(Calorie counts on restaurant menus-GET DOWN!)
Well healthkickers, our time has come to take our diet under control. In a few months, if you live in California, you'll probably notice something a little different in menus across the state. Calorie counts, carb counts, sodium counts on everything from steaks and hamburgers, to salads and soups.
"The new bill will require restaurants in California with 20 or more locations to provide brochures with nutritional information by July 1, 2009. By Jan. 1, 2011, restaurants will need to post calories on their menus and menu boards for all to behold." - LA times.
I love this new law. I hate to admit it, and I'm sure it's a real pain in the ass, but when you take into account how much we spend eating out, and how little we know about what we eat (i.e. amounts of sugar in savory items), it would be nice to see what we are doing.
But to drive it home, here's Arnold with a golden quote:
"In the last decade Californians have gained 360 million pounds. Think about that for a little bit. Now, when I was in the Austrian Army I drove a tank that weighed 50 tons. Now multiply that by 3,500. That's as many pounds as Californians have gained. That's huge." - The Governator.
You gotta love the weight loss and tanks metaphor. Obesity while being bad ass. That's what we call "staying on message."
What do you think of this new law? Do you think it will work?

I think it would make a slight change and make people more aware of what they are putting into their bodies. But I don't expect a dramatic change.
woah that's a lot of........weight. o_o
I think NY has a law like this..right?
thts weirdo
All I can say is YAYY!
Hahah even though I don't live in Cali I think that's fantastic. Every state should pass it. People that want to, would be able to make healthier choices :D Then again, for every person willing to make a healthier decision there's 3 or 4 that couldn't care less and will eat whatever the hell they want anyways.
A little, hopefully. =)
@fried_ryce@xanga - Yeah, we do lol.
lucky ppl in cali
I live in Southern Cal. and today I went to IHOP for brunch and believe it or not there was a separate brochere inside the menu that had all the nutritional facts. Thankfully my friend and I were able to choose low calorie meals. I was shocked that most of the dishes there were 900~1100 calories per plate! isn't that shocking?
I don't think it will change anything. I know allot of people who are aware of the contents of what they put into their bodies. From resturaunts, and still don't care.
Those lucky Californians!
I have to check online & on some local places they don't show it.
I think it will work with some people who weren't exactly aware of the info. But I think some other people might say "I don't care. I want the food"
Also, if all states pass this law, maybe the restaurants will resort to making the foods healthier. (Or at least less fattening.)

i was born in California, and am going back there for college. I don't think that people will mind the calories as much. a lot of people do still eat at McDonalds even if they list the calories.
It can be nice. mac donalds and other fast food restaurant do this, and they don't have less customers (and people d'ont really care about that most of the time...).
I might be happy if they decided todo this in France, but I know they won't !
this made my day
I live in CA, and I LOVE THIS NEW LAW (:
and I think it will work (at least for people who care what they consume), because when you don't know how many calories or other stuff something has, you can optimistically assume that it has less than it actually does, so you eat it anyways. but when you see the amount in front of you, you can't pretend it's not there.
I don't know. It'll help the few people who only need numbers shoved in their face, I guess.
LOL! i thought thats wot they did anyway..?
we pretty much have this already in england, especially on restaurant websites and in the actual restaurant itself =)
I go to college in CA, and I think this is a good law. I believe it is a bit cumbersome on restaurants, but if they have 20+ locations they probably have the resources and time to figure out the calorie content of their foods. I doubt that we'll see a dramatic weight loss though.
it may benefit some people who want to know more about what they are eating, but i think that if ppl still want to eat unhealthy food, it's not that much of a deterrent.
@mystupidweight@xanga - HAHAHA second that
I don't think so.
bring it to missouri!
Even if it effects one person then it has worked. At least now when someone is 500 pounds and cant get off their couch anymore they cant say I didnt know that food was so bad for me. Im not the biggest fan of the Govenor but I am a fan of this new law!
finally.
Oh our Governator is so funny... XD
