  • Ways To Help Kids Eat Better

ABC News today released 10 ways to help kids eat better. Here's a few of them that might apply to you or your family:
    • Watch what your kids drink

Sugary beverages can pack on the pounds, so replace soda and juice drinks with water or flavored seltzers. Drinking eight glasses of juice or soda -- which is not particularly uncommon -- can add 1,000 calories to your child's diet!

    • Skip super-sized portions

Despite what commercials feed them, kids really need kid-sized servings. Even too much of healthy foods can add up to more calories than they need.

    • Don't ban sweets entirely

Rather than prohibiting them completely, save indulgences such as ice-cream sundaes and potato chips for special occasions so your child doesn't feel deprived.

    • Don't make your child a member of the "clean-plate club"

Allow children to stop eating when they're full; should your children become hungry later, cut up an apple or unwrap a cheese stick.

    • Show love and acceptance toward your child despite his or her weight

Overweight children need support, approval and encouragement from their parents to feel secure and self-confident.

Some of them are obvious but the one that sticks out to me the most is the last one on this list, show love and acceptance.  I think that's one thing many parents forget to do.  They worry about their kids so much, they'l do anything to help them lose the weight while forgetting their still growing kids.

All of these are important but which one do you think is of utmost importance?

Kid size servings, thats exactly what I do. We all eat off smaller plates so that the amount we eat is fair and that it helps maintain a healthy weight for the whole family. I try to encourage healthy eating as much as possible. My son has a serious wheat allergy which is very bad so I am very careful.

Ugh the reason for my weight trouble when I was a younger teen (12, 13, 14) was the clean plate club. as a child, my parents would make me eat whatever was on my plate even if I went past the point of being full and almost getting sick. I would eat 2-3 plates of food when i was 12 and 13, not even truly being hungry but because i had that mentality of "I must eat, waste not want not" I continued eating.

Now I know that whatever food I don't eat can be saved as a leftover and that there will not be a food shortage in the near future. I can always eat something later if I get hungry.

Thanks for the information. Now, I know what I
will do with my child. Did you know that Clean Plate Clubs were part of a
campaign started by U.S. president Harry S. Truman that encouraged school
children to pledge to eat everything on their plate at mealtimes, in order to
conserve limited post-war resources. Although most nutritionists now discourage
this practice, these clubs were founded in a large number of elementary
schools, and were promoted on several children's television shows. So at least
now, we know what is to be done. I was thinking of buying a book about this.
But with this article, I was able to save a payday loan. Thanks.
