  • The Economy is Making Me Unhealthy

I hate the economy so much, not only is it hurting everyone around me financially but it's hurting it's also hurting my health. The longer the economic problems continue the more I'm forced to cut back on healthier foods.  Trying to eat on a budget is extremely tough. Lately I've been buying a lot more fruits and vegetables, along with my homemade sandwiches.  I've completely cut back on eating at the office.

The other major factor has been eating with my parents.  I've been doing that more often just so I could save money for dinner.  I used to eat a Subway sandwich for lunch but then I realized I could just eat a couple of fruits and buy a snack and I'll end up saving  a few bucks per day.  I hate having to eat like this because the more I workout, the more food my body wants, so the more I have to play the balancing act.

Are you having trouble eating healthier due to money problems?  Have you been eating more fast food as well?

i feel like eating healthy in itself is a life choice one is going to have to dedicate themselves to, if someone is really concerned to eat healthier, they'll find some way to make it happen. however, i've always felt that "healthy food" (fresh fruits/veggies/meats/organic grown) was always expensive to begin with (naturally, due to production/transportation costs for example); so...I don't think it's going to become any more affordable with the economy being the way it is.

ive heard that frozen fruits/veggies retain most of their nutritious vitamins/properties, so that could be one way to work that into a diet, also local farmers markets will sell produce at cheaper prices because they're able to cut down on transportation costs.

i'm still working on trying to make up some kind of healthy meal plan but so far ive been too lazy.

Not necessarily. I buy my own groceries for my lunches at work and some dinners. I live with my parents currently so there's plenty to eat...the only problem I find is avoiding the sweets my Dad loves to have in the house. I'm sure once I'm out on my own and need to buy completely my own food then I might see what you're talking about. :\

Yeah. My mom forced me to stop being a vegetarian because buying the soymeat and ACTUAL VEGETABLES was too expensive. Now I just eat fried meat (she fries EVERYTHING, it's ridiculous!) with rice...everyday..I can't even remember the last time I've had a freaking vegetable. The economy is making me go through malnutrition. Wonderful.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to be healthy. Honestly, just cut out meat to either once a week or for special occasions. Eat lots of veggies, fruits...make rice porridge, kimchi, use eggs, beans, potatoes, yams, and be creative with your dishes. A little bit of green onions, regular onions, spices, herbs, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, etc makes a big difference. Plus, you can make your own bread for pretty cheap too as long as you have time. Soups and stews are great if you want something hearty. I avoid fast food cuz even though it's cheap now, your health will be affected later...and that's an ever bigger price to pay.

I went to the grocery and got salad stuff. Honestly, all I got was lettuce, tomatoes, goat cheese, etc. to make salads. My bill was somehow about $50!! Like, WTH! I want to be healthier but come on, it's too expensive!!
