  • Learning Portion Control From A Broken Bowl

Last week, while trying to have a quick breakfast, my favorite cereal bowl fell out of my hand and smashed into pieces.  I was angry at myself for not holding onto the bowl tighter but even more for having to clean up the mess and running late. After cleaning up the shards, I quickly grabbed another bowl from the cupboard a much smaller one, had my Honey Nut Cheerios and left the apartment.

On my way to the train, I actually thought about the bowl.  I've had that bowl since I left for college 5 years ago. My GF at the time bought me the bowl when she visited me in school.  The bowl was a pretty big ceramic bowl.

Since then, I've been eating cereal in my smaller, seemingly miniature size bowl.  But it's actually been much better for me.  The smaller bowl allows for portion control.  With my bigger bowl, I was eating cereal like Jason Segel does in Forgetting Sarah Marshall when he's at home. Although my bowl wasn't as big, I ate a lot of cereal in the morning.

The new bowl still fills me up but doesn't make me feel full (is that making any sense?).  I don't feel like throwing up when I run to the train station like I do after eating in the big bowl (maybe it's cuz it was given to by an ex, who knows).

As much as I hated to see my favorite bowl crash to pieces, I'm actually glad that it did.  I just might eat all my other foods in my new bowl so I don't over eat.  Chicken and rice, veges, here I come!

How big is your cereal bowl?  Do you think having smaller plates/bowls makes you have better portion control?

My cereal bowl is pretty small. I don't really eat breakfast though, I don't eat it on weekdays since I'm always leaving before 7:30 and I get nauseous if I eat anything that early. I usually eat on the weekends at around 11 or 11:30

What a great post! :) I have amazing ceramic bowls, but I hardly ever eat out of them because they're almost triple a normal sized portion.  I have smaller bowls that are actually kid-sized (they're made by Crayola) and I eat much better portions out of them.

Yeah, there is actually a lot of science behind this. Smaller bowls and plates trick the brain into thinking it's getting more food than it really is.

My cereal bowl at home is normal but my one at school is massive. haha... I know what you mean about portion control. Nice post.
