it's shrinking at first, but if you continue building muscle, it'll come back, and you'll be able to fulfill the plea of sir mix-a-lot once again. girl, I feel for you. I'm in love with my posterior as well.

I'm doing P90X and it works great so far.

I'm Asian (duh lol) but I always had a big butt.  You know, the shelf butt.  When I started to lose weight, my butt went away!  At first I was happy since it looked more proportional - but then it got kind of small and now it's not perky anymore.

So I'm trying what everyone already recommend - build muscle in my butt.  I don't want one as muscly as Serena's, but it would still look nicer than a big jiggly butt.

    Good luck with yours!

if you want to lose fat, you want to lose fat. your butt and your breats are the fattiest parts of your body, so of course they'll go first.

what's so bad about a toned but anyway? i think they look great :]

I'm black too and while I had no "junk in my trunk" to begin with I noticed after losing weight it definitely got smaller. Unfortunately where you lose fat from on your body is due to genetics. So yes, you'll just be toned under layers of fat if you stop now.
Now you have to decide if you want to be overweight (and possibly unhealthy) with a booty or in shape, (healthy),and proportionate.

you can't spot reduce.  if we could pick and choose which parts of our bodies to lose weight from, we'd all be perfect.  If you want your butt to look perky, then you should use a star climber, or do hills on the treadmill/elliptical.

Anyway, if you pick the right kind of yoga, you will get your heart rate up and you will sweat.  If you do weight training properly you can get your heart rate up

Do Lunges+Squats and build muscle in your butt
I'm sure it will look better since your butt was mostly fat before

  • vanillaaaa@xanga

i wish i could lose my butt. D:

  • scoopsofpoops@xanga

keep exercising, and eventually you will lose your stomach too and your butt will look bigger once your stomach is gone.  Keep doing lunges and squats those exercise the large muscle groups, and bring up your heart rate and burn more calories and fat...keep it up..you will look even more beautiful.

Didn't you read the other comments? You can't spot reduce.

I'm white and have always had a bubble butt (my black friends call it the ghetto booty). And it seems like it's even more pronounced when I lose weight, so please, tell me what you did to lose it!!!!
I found out the reason I have always kept it ... mass amounts of elliptical, lunges and squats. Maybe you should try them, they're great for toning the tushy. :)
