  • Mice Eat More Than I Do When I Menstruate!

Pardon me if I'm a bit graphic in my post and description.

Tonight I noticed a Healthkicker post titled "Eating Like A Horse Around That Time of Month" or something of the like. I didn't read it, but here's my reply: YEAH, RIGHT! When it's time for my dreaded female happenings, my uterus declares WAR on my belly and intestines. WAR, DO YOU HEAR ME?!

First I get a bit of bloating-----if you were to poke me directly in the stomach, I'd squirm away or go, "Nooooooo, not there!" Next thing I know, my period actually starts. I'm gassy, or a bit constipated, or making more bowel movements than usual for the first 3 days, but it doesn't last during the whole 6 day run, thank goodness.

Due to this monthly battle, my uterus usually wins and I don't or can't eat much in one sitting. If I try, it usually feels like I may vomit.

Do any of you girls get the same symptoms? Would you say your food intake increases or decreases when you're on your period?

Wow, that's quite a title for a post... I've never really noticed a change in my appetite when I'm on my period. I feel like some people just use their period as an excuse to eat more.

  • xdiexthinx@xanga

gee, i wish i had that problem. my period might make me crave sugar a little more than normal, but thats it.

  • mystupidweight@xanga

I don't eat very much when I'm on my period either.

  • sWiMpRiNcEsS@xanga

i get bloated and funky in the stomach area like u do, but it doesnt make my eating patterns any different

  • PenaltyLife@xanga

wow, the only thing i can relate to is the feeling of constipation. i normally eat more because cramps bother me more on an empty stomach.

  • fried_ryce@xanga

nope. I don't ever cramp up when I'm menstruating. I DO eat a lot more though...

I get a lot of the cramping and the extra bowel movements as you put it.  I end up craving more food right before I get my period.  When I have it, I don't know that I eat a lot more, but I crave really unhealthy foods.

  • d0llh0use@xanga

definitely decreases.  even if i do eat something i go to the bathroom right after plus i get cramps but its gotten better now without the use of midol anymore.  i find tying a jacket around the waist really tight helps the cramps, it doesnt hurt as much.  drinking lukewarm water helps too.

sometimes. it varies. since i've been on birth control, i pig out at that time. however, when i wasnt on it, war was declared as well, and i would barely eat anything. my body didnt want anything and i would get grossed out by food.
not the same as you described, but i still feel ya there

  • CrazyswtCHERries@xanga

I barely eat. I think by the end of the week I'm 5 pounds lighter.

  • hopeful_mrs_lysacek@xanga

it's crazy!  sometimes i can't bring myself to eat, sometimes i want to eat EVERYTHING.  unfortunately, it's usually the latter.  but i'll say this--ALWAYS some kind of stomach woe, be it diarrhea or constipation.

    stupid periods

  • Manstration@xanga

I eat more, cry more, scream more, yell more. All of my regular bitchy behaviors are amplified.

  • black_lie@xanga

i vary between wanting to eat nothing and wanting to shove my face full of everything i can reach lol

  • xSayakax@xanga

Mine is unpredictable.  Sometimes for the first 2-3 days, I'm in so much pain, I have to sleep fetal position for it to feel somewhat better.  And I would have no appetite and have easier bowel movement for a few days (which isn't so bad).  Other times, it's not so torturing, which feels less annoying.

My acupuncturist told me this to drink hot tea/warm drinks.  Do not drink/eat anything cold like iced-drinks or ice cream.  I find warm things like soup and tea to be very soothing toward my stomach pain.  Hope this will help you too!

  • xSayakax@xanga

Oh...I also avoid dairy products b/c for some reason, it makes my pain a lot worse.

  • pillowpixies@xanga

I know that for the first half of mine, I have the worst cramps on the face of the earth. So unless I take something for those to get them to stop, I'll eat hardly anything.

  • CrazySwede@xanga

Everything the OP is describing sounds just like me.

  • XeverybodyXduckX@xanga

I only wish I had that problem.
My stomach becomes a bottomless pit. I crave everything. I eat until I'm well past full and then want more.

  • heyjanety@xanga

have you been checked for endometriosis? sometimes, endometriosis can affect your bowels during menstruation. you should definitely mention your symptoms to your obgyn.

  • xueyo@xanga

i thought i was the only one who shits more before my period by a few days. found out, i'm not alone haha. i also get short-tempered easily and i feel like urinating more during and a few days before too.

the comment from heyjanety is scaring me now.

  • Peachass@xanga

that sounds awful! you should probably see your doctor.
i get the same with the digestion issues, but not as bad and usually I am very hungry, but then i have bathroom issues like u said with constipation or diahrea or something and horrible cramps.

  • AniDiaz0@xanga

I usually crave more food about a week before my period. But, just as you described, I'm the same way once my period actually starts. My bowels go crazy!

  • highxtops@xanga

Yea I crave the stereotypical chocolate :), but other than that, I'm in too much pain to care about eating. I've passed out from cramps that hurt so much (Anyone have any ways I can help ease the pain besides midol and birth control?)

  • shes_lump@xanga

I crave sweets before and during my period... especially chocolate (of course!) but I don't eat "like a horse" or more than I normally do. In fact, I probably eat a little less. Because, like you, I get really bad cramps and have thrown up. ick.

  • snowvampire@xanga

I never eat a lot of my disease (aka period).  I'm fat enough as it is and it doesn't help that I get bloated which makes me look (to my eyes) even more fat. My husband bought me an excercise bike to use in the home to trim myself down and it helps a little. I can't do ANYTHING on my disease. Can't eat, can't sleep, don't like walking around because of the blood gushing, hate sneezing because the blood flows really quickly, and the pain just hurts but I deal with it. I don't take medication for my menstrual cramps.  I get headaches, bloating, stomach cramps, lower back pains, fatigue, loss of appitite, depression, and rib pain when I'm on mine.
