  • Importance of Appropriate Eating before a Workout - A Lesson Well Learned

Everyone knows exams is a time for stressing and studying, not to mention all nighters, I wrote my English exam on Friday with bags under my eyes and with people commenting on how I looked like a zombie.

Anyways so after my English exam I went home and literally crashed after eating lunch. I didn't get up till 5:40pm and I just had to rush b/c mom wanted me home for dinner (and not too late) from my run. I was really stupid. I just drank a ton of water and grabbed an apple as a snack, about 30 min later I was out the door.

I forgot that usually when I don't have time for my food to fully digest before I run the food just sits in my stomach, in the acid, where it makes me feel like crap. I basically haven't eaten all that much during the day (apple + yogurt for breakfast b/c I was too nervous to eat| 8chicken wings + tiny bit of rice for lunch, too tired to eat) so I didn't have enough calories much less carbs for my run - keep in mind it was supposed to be a 19k run.

That run on Friday was one of the worst runs I had ever done, around 8k I was starving but I keep pushing b/c I needed to do at least one long run a week and I do them on Fridays. I think when I hit 13k my muscles started to become ridge - this never happens to me unless I do a double run of a speed work out then longer run. It felt horrible, I could barely move. I kept pushing till I hit 16k, after that I just couldn't run anymore, I had to walk the last 1/2k home. It was embarrassing not to mention just heartbreaking b/c that was one of the worst runs of my life. I actually had to stop in the middle to stretch a few times - 16k = 1:19:23. The last time I did a 16k I did it in 1:17:23. So I guess I learned the importance of fueling before a run. I will never ever try to do a long run on such low levels of carbs + calories.

Ever go running or working out without much in your stomach?  How did you feel?  Were you able to finish your exercise?

    i don't like eating before i workout.

    :)

    i dont know why...

  • DreamWeaver09@xanga

If it's in the morning I'll eat a small breakfast, otherwise I'll be starving

But if I go in the afternoon I don't like eating before I exercise, it makes me think I have to burn off that food I just ate

  • InTheThin@xanga

I don't really like eating too much anyways, so I almost always feel really drained of energy, like I want to move, but there's nothing in me to fuel that.

Then again, if I eat a ton before eating I just feel like a cow attempting to sprint, literally.

  • misstequila@xanga

I usually have to becarefull because of early stages of acid reflux and so the combination of my food to be sitting around while i work out is horrible...bile i tell ya...

16k?????? that is such a long distance to run on just an apple! if i had to run that much, i'd eat a pound of spaghetti beforehand. too bad i can't run that much in the first place... you must be so fit!

if i'm doing serious exercise, like running, i'll have to eat then wait a long time before i run. if i'm just doing pilates or light muscle building, i don't need to eat. however, that is unhealthy. my wii fit told me that!

Eating and working out fall into two distinct categories- endurance and fat loss. COMPLETELY different eating is required for both.

Fat-loss: really, you shouldn't eat in the 2-3 hours prior to a workout- if you can workout in the morning after having a protein rich, minimum carb dinner- brilliant!

Endurance: You need to carb up. But not right before. You want ot have a nice stash of energy is your blood and liver. So having a pasta dish the night before a big run then juts having a very light meal sometime before the run and you should feel good. Smash your body full of carbs just before and you are just making it that much harder when your body makes the energy switch, plus, nothing will digest. It'll just sit there waiting to be thrown up when your body wants to convince you tow stop.

haha i'm just quoting my trainer. I'm still at fat loss, and even a 7km run does not require me to carb-load. But yeah. thats my general take on the issue :)

  • JoeytheGenie@xanga

@aalyceh@xanga - In regards to the "endurance category" my coach tends to say there is no need to carb load unless you're running a race (10k+) for that you should carb load 2-3 days before. Other than races, runs above 20k+ need carb loading but not by much. He also recommands that we eat 2-3h before hitting the roads.
The 2-3h rule works for me:). Before I race anything or even go out for a run I usually have to eat. As I stated in my post, not doing the 2-3h thing killed my run.

btw, time for 7k? I don't know why but I always wonder about other people's times....call it a habit

  • aalyceh@xanga

@JoeytheGenie@xanga - wow you really know your running! i'm trying to build up to 21km race- prolly a year out as i have never, ever run before! i'm rather slow i'm afraid, if i average 6-7mins per km i'm happy. I'm doing my first race race ie i have anklet timer etc in august, if i can finish anywhere between 35-40mins i'll be happy.

I only know anything about enduro bc my trainer is an enduro trainer really, but works with us fatties on a day-to-day basis lol. he chats to keep my mind off the dreaded stairs!

Some of us are having work out as a habit. Before doing such activity, eating properly is the first thing to consider. Choosing a right food to eat is vital as well. Sushi food is one kind of food that is low in fat and nutritious food. If you haven’t heard it, sushi means vinegared rice.June 18th was purported as being NationalSushi Day, even though no one had ever heard of it before. It seems to be one of those internet holidays, made up by marketing departments to get people to buy stuff – it's not as if that isn't a distinct possibility. Most people who have written about it so far have all pointed out that they had never heard of National Sushi Day, and that it is probably spurious. At any rate, those who go for it might file into Japanese restaurants and get in on celebrating the suspicious National Sushi Day.

About Appetite Suppressors to Help Reduce Weight

Appetite suppressors can be a help during a slimming process. On the
market of today you can find both appetite suppressors related to the
substance amphetamine and appetite reducers of herbal origin. Appetite
suppressors are generally recommended to use together with a diet
program and exercise, and only for a limited time period. They are
never recommended to use as the only means of achieving a reduced
    weight.

whenever i go to martial arts class i always have to choose wisely what i eat!i usually have cereal/toast for breakfast, some more carbs for dinner + drink plenty of waterthen for dinner before i go to class (usually the class is like 7pm/6.30pm) I have chicken and pasta but not a really heavy dinner because if not i totally get what you experienced!
i never realised how much nutrition was important to workouts until i did a 3 hour class and only had a cereal bar and 3 energy drinks. this made me so ill due to the caffeine and adrenaline but i had no proper fuel in my body. usually best to drink loads of water to keep hydrated and carb foods to work off such as pasta and non-greasy foods!
sometimes, like many of you i dont like to eat before workouts although i'm usually pressured to by parents! I usually eat something when i get home to refuel (: jumping kicks aren't good to do on a full stomach!

i like running in the morning on an empty stomach, because i get side stitches really easily. if i can't run in the morning, i do around 5-6pm. i can not run that late in the day if i have had oily bad-for-you foods, because they make my stomach rebel against me.

something like almonds, though, is great before a run.

When I'm hungry before working out, it's really hard to finish a workout because I keep thinking about how starved I am.

But in the mornings I usually just have yogurt with granola just to have something in my stomach before I start my workout.

  • methodElevated@xanga

I once only ate a bowl of cereal in the morning, and then didn't eat for the rest of the afternoon.  I went to the gym at about 2 pm, ran 3 miles, lifted some weights, and then got really dizzy and passed out.  It was actually quite frightening; no one else was around and I was in a panic thinking I'd have to go to the hospital.  Thankfully, after about 10 minutes, the weakness and dizziness faded and I was able to walk home.

I have always made sure to eat before a workout because I do not function well on an empty stomach (mind or body), but I must've forgotten that day.
  • xiomay@xanga

yes i think u need to eat something with carbs in it before u work out, i vomited while i worked out with empty stomach :)

  • LaBellaMorena@datingish

I went to the gym for a kickboxing class one morning without eating anything, and I nearly passed out. I got really dizzy and I had to sit out for about 10 minutes before I could go back inside. I was probably also dehydrated, which didn't really help. I definitely try to make sure I eat something before my workouts now.

  • coLt15150@xanga

at my school, the dining hall is not open 24/7 - we have specifc hours - so i went to the gym one morning without eating anything and barely drinking. i had just started consecutively working out a month or two before that morning, so i only did about twenty minutes on the elliptical. however, that morning, i was barely able to make it to ten minutes. when i got off the elliptical, white dots blurred my vision, and according to the athletic director, i had turn starch white (and i'm normally a pale person, so that fact that i became paler says something). i almost passed out; now, no matter what, i always have a little something before i work out - i'll never exercise on an empty stomach again, but if i have a big meal, i'll wait a little bit - you don't want to be full and then run a mile - you just need to find your own happy medium :)

  • JoeytheGenie@xanga

@aalyceh@xanga - im building up to 21k as of this moment (got 2 more k to go to hit the cap); training for a half and i love it.
keep up the running, and 6-7 min ks are good. when i first started running i was way slower than that - that was in sept 2008, as in last sept
so get ready for lots of improvement

  • chickrunnerxx@xanga

I once did my 3k XC race without eating anything or drinking more than about 4oz. Needless to say, I passed out while hitting the finish line and stayed in a half-consious state of mind for a little over an hour. I was so out of it that I texted all my friends telling them I was dying. Heat + Dehydration + No food + The hardest XC course we run = dumbest thing you could do to your body.
