Are Doctors Turning To Drugs and Alcohol To Relieve Stress?
I have seen and heard many doctors and nurses turning to drugs, alcohol, and smoking. No one has yet to give me a solid explanation. The few doctors I spoke to said it's to relieve stress, but somehow I doubt that.
Why are doctors turning to drugs and alcohol? Do you think it's due to the pressures of their work or for pleasure? Do you know anyone all of a sudden turning to these things for whatever reason?

Legalize weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed??
Why does it matter what other people do in their spare time to relieve stress? It's not like it affects you unless doctors are going to work inebriated. Stop being such a nosy, judgmental bastard.
Its because they are effective methods which are cheaper than prescriptions and easily attainable.
How is this a bad thing? Doctors are in high-stress occupations - I can completely empathize with and understand their need to "relax." Granted, I don't think they're choosing healthy ways of "de-stressing"... but that's their choice, and they will pay for it. And - I doubt this is new... at all.
@AnonymousBlonde@xanga - THIS.
Who gives a shit? Doctors are people, too, and they are free to make the same choices in their lives as anyone else. When it becomes a problem is when docs start showing up drunk, hung over, high, or otherwise judgmentally impaired.
Also, what reports do you have that show an increase in use of drugs or alcohol? Any real data showing that at all other than unsubstantiated rumors and maybe an admission of one doctor or nurse?
Doctors of all kinds have been smoking for as long as there have been things to smoke. If a doc wants a cigarette, let them have one. If a doc wants a drink, then let them have one. It's not a difficult process to understand.
@AnonymousBlonde@xanga - nicely put!
Meh, their life, they can do with it what they please. If they wanna preach to other people that those things are bad for them and then do them at home...what the hell is the problem. Free will at it's best.i
It's always been known that professionals like doctors and lawyers are people who drink a lot alongside people in entertainment. Furthermore, doctors and dentists have more access to prescription drugs.
The disease of addiction affects everyone. Doesn't matter your profession, education, socio-economic status, race, etc....
hope not.
@godofthelost@xanga - exactly... "doctors are people too" and everyone has their habits/vices. in response to the original post i gotta say... nobody is perfect, get over it.
they're not supposed to be perfect. A lot of people know the side effects of alcohol and still drink too much and the same goes with pain killers and coffee....
I drink coffee and enjoy a beer now and then... and it's not to relieve stress....
And you don't have to be a doctor to know that smoking kills (my father knew it, kept on smoking with his heart desease and died... he probably knew all about it.... but died.
I saw a nurse smoking the other day. I found it funny. I know no one's perfect and everyone has their addiction, whatever it may be. But shouldn't they know better than to smoke? It's the precursor of almost every disease.
Hearing that it's to relieve stress sounds like a cop-out answer to me. They know the better ways to relieve stress. Shouldn't they be doing that rather than turning to drugs, alcohol, and/or smokes? But I guess everyone has their vice, and they probably developed those "habits" before they got into the profession. But still. Shouldn't they be setting the example? I have the same mindset when I see cops speeding down the street for no apparent reason.
I know dentists get high on their nitrogen, and doctors often write themselves scripts

It's not the fact that they're using drugs and alcohol to relieve stress, but just that they're completely disregarding other relieving methods that work as well, if not better.
As long as it's not illegal...
This is old news. Doctors and some health care workers addicted to drugs and booze is nothing new. They have a very high rate of dependency and addiction compared to other people. Being under constant pressure leads to some looking for a way out, just like the rest of us. This happens a lot. There are good doctors and good doctors that take drugs though. Take your pick.
