Ab Machines - Do They Actually Work?
One of the frequent questions I often get asked is, do the ab cruncher exercise machines you often see on television actually work? Yes and no is the answer to that question. I know this is not particularly useful but let me explain.
These machines exercise the different layers of ab muscles. The idea is that these machines will stimulate the abs muscles to enlarge. However, they will not necessarily give you a set of rippling, muscular, lean abs. The reason being is that to get a set of ripped abs you will need to get rid of that layer of fat tissue that overlays the abs.
Ab crunchers will not normally remove the fat focally over the abs. Performing hundreds or thousands of sit ups will not get rid of this layer of fat tissue for the exact samereason. The only way to do this is by lowering calorie intake and burning excess calories, therefore reducing fat content all over the body.
Adding an aerobic exercise regime to your exercise program is the most effective way to burn off these calories. Also, exercises that use the big muscles of the body such as the
quadriceps are great at burning calories.
The quadriceps are the big thigh muscles located at the upper part of the legs. A good exercise to stimulate the quads is squats. Due to the fact that they produce so much
heat and burn a large amount of calories means they are great to help weight loss. They also stimulate the body's natural growth hormone production therefore encouraging
muscle growth which is good for building those abdominal muscles.
The most common aerobic exercises are rowing, running, swimming and cycling. For burning fat it is best to do these exercises over a long period of time.
Used on their own these machines won't get you a set of visible rippling abs. You have to do fat busting exercises as well. Great ab development can be had in as soon as twelve weeks if you apply this advice consistently.Have you ever used any ab workout machines or do you stick to the regular crunches?

I haven't used any ab machine other than the ab cruncher at the gym. I've seen the previews for Ab Circle Pro and it does look too good to be true. I do regular crunches if I'm at work and I go jogging and do the elliptical machine as well.
The main point of abs is stability. If you get an ab machine, you lose that aspect of the exercise. Notice doing crunches on an exercise ball makes it a lot more difficult and makes it burn more.
Things like the captain's chair is hard, but supposed to be one of the best ab exercises. Certain types of squats also help you develop your abs, I think.
I have used ab-machines to strengthen my abdominal muscles.
At first, I thought you were talking about that belt that just pulsates and does nothing (well, unless your put it on your neck and use it as a massager). But, I generally just do crunches. I don't feel like I need to spend money for a big machine to help with the abs. I just wish my school had a gym, though.
i do my crunches on an exercise ball. i have a gym membership so i use the machines they have to work out my abs in other ways and different areas and i think i'm starting to show improvement
I used to have an ab-roller. To be honest I'm not sure if it worked because I didn't use it often (mainly because it hurt and was difficult/akward). I kind of want to try the Bender Ball though
@antimony_demon@xanga - is the "captain's chair" the same as the "roman chair" ?
If you need a good ab workout, take a look for the P90x ab ripper. No weights, no machines, just find a spot on the floor and go to town. It's intense, and damn good. I'd highly recomend it to anyone.
the only ab workouts i do are: planks/side-planks, jackknifes, and rollouts (however, i don't like doing rollouts with the ball, so i bought one of those ab wheel, and that's what i use for my rollouts)... but too bad, i still can't show my abs yet... had a really bad sunburn that made it just too embarrassing to show off... lol...
will the skin sunburn lighten up or will it stay dark? how do i lighten it up?
btw, that pic, is a year old...
i don't exercise my abs. hm i should probably start doing that haha..
thanks for this post!
