Monosodium Glutamate more commonly referred to as MSG has found its way into food
EVERYWHERE! I know we have all seen the signs "NO MSG" or "NO ADDED MSG" and to our knowledge they mean just that.
Well unfortunately they have just been adding other products that contain just as much MSG than what they were previously adding. So by doing this they can claim no MSG as it was not added directly. This is called "Clean Labeling" where they take MSG off of their ingredient label and add other products that contain just as much of it. I'm sure when most of you hear MSG you automatically think of Americanized Chinese Food establishments (Panda Express and such).
What a lot of people do not know is that MSG or MSG products are in just about every fast food restaurant (McDonalds, Burger King, KFC ) and most regular "sit-down" restaurants (Applebee's, TGI Friday's), and worst of all it is in our own homes! Once you finish reading this post go to the kitchen and look at some of your labels, it is quite shocking how many products actually contain it. They (Food Industry) knowingly put these products into our food, and once people became familiar with MSG and looking out for it on labels, they(Still the Food Industry) basically made other products out of MSG and renamed it, hoping we would not catch on.
Why is the food industry so keen on adding this to the food we eat? It is addicting! Yes, they put it in there so that we will eat more. Some scientists call it "Nicotine for food!" Only it does not cause cancer, no, it causes obesity. Have you ever wondered what they tested diet pills and supplements on? Just like everything else, rats and mice. Only there are no strain of mice or rats that are naturally obese, so what do they do? They inject them with MSG when they are very young which causes them to become obese. That way they can see if their diet products actually works. Now if MSG has that effect on rats what do you think it does to humans? Not only is it addicting but it also triples the amount of insulin the pancreas makes which is what cause the rats to become obese. Maybe it has the same effect for humans.
I, for one am trying to avoid MSG and products containing it and I thought that blogging about it would be a great way to share it everyone. I still find it hard to completely eliminate this from my diet due to how many products it is in and how wide spread it has become. I try to find ways such as, eliminate processed foods completely, eat mainly raw vegetables, try cooking more at home(well my girlfriend cooks for me

) using products that do not contain MSG.
There is so much more information out there for MSG if people would just do a little research, like the "low calorie" and "sugar free" drinks and a lot of supposedly healthy food/drinks we intake contain MSG or MSG type product. Some of the health risks involved with consuming this stuff is quite shocking. A lot of products that are targeted towards kids contains these things and affect kids way more severely than adults.
Do you look for restaurants that say no MSG on the window? How many of your foods contain MSG or some form of it?
*I am not actually addicted to LSD nor am I addicted to MSG, This title is there to grab readers attentions, I was in no way trying to offend people who eat MSG or anyone who has an addiction or does drugs. This blog was written by me for informative purposes only. Thank You *

MSG is really just a combination of salt and sugar. Its gonna be every where regardless.
haha, I love how you had to add that little footnote down there.
people these days...
NO, I AM SO OFFENDED. I ACTUALLY HAVE AN ADDICTION TO MSG, YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT FEELS LIKE. DON'T JUST THROW STUFF AROUND LIKE THAT 'CAUSE I ACTUALLY HAVE A PROBLEM. AUGH. *angry pout*
thanks for subscribing to me. hope i don't depress you too much.LOL
great post....very informative.I eat foods with MSG and I'm not addicted. (Jack in the Box tacos have a LOT. XD) I can understand why others would get to addicted though. It gives my dad headaches.
i dont eat out much so i guess that lowers my risk of consuming MSG in large amounts right there...and everything else I eat is fresh and not pre packaged...
fresh fish poultry beef....veggies fruit etc
The first time I learned what MSG was, it was when I had kimchi that contained it. I ate a little too fast and moments later I had a terrible headache. My dad told me it might have been caused by MSG.
i have an asian grandmother that is an amazing cook but shes addicted to the use of msg.
no way of avoiding it there :D
also alot of traditional asian food is totally laced with that stuff. lol
MSG *drools*
Yet another reason to avoid fast food.
It's used to improve and enhance foods, of course it's going to be in absolutely everything. It makes things taste better. I don't know whether they actually set out to fatten people up or not (I have no proof of that, it kind of sounds like a conspiracy theory to me.) but they do set out to make their products taste good, so more people buy them.
MSG actually occurs naturally in things like soybeans.
I don't think MSG is all that harmful if it's not eaten too much. There's really no way to know how much MSG is in whatever we're eating, though. It's not like they'll put "MSG: 20%" on there.
I figure I eat a ton of it though. I don't eat fast food but I do eat frozen junk. Eh.
I am incredibly allergic to MSG, so I avoid all products with it at all costs.... I have to check labels.... really, it isn't good for someone to consume, so I'm so much healthier because of it.
But what exactly is Monosodium Glutamate? Is it natural or manmade? Is it a chemical? What effects does it have besides weight gain? I have seen signs about this or that food not containing it but I have never really understood what is is. I know it enhances flavour but what exactly does it consist of? What other names does MSG appear under on labels?
I try to avoid MSG. But let me tell you, it's almost impossible to avoid it completely. I used to go to these Chinese restaurants and man, that food is soooo good, but it messed me up..big time. I have a joke with the people I went with, but it explains more than you'd like to know. I sure got the runs for my money. Haha.
I love MSG. People are under the misconception that only Chinese food has MSG, but if you look around in the grocery store, LOTS of stuff has MSG in it. Almost every bag of chips in the chip aisle has MSG. Canned soups have MSG (except that new Campbell's line that has no taste). All of those packages of seasoning or seasoning mix have MSG. You'd be surprised if you actually look at any product that has already been seasoned because they almost always have MSG. Oh, Hamburger Helper has MSG... AND MANY MORE...
@lovechartreuse@xanga - A combination of salt and sugar??? can you do some research on what you know before you speak?
"Three spring rolls please."
MSG'd!
@lovechartreuse@xanga - Monosodium Glutamate. . . not really. Sodium and salt arent the same thing. And "glutamate" isn't sugar.
@HowShouldOneDefineThemselves@xanga - Oh really? What's in salt then? And just for the record most things that start with "glu" tend to be sugar.
Then what is MSG made out of?
@sqp611@xanga - Can you?
