Which Cardio Machine Burns The Most Calories?
When I go to the gym, I usually like to run on a treadmill. But I’ve heard it’s better to switch up cardio machines, and introduce some variety to your workouts. By doing so, you won’t get bored as easily, and your body won’t hit a plateau from doing the same routine over and over.
So, despite my love of running, I decided to switch up cardio machines. I still run on a treadmill when I first hit the gym, but I’ve also been using the elliptical machines, Stairmasters, and taking spinning classes as well (I also really want to try jump rope classes sometime soon). I’ve been doing my cardio workouts in this way for the past few months now, and it’s definitely working for me. I don’t get as bored as I did before, and I actually look forward to my workouts every morning!
But then one question suddenly came to mind—which cardio machine burns the most calories? I always thought it was the treadmill, but maybe that's just because I’ve been hearing all these weight loss success stories from running. I still don’t know. What do you guys think?

I think the treadmill does, but all of them can burn a lot of calories if you switch up the intensity.
My guess would be in this order:
#1 Treadmill#2 Eliptical#3 Exercise Bike#4 Rowing#5 Step machine
Whether or not this is true.....I really don't know. lol
I would personally say the eliptical.
Much madd love,
Christian
The Ergometer (the rowing machine) provides an amazing full body workout.
the erg, hands down. You just have to know how to row correctly and how to do a proper workout to see the results.
Depends on how you use the machines. In my experience, I tend to burn the most on the rowing machine and the treadmill, and the least on the elliptical, stationary bike and stairmaster (and I find those last three intolerably boring). However, when I actually ride a bike outside, I tend to burn a lot more calories than any of the above machines because I go farther and push myself harder outside. Plus, it's more enjoyable.
i really like the precor usa. its pretty much like an elliptical. look it up, maybe your gym has it. i love to see how many calories im burning and i looove seeing that number increase every second. its amazing! and even if you're burning the same amount of calories as a regular elliptical it really seems like you're burning more calories faster. it doesnt count calories by 1..2..3.. it counts them .2 .4 1.3. 1.5
i love it!
The elliptical does. I hate treadmills.
@missstewart09@xanga - my gym has those. I love them <3
treadmill is a close fit to outdoor running, which is the best way to get in shape--outdoor activities. same goes with the boating exercise machine. but the boating kind of focuses on your quads and biceps.
stair mill. where the steps rotate to better simulate actual climbing of stairs. as long as you don't put all your weight on your arms. elliptical is least.
All of them can burn extreme amounts, it depends on your method and what you do to burn the most.
I tend to burn more calories on the elliptical machine. It's also my favorite, so I'm on there more than any other cardio machine.
@EndlessMike03@xanga - i agree. especially when you do intervals on it.
I would say elliptical, I could burn 500 calories for exercising one hour.
When I went to the gym I switched my cardio between ellipticals, stair steppers and recumbant bikes....out of all of them I burned the most on the elliptical (I'm not one for running, so I didn't use the treadmill often or for very long)
Row machines are amazing. Next to that ellipticals -- great for joints. Bikes are good if you have time. Treadmill is running anyway. Best cardio ever? Mountain climbers while being yelled at by Marine Corps drill instructors.
The one you stay on the longest.
Seriously, pick one you enjoy using and you'll probably use it longer and will be more likely to increase the difficulty level while on it (burning more calories). In the end you will have burned more calories on the machine you enjoy using than one you hate and can't wait to get off of.
Thanks for all your great comments! Do you guys have any good suggestions or your own methods to burn the most calories for each cardio machine?
go check out some cool vids on the best elliptical out there. These things make the competition look foolish. www.youtube.com/user/octanefitness
All I know is that I sweat WAY MORE when I am on the elliptical than when I am on the treadmill! Let's just say WAY MORE!!!
I love elipticals =)
i would say eliptical
but certain machines might be better for certain people. like i have no endurance so i really hate using the treadmill, where i can on the eliptical for a longer time and it is easier for me to burn more calories

HAHA.
Anyway I suggest High Intensity Interval Training, which is basically changing up your running speed from super fast til you can't take it, to relaxed walking or jogging every quarter mile or so... you can do this on the elliptical too, treadmill or outdoors... it's both awesome and it sucks at the same time ha!
Well...I've used all of this machines in the picture, and, according to the machine status (time, calories, km, etc), the treadmill seems to be the one that burns the most...But I don't really know if the machine status is REALLY specific. =)
The machine doesn't burn them. You do. it's all about how hard you push yourself and for how long. What you're doing doesn't really matter.
