I Have A Friend who Literally Misses Having Cramps...
I bet a lot of you who just read the title most likely had the same reaction —Whaaa?! Misses having menstrual cramps? Is she out of her mind? Yup, I know. Sounds crazy, right? All of you girls probably know what it’s like to have them. It’s literally like HELL. But there’s a good reason as to why she misses it.
My friend hasn’t had a period for about a little over three years now. I can hear you guys going –Whaaa?!—again. It’s not like she hasn’t had it completely for that period of time, but it has been extremely irregular for her—like once every 5 months or sometimes even 8 months. Even the times she has had them, they usually only last for two to three days at the most.
Initially, she didn’t make a fuss over it because she is SUCH a health nut. She exercises and eats healthy every day. So she thought how bad can it be with this “perfect” lifestyle? But after not having it for over 6 months, she finally realized that this could be a problem.
She went to see a doctor, and apparently she seems to have secondary amenorrhea. (Primary amenorrhea is when a woman hasn’t had her first period by age 16). Amenorrhea is when “a woman of childbearing age fails to menstruate”. So basically, if you haven’t had your period for three months, then you might be having secondary amenorrhea.
There are various causes for amenorrhea, which include emotional or physical stress, obesity, rapid weight loss, stoppage of birth control pills, intense exercise, and so on. But the weird thing is, none of these really applied to her, and her doctor did not find any obvious reasons. Well, maybe she is stressed, but come on, who isn’t ?
Have you girls ever had an irregular period? For how long? What were your own remedies?

i usually get my period either every month or every six months. i'm on birth control now, though, and it helps a lot. it's always on time.
You sure she doesn't have an ED or exercise disorder? She could be good at hiding it. And that's a big reason for secondary amenorrhea. Just saying...
i do but not that irregular lol and i definitely wouldn't miss having cramps
Might be hormonal. Tell her to see an endocrinologist. They're considered specialists, so it might be kind of pricey, but it'd be good to make sure that all of her hormone levels are okay.
my periods are always really really irregular, but they always come. my cycle is anywhere from 27 to 42 days... sooo.... [and I've had my period for 5 years]
I was so regular, up to the day, for years until I went to college. Then things changed.
My first roommate got her period every TWO weeks. So one week she was on it, the next she was PMS, then she was on it, then PMS again...
The next year's roommate didn't get her period the whole year.
So.... it messed me up a little. Them and their crazy hormones.
It sounds less like she "misses cramps" and more like she just wishes to have a normal cycle.
I bet you if she got her period without cramps she wouldn't complain. This title was more for shock effect imo.
i had an irregular cycle for about a year. it was kinda frightening but all i did was change my diet.
i never had a regular cycle until i got surgery and the doctors had to put me on BC because i can't make the hormones myself anymore...and i HATE having a regular cycle now! it's so annoying... i just switched to seasonique so i only have to get 1 period every 13 weeks ^_^
if there's nothing wrong, why on earth would anyone be sad about missing their period LOL?
Mine was really irregular at first, but once i started birth control it was normal, then I put myself on depo provera (shot in your muscle that stops your cycle). Of course I didn't have my period during that year or so on D.P, but I a have been off it for over a month and haven't had a period yet. I am going back on birth control, hopefully that will help me out. Its kind of nerve wracking.
well i have polycystic ovarian syndrome. so thats why i don't get it.
i haven't had mine for seven months. before that it was very irregular. so i haven't had a regular cycle for a year now. my doctor was worried i'd been losing too much weight but when i told her i'd lost the 10+ lbs GRADUALLY over the year and that i eat plenty in a day she tried to adjust to my lifestyle. i've never felt so good now that i work out and eat better! i LIKE not having my period usually...don't have to worry about cramps, PMS, bathing suits, and wearing the right clothes. but my mom's concerned and she doesn't want me to get cancer because of it. i've taken estrogen pills and now i'm on birth control. still no period. but i really don't want to gain weight or lessen my exercising routine. i like it. how can being healthy be so bad??
what's your friend trying to do to get her period back? sometimes i miss having a period too. i can't explain. maybe just so i know i truly am healthy and that i can bear a child if i want and all...Well I am 7 months post partum and still no period, and I really do miss it... I am one of those freaks that feels womanly and cleansed when I'm on a regular cycle LOL (I haven't had my period cause I'm nursing my baby on demand btw).
There was a period of seven months in which I only had mine three times. It was my last year of undergrad while I was applying for grad schools and trying to finish up my Bachelor's degree. I chalked it up to stress. It worried the doc at first, but after a bit of poking and prodding she came to the same conclusion I had.
A few years ago I was hit with a lot of stress and it took it's toll on my cycle. I would go 2 to 3 months without getting my period. I went to the gyno and she put me on birth control. I've been regular and haven't skipped one period since.
my period has been irregular for almost a year. my last one, was 3/4 months ago..
i duno if this is true. i heard this from my cousin. that women can smell other women's hormones near them. and it can affect the women's amount of periods...
My best friend has to take hormone pills because she doesn't get her period regularly. I think she only has her period like twice a year at most and the cramps hurts really bad (maybe because 6 months of pain is crammed into one month. Ugh!). Hers is a problem with her ovaries though and she goes to the doctor often to get bloodworks done because it affects her fertility.
Another friend I guess has the symptoms of second amenorrhea. She hasn't had her period for 4 months (probably 7 now) and thought she was pregnant at first and was in denial. Finally someone bought her a home pregnancy test and it said she wasn't preggers. Then she reasoned that its because she's so active and runs a lot. I think she has issues with her body because she lost so much weight and is so weird around food. But what irks me is that she thinks its normal and that she won't go to a ob-gyn to get checked :(
weird, good luck to your friend! my period is rarely irregular
@MangoWOW@xanga - the "shock effect" is something good writers use. It got you to read it, didn't it? just sayin.
@Emmijoy@xanga - Using it (shock effect in the title) makes you good at advertising, not writing. Get it straight.
i dont think she misses the cramps, she misses the normacy of a regular mentrual cycle and the femininity that is also associate with the monthly gift.
i mean Ive def met some women in my past whove been going through menopause and have told me how they miss their periods. its a symbol of womenhood and when its gone or very sparse like your friends it can become distressing. And that stress of worrying about never getting her period is prob. also effecting it as well...
plus having such irregular periods can result in a hard time conceiving.
@MangoWOW@xanga - No need to get defensive- I was not trying to offend. In my opinion, the "shock effect" is the mark of a good writer- and advertising does have a lot to do with writing, and the way you word things. And what is one's main goal in "advertising?" ...To grab the buyer's attention. Just like a goal of a "writer" is to grab the "reader's" attention. So I think I've already "got it straight." Thanks.
@Emmijoy@xanga - well I didn't mean to come off as defensive. More like a faux-attitude divaesque. lol
But no, advertising is to draw attention while writing is to actually keep it. So I think I made it clear that being a good advertiser doesn't make you a good writer.
@MangoWOW@xanga - I think you missed my point. I didn't mean that writing was only supposed to grab your attention the way advertising does- but it is there to grab it, and keep it. This post kept my attention, but I probably wouldn't have opened it if the title wasn't so "shockish."- see where I'm going with this? If not, I'll respect your opinion, and let's just agree to disagree. :)
if there's nothing wrong, why on earth would anyone be sad about missing their period LOL?

it's not that theres anything wrong they just can't find anything wrong. having an irregular/no period that is on going doesnt allow you to become pregnant!
I don't get a period because I'm on the Mirena IUD system which causes amenorrhea in about 30% of women who have it. I love it - 99.9% effective birth control and no periods! :)
