  • Getting Back in Shape: Week 1

I'm nearing my final semester at college, and between my senior thesis, the dog, and my girlfriend, exercise and diet unfortunately fall to the way side. Even I, the person who tells you to get off your butt to go run, need to listen to my own advice.

It was Monday when I decided to step on the scale, and I reeled in horror when I discovered that I had gained 12 pounds. In a month and a half, I had gained 1/16th my body weight.

So, me being me, I decided to go for a run immediately after I hopped off the scale. Even though I had just taken a shower, I got my sweaty shorts back on and stuffed my running shoes back on. I grabbed my iPod, and rushed outside to start my road work.

It felt good to be out on the road again, but after half a mile, my legs began to peter out, and after a few agonizing minutes, the burning feeling in my feet, thighs and calves started to be too much. I had only ran a fifth of what I was used to running, and it was disappointing and frustrating to have lost it.

So, for the sake of keeping track of my progress, I am going to blog about it. Every week, I am going to review what I did every day, and I am going to keep track of my weight. Note, my weight is dry weight, meaning no food and after a good sweat.

Monday - 172 lbs (ugh), ran 1.5 miles, exercise bike 20 mins.
Tuesday - 171 lbs, ran 2.0 miles, exercise bike 20 mins.
Wednesday - 172 lbs, 25 min exercise bike (no time to run)
Thursday - 170 lbs, 1.0 mile, exercise bike 15 mins, (morning). 2.0 miles, exercise bike 20 mins (night)

I am going to keep track of my workouts for you guys to see. Starting in June, I'm going to head back into the Muay Thai gym, so expect a post about that in the coming weeks.

Do you start exercising when you notice extra weight gain?  Are you planning to lose weight for the summer?

I exercise almost everyday to get myself energetic. I do it for at least 15-20 minutes in the morning to get me motivated and ready for the day. I think I'm already in shape for summer.

When I get in the zone, I am my own drill sergeant in the gym. But, school and work took over my life and I gained rediculous amounts of weight. Now I gotta drag my flabby butt out and get to work....

I've just begun working myself up to being able to jog a 5K. I've never been able to run before and I've decided it's time to get into good shape. Plus, I want to look smoking hot in a bikini! I walked/jogged 5 times this past week for about an hour each time. It's getting easier already! Keep it up and I'm sure you'll be back to your previous abilities in no time.

I exercise 4-6 days a week all year 'round.  What's the point of only being in shape for one season?

  • angel_face_89@xanga

Hell to the yeah I exercise when I see I've gained weight! Mostly just dancing in my room like no one's watching...or the old chasing the younger brother exercise! =)

Ps. its funny and refreshing to see guys care about weight too! ^____^

  • Pinkglitterangel@xanga

i exercise every night before going to bed

  • tastytimmm@xanga

I'm trying to gain weight lol Those two pounds you lost could just be fluctuations in water weight/food you've eaten during the day though... report back when you've consistently weighed in at 5 lbs less which will show actual progress. Keep up the good work.

when i see myself gaining weight, i'll stop exercising. when i see myself losing weight, i eat more. in the end, i'll still gain weight! what a life eh?

  • KrazyAMANDA@xanga

yes, i am planning on losing flab over the summer, because i have too many bad excuses to not be able to during the school year >.< unexciting school work is the bane of my existence :(

  • antimony_demon@xanga

Do you run intervals? Like job, sprint, jog, sprint? Much better for fat burning. ^^

  • Astella@xanga

i need to keep up too. thanks for the wake up call!

been busy and call, yes im at my final sem of my third yr in college too, along with working and personal commitments, i tend to be really busy or lazy or tired to exercise. i used to be a weekly jogger or swimmer but all these faltered away this month.

good thing is im probably too busy to eat so i hope that keeps the calories away!

  • LiquidityOfSelf@xanga

I work out almost every night...I'm trying to be more active during the day, along with eating less...that would make a big difference.

Definitely, ABSOLUTELY, need to shed some major pounds for the summer.

  • xkthily@xanga

I try to work out as much as I can during the school year, but when summer comes around, I'm in BEAST mode. lol I gained weight during my sophomore year so I'm in the process of working it off. I'm also keeping track of my progress on Xanga. Good luck to you! =)
