Low carb diets work by limiting the amounts of ready-to-use energy in your body. The less energy rich foods you take in, the more fat (and protein) have to be used.
IT SUCKS. People need carbs for a reason. It's only day two, and I feel like I just got over a really bad flu. It takes me a few seconds to lift myself out of my chair, talking becomes a chore, and god forbid, if I have to wash my dishes, I'm going to just pass out.
Low carb diets hurt. Sure you lose the weight, but it's not worth it. You never ever feel good when you're doing it, and the kicker is when you're done with the diet, you GAIN all that weight back. Trust me on this.
If you want to lose weight, just exercise more then you already do. Get tired, eat less, drink more water. Weight loss is simple, honest, hard work, there's no need to try and go around it.
Unless you have to drop 10 lbs in two weeks.
Ever try a low carb diet? Did you need to lose weight for something you tried to do it for long term health reasons?

I tried a low carb diet. You're right, the first week is hell. You feel very sluggish. Tired. Hard to keep focus. But by week 2 my body adapted. I actually ended up feeling better, peppier, and happier (but the happyness may have just been a result of the weight loss lol)
I ended up losing 20lbs in 3weeks changing only my diet. I increased my exercise, and resumed a more "normal" healthy diet now, and have maintained the weight for 4months now since I started.
I've been on a low carb diet now for a little over a month, after about day 4 is when I start to feel better. First few days SUCK, I'm right there with you on that. But I have celiac disease (allergic to wheat gluten), and this diet just cuts out all the guess-work. I feel a million times better than I did before I started and I've lost 13.5 lbs to boot!. Mine has been a slow weight loss because I haven't really been exercising and I'm in school so my activity level is seriously low. Anyway, I follow the original Atkins- no processed foods, meats, veggies, nuts and berries. I still drink a couple times a month, too. I absolutely love it!!
i've never been on a low-carb diet. i don't believe in ANY type of diet that requires either eating <1200 cals, or eating a small amount of a major food group. a low-carb diet falls into the latter category. i'm extremely happy with my weight loss method, which is eating a balanced diet of 1200 to 1550 cals a day and exercising 6x/week. when i finish losing weight, my maintainance range will be 1700-2050 cals, which in my opinion CAN be done for life, thus the weight will stay off FOREVER. i'm totally with you when you say that with a low-carb diet one gains back all the weight and more. not cool.
No matter what the weight loss industry tells you, you cannot just delete carbs from your diet. You need complex carbohydrates for energy, which is why people get so exsausted on this diet.
If you want real weight loss, eat fiber and carbs from fruits like apples, grapefruits, berries, etc. Sweet potatos are another complex carb. Oatmeal too! Just remember to put it alongside fresh veggies and lean protien as possible: especially salmon and tuna.
I'm learning that diets don't have to be excruciating to work, in fact, the fact that people think that makes them believe that they can't lose weight, or they give up. As long as you keep track of what your taking in with food and putting out with excercise, you will lose weight. Stay away from bread, candy, sweets, potatos, rice and things high in sodium, and try to eat as much fresh and natural stuff as possible.
Chances are when you gained the weight back, it was never really actual fat that you lost.
Changing your diet to include better carbs and other things is much more maintainable that a diet like that... it's a lifestyle change that you can maintain and you can follow it long term without feeling tortured. There's no real "going on" and "coming off," it's just making healthier choices that will help you lose weight. "Diet" is a scary word!
it's funny because i'm on day...19...of my low/no carb high protein diet, have lost 10lbs if not a little more and feel fantastic. I didnt get tired [i mean, staying up late and watnot made me tired, not lack of energy], i feel detoxed with no junk in my system and im always full from the protein. I'll be getting off this diet in 10 more pounds (lol) and then re-feeding very carefully, which'll take about another week or two. I'm never going back to my old habits, even if they were healthy, they were very focused on energy that i didnt use all the time. So yeah. I didnt/dont think its that bad, but you've gota find a diet that works for you, yeah?
just to let everyone know, low carb actually means low SIMPLE carbs, you still eat veggies and after a while add in more things like nuts and fruits. it's just picking carbs that are better for you (complex carbs). also, it cuts out sugar COMPLETELY and when your body is free from sugar, its going to lack energy for a few days until it's used to it, and then your body thanks you because sugar is BADDD. in my opinion, that's a healthy way to eat for life.
The theory behind low-carb dieting is kinda sorta right, but the practice is wrong. You can get the same weight loss benefits and have even better health by adding whole grains. And I'm not talking about those fake whole grain breads and cereals, I mean real whole grains like oats, barley and brown rice that still actually looks like a grain. And you don't need to eat so much meat.
I have been on an extremely low carb diet for about 8 years now and will never revert back to my old carbolicious ways! I eat lean high quality protein from sources such as chicken breast, turkey breast, salmon, tuna, escolar, chilean sea bass, sable fish, shrimp, scallops, eel, mackerel, sardines, grass-fed beef, bison, ostrich, elk, venison, goat & lamb... and I also eat non-starchy vegetables such as spinach, asparagus, broccoli, green beans, tomatoes, onions, leeks, bell peppers, etc... To top off my diet I stick to health fats from the protein sources listed above as well as olives/olive oil and flaxseed oil!
That's right: no grains what-so-ever... and no dairy too!

Fact, low carb diet might not work
well, the less energy rich foods we take in, te more fat have to be used. Much
better to have this new grill, called the Big Green Egg. The Big Green Egg is a
bit more than just your average charcoal grill – built into the grill are
several layers of grating that allows for a different approach to charcoal
cooking, as it also is more than able to double as a smoker, for those who want
a slow cooked rack of ribs that melt off the bone. There are recipes and
blogs popping up all over the internet with instructions and recipes for making
everything from barbecued pork to baking bread to home made pizza on the Big
Green Egg, and it might just be worth some short term
loans to get one.
You NEED carbs, no matter what anyone says, a lowcarb/nocarb diet is horrible for you. Your body needs at least 125 carbs a day and that's still considerably low. You can still lose weight relatively fast if you eat about 180 carbs a day.
@Titanic_Spaz@xanga - I also loose 20lb during two weeks. Now I sport every day in morning and evening. It helps me to be strong and alive.I also tried to take some diet pills like Xenical and they help me, but not a lot
