  • Does spinning make your legs bulky?

Does spinning make your thighs big?

I’ve been a gym rat for a number of years now, but basically have been committed to the same old cardio rotation every morning—the treadmill and the stairmaster—since they are the only routines that make me sweat. I’ve tried to vary my workouts and have been to a couple of yoga and pilates classes before, but got bored of them quickly. They were just too “slow” for me. I know a lot of people are obsessed with yoga and pilates these days, but I needed something that would make me sweat. Without breaking a sweat, I don’t feel like I’m really working out.

Thanks to my friend I finally found a way to rev up my cardio routine—a spin class. My friend has recently tried a spinning class at her gym and was telling me how awesome it is. Fortunately, my gym has spinning classes twice a week starting at 6:45 a.m. I’ve actually joined it this week and absolutely loved it! The music was totally upbeat, the instructor was energetic, and most of all, the 45-minute class made me sweat like crazy!

After my first class, I’ve been going around and telling my family and friend how a spin class is a “must”. But one of my friends told me that too much peddling can make your thighs bulky and she even showed me pictures of women cyclists with really big muscley thighs. Spinning is definitely “the workout” for me, but I really don’t want huge thighs.

Have you tried spinning classes before? Do you think they make your thighs bulky?

You won't get bulky thighs just from spinning. To bulk up, these women with huge thighs would have to be taking protein and other supplements to ADD muscle mass. Women don't bulk up like men do, unless they go against nature and do it with supplements and high protein and stuff. They even say that about weight training! Most women avoid weight training because they don't want to bulk up, but the truth of the matter is that lifting HEAVY weights, women will just tone faster, not develop huge muscles like men. Stop worrying and have fun! I love spin classes!

You have control over that. As far as I know, if you don't turn the intensity up too much it shouldnt happen. I don't go THAT much but I go to them at least once a week and started a few wks ago aside from some other exercise, I've done nothing but lose weight. Muscle grows gradually so if you see something happening I'm sure you'll be able to stop it before it becomes anything near massive.

It won't make you bulky.  Cycling alone isn't enough.

But really, why not have large leg muscles?  I never understood why that's a bad thing.

I've been spinning on and off for 3 years, and I never noticed my thighs bulking up!  You should try cardio kickboxing, a great workout (not slow like yoga or pilates, and really fun once you get over feeling silly (if it's your first time).

so what? i have big legs from swimming and i love them. my bf has big legs from biking and i love them too. big legs are sexy.

  • likenvrbefore@xanga

my quads are huge, but they don't look fat at all (i don't do a spinning class but i bike for long periods of time in a verrrry hilly area). and since it makes your ass firm and muscular too, they still look proportional to your body (mine, anyway).

so basically, no, you will never have the legs of a 90 lb girl if you do spinning classes. but your legs will be sexy.

**by huge, i mean relatively. i'm a healthy 115lb 5'5 girl and you can tell i work out, but i don't look like i do triathalons.

ain't nothing wrong with some thunder thighs!!!

but my mom likes to take cycling classes (like 2-3 times a week) and her legs are definitely not bulky. It depends on your diet and how much protein intake you have. It also depends on cycle intensity... like if you're really tearing up those muscle fibers and consuming a lot of protein for repair and growth.

you won't get bulky unless you were doing it 4+ hours a day, every day.

Seriously, what's wrong with being muscular? Being fit and athletic is attractive. I really don't understand the female fear of "muscles."

You don't want fat thighs, you want BUILT thighs. And -those- are sexy as shit. Don't worry about it, I'd kill for "bulky" thighs!

I have a slim legs and I wanted it to be bulky. can I use this spinning classes? thanks.

  • queenmz@xanga

ew yuck yes. they do. only looks good if you got long as legs to lengthen it out. if you're short its just stubby. happens with running too..

  • mercurychan@xanga

I only noticed myself bulking up once I started drinking protein shakes. We cut down the amount of protein powder and that stopped fairly quick.  I cycle, run, weight train and so forth a lot now and I'm more tone than anything

my sister has been doing spinning religiously for years and she's got the skinniest legs in the world...and she started taking the classes when she used to be overweight.

I think it depends on your body type though - almost any exercise bulks up my thighs,..but since they're always big, I'd rather have big, strong thighs than still big, flabby ones. :P

  • jazziegal97@xanga

i doubt it, you'd have to change other factors in your diet and exercise routine for that to happen. Spinning alone won't do that, it will however burn more calories than just walking.

I don't know about spinning, but I've been jogging & doing high impact aerobics for over six months. At first my calves got a bit smaller but I could just about swear they've gotten bigger, yet no other part of me did (so it wasn't a weight gain)
But I wouldn't really think that would cause them to get noticeably muscular--maybe toned. Then again, I'm not an expert in that field.
