Diet Help On Fourth Of July
How do I keep to my diet on 4th of July while actually enjoying myself? The foods that will be served at out party (and no, my parents aren't making a special meal for me) include hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, cake, chips, fruit, beans, basically your typical array of food.
So what can I do to not over-indulge on 4th of July? Any tips? What are you doing to prevent overeating during the holiday weekend?

bring your own food to grill (have them throw on a turkey hotdog (70 calories)). just avoid the sides unless they are fruits and veggies.
Snack on fruits and grilled veggies?
My husband and I are working on this problem, too. We've decided to go with turkey burgers and no buns (or half a whole wheat bun), just ONE serving of baked Lays, and some fruit. My advice? Don't deprive yourself completely, just get small proportions of food and don't do seconds. It's worth it, and the fourth is all about barbeque! A way to not overindulge is to get your food, eat it slowly so it will fill you, either throw your plate away/put in in the sink afterwards, and sit away from the table when you're done.
Well, I stayed away from the chips and basically over salty snacks like chips.
I only limit myself to ONE cupcake, or pastry.
I do eat like how I would regularly because I don't really feel the need to overindulge just because of a cookout. However, what we did last year was because we have a huge yard behind, instead of sitting around, a few of us actually played a few rounds of softball. It definitely helped beating food coma too : )
Well dessert is going to be my cheat of the week, and my question is more what foods (that we're having) should I eat, not what foods we should cook since the menu is pretty much set in stone.
can you get a turkey burger to be grilled? eat fruit salad, corn on the cob with no butter/salt, a little baked beans won't kill you... and a s'more = only 165 cals.
@shes_lump@xanga - HA 165?!
Use a small plate, take smaller portions, and don't go back for seconds or thirds!!
maybe avoid putting too much food on the plate all at once. and enjoy the food slowly!
have a small salad and some fruit before the hamburgers/hot dogs/etc are served. They will fill you up so you will have the desire to eat less. Also drink plenty of water and just keep in mind 'moderation'. Also choosing a smaller sized plate to avoid large portions could help as well.
i would suggest having some burger (skip the cheese) on bun---i'd pass on the potato salad completely, and whatever sides you eat besides that, fill your plate up with more veggies and fruit. what's going to be on the menu exactly? maybe we can be more help then. fruit salad and corn on the cob is a definite go. mmm. especially watermelon.
i'm kind of in your situation. except for four days. i'm going camping with my sister's boyfriend's family and although we'll be doing healthy physical activities, i have no idea how they eat. i don't know how to tell them i don't support fast food or that i try to avoid red meat. so i won't. i get where you're coming from, not trying to change the menu. you don't want to be a bother if not everyone understands your dietary needs or has already planned the menu! so i'm bringing some healthy snacks on the trip in case i pass on a good amount of the food. good luck! but enjoy yourself too.
@zinda@xanga - Thanks for the advice, we're having Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Corn on the Cob, Fruit, Chili, Potatoe Salad, Chips, and then cake for dessert.
I've always found that it works for me to have a cheat day. Enjoy yourself. You can eat junky food every once in a while without blowing your whole weight loss thing. Just eat normal portion sized and don't stuff yourself, but if you want a hot dog and cake, eat a hot dog and cake. Just don't bring your holiday eating to the next day, and remember not to just eat something because it's there. Just eat what you need to satisfy your hunger. Making a big deal out of everything you put in your mouth will keep you from having fun.
if the burger is made with really lean meat then it shouldn't have more cals than a regular meal.
go for a hamburger or hot dog, and some fruit. then decide what you wanna "indulge" on. cake? chips? cake AND chips? indulge, but don't go over the top. 1 serving of chips is 140 cals, and a normal slice of cake could be anywhere between 200 and 800 calories, depending on how big the slice is and how fattening the cake is.
my cookout is today. i rode my bike and the morning and had a 349 calorie breakfast. i plan on eating ~1200 more calories--a small lunch, some snacks at the cookout, a decent dinner, and dessert. it all adds up to 1550, which is the amount of calories i usually eat! plus i'm going to the gym for a bit.
my point is is that you can indulge and still stay within a reasonable calorie limit. if you want to really indulge, then eat 500 more cals than you usually would. then just eat 250 less cals and burn 250 extra cals in the upcoming days. no damage done!
@Btrfly_Wngs@xanga - great advice! that's what i do too :)
also, drink ALOT of water. that way you won't be as hungry oh, and stay away from the potato salad!!!!
Eat what you'd like in small portions.
Drinking water before a meal helps as well. x
just do't not eat more than your fair share
diet food
@GrassUnderMyFeet@xanga - hmm...again, this is all up to you and what you prefer. but i would choose one item to indulge in---you know, the hot dog or the hamburger---in my dinner. or a little chili (that can fill you up so you won't OVERindulge on the sweets). then pile on the fruit and corn! enjoy those sweet things as much as dessert then actually go for a serving of dessert or you'll regret it! but don't sweat it and just enjoy the atmosphere =) you're doing great just mentally preparing and setting a goal.
sorry if i seem overly specific. that's just what i'd feel comfortable with. just whatever you choose, remember moderation is key and very filling.hmm... i'm freaked out too. my 2 closest friends love to eat (so do i, but let's pretend that's really not true!) and the pressure's gonna be on, just like any other day of the yr!!! anyway, i'm thinking of loading up vegetables so it seems like i'm constantly eating but i'm really not... cuz w/ green tea pills and sugarfree red bull, it's bound to negate those cals. :)
Eat some grilled chicken if available and if not and you really don't want to touch any of the goods - eat before you go and just have one beer and then from there seltzer.
just enjoy yourself and eat whatever you want you can work it off later. god you paranoid people
Fill up half of your plate with fruit and only eat 1 hamburger and 1 hot dog. That way you can limit your "bad" food while still getting your fruites (maybe even bring a side salad, it'll be easy to toss up and takes more room on your plate so you have less chips and potatoe salad. You said the menu is in stone, but a "harmless" looking iceburg salad shouldn't offend anyone, especially if you make enough to share).
And if you do blow it and eat a whole bunch of crap. Get up early tomorrw and go jogging and be extra good tomorrow. Whatever you do, don't feel bad if you think you eat too much. That can just lead you to making more bad choices. The key is having fun and trying to limit portions, and if you eat too much, it'll be okay, tomorrow's a new day.
