  • Addicted to Diet Soda...Correction: Diet Mountain Dew

I love the Abs Diet and I will gladly tell anyone who will listen that it’s the greatest thing ever. But my abs, the outline of which is vaguely visible if I lean back at a 75-degree angle, still haven’t seen the light of day for one main reason: Diet Mountain Dew. Soda has always, always been my number one nutritionally-empty vice. And I always seemed to gravitate toward the most sugary, horrible and ridiculous artificially-colored varieties I can find. I never went for Coke or Ginger Ale; I was all about Mountain Dew; the red Mountain Dew; Surge, which I haven’t seen anywhere in years but which was just like Mountain Dew; and Welch’s f’ing Grape Soda, of all things.

When I was 21, I noticed that the campus store where I went to college sold Diet Mountain Dew, which I had never heard of. Once I tried it and realized it tasted just like the regular kind, I was like, "Yes! The final piece of the puzzle!" And then it became my poison.

I got so used to Diet Mountain Dew that it’s now the only soda I like. I buy the 20-ounce bottles even though it’d be way cheaper to go for the cases because I know if I had 12 cans of DMD in my house, I could probably drink all of them in one day. That’s gross, but true. Diet soda feels like the wussiest addiction ever, but it’s so hard to break because it’s the lack of calories/sugars/carbs/pretty much anything makes it that much easier to blow off. The one thing DMD does not lack is carbonation, which is the root of the problem. If I stand up, the part of my stomach that I can grab is like a pizza crust of flab. That's not that much and proportionately, my stomach should be flatter than it is. I drink lots of water, but also lots of DMD, which results in all the gaseous bubbles expanding in my stomach and leaving me perpetually bloated.

I always wonder if quitting Diet Mountain Dew for like a month would leave my stomach looking like a wall. Unfortunately, my month always seems to begin tomorrow or  Monday or next weekend. Does anyone else have this problem with diet soda?

dang, i read the title and thought it was a post i had made and forgotten about...lol

i'm totally addicted to diet dew. can't seem to kick it, don't really want to kick it. i drink 3 cans a day. that number went way up this summer, but once i realized how much i toned it back down to 3 a day again...lol. coffee is an okay substitute a couple times a day, but i just can't get over freezing cold super carbonated diet dew!

  • live_for_love@xanga

Diet Pepsi, please. That stuff is my lifeblood, though I have cut back to two a day max.

diet mountain dew is like one of the best creations...ever. its SO GOOD. and like u said it taste so much like the original its insane. its the only diet soda other then diet orange that makes a really great chaser cause it still taste super sweet n fruity which takes the horrible taste of vodka out of my mouth and the carbonation help the vodka go down like sugarrrrrr...ahhh made taking shots NOTHINGG.

green apple smirnoff and DMD chaser. = a great night.

Can't say I do. I love the clean taste of water with a freshly squeezed lemon. Yum.

  • TalithaKum88@xanga

I'm definitely a diet coke addict, but I branch out every now and then. Diet sunkist, sprite zero, or even diet pepsi.

I love Diet Mt. Dew.  I'm a big fan of Diet Dr. Pepper, too.  Actually, I think there are very few diet drinks that I don't like.  I know they're all super bad for me, but I still drink them from time to time.  I've started drinking tea instead, though.  It's still caffeinated and bad, but at least I control how much artificial (or real) sweeter goes into it.

Lay off the aspartame.  It's a killer.  It gave me cancer.  I used to drink a ton of diet drinks, especially diet Dr. Pepper.  Now if they use Splenda, or, even better, Stevia . . .

  • xKlaaaaa@xanga

I'll drink any diet or sugar free drinks, it's all I live on besides water and green tea. When I run out of Diet Coke, I drink water and green tea until the next day and buy diet Coke.

I'm sure once I gave up drinking diet drinks I'd look a lot thinner too, but I just can't seem to do it.

  • xueyo@xanga

omg i love mountain dew! but not to the extent of drinking as much as you. in fact, i just realized today that i drink it rather rarely. o.o and i've never heard of diet moutain dew in singapore. i wish they had it!

Giving up sodas really helps your cause for abs. It was one of the toughest things I cut from eating/drinking habits but now I couldn't even imagine drinking it again. No cravings whatsoever. It's tough but start small (ie. 1 day, 1 week, 1 month) and you'll eventually get there.

  • wANNaBeThiNNy921@xanga

okay so the carbonation makes you fat??? so what if you like opened the pop until it turned flat and then drank it??? would it not make you fat? haha lol it sounds silly but i don't like carbonation anyways...

Diet Coke addict . . . or, former addict.  I made a promise to a couple of friends to stop drinking ANY soda back in May.  Our goal was one month.  I made it past the month, and was doing really well until the stress of studying for the bar exam hit me, then I 'relapsed'.  Unfortunately, I had been off the Diet Coke for so long & consumed so much of it in a short period of time that it made me feel utterly sick.  When I tried to go running the next day, my body wasn't as efficient as usual and I kept wanting to throw up.  The only thing that had changed was the Diet Coke.  It felt as if my body was trying to do a huge toxins dump, which I'm sure it was.

The first few days are hard, but try to just quit for a week.  Then make it 2.  It won't be all that long, and soda really won't even be that appealing.  Good luck!

I know that I should really give up soda, but it's hard. I drink a lot of Ginger Ale mostly and don't like diet sodas at all except for Diet Dr. Pepper, where I like the diet more than the regular DP. When I do want to drink soda, I go for Ginger Ale, Sprite, or the colored Mt. Dew varieties.

I was so addicted to diet dew when I was at school. I would drink 3, sometimes 4 a day resulting in a 24 pack being drank in one week. I remember stating to my room mate, "If diet mountain deer was beer, I'd be in serious trouble" .. haha
I still love diet mountain dew, but my new addiction for the summer is diet sunkist!! You should try it :)

  • ThinkingofGod@xanga

My mom has a problem like that. For her she's addicted to the caffeine in DMD. But one thing that helped her is that she found caffeine free DMD. She just recently had a near heart attack and they told her that she needed to get off the caffeine, but she doesn't like anything but DMD so she just went to the caffeine free version. It's ok, you're not the only one who is addicted to it.

  • S0N1@xanga

    I HATE Mountain dew >.>

  • iwillbethinagain115@xanga

    i am exactly like you.
at least we don't drink 1600 calories of it a day, it's diet :)

it's the most delicious stuff on this planet. i went to camp last summer for three weeks and they only had the 20 oz bottles for 1.50 each. i spent over $80 in that goddamn vending machine on diet mountain dew... and i always needed exact change, so i would PLEAD with people for their quarters, which they needed to do laundry and that's when i realized i had a problem, when i
d rather walk around in dirty clothes than not have my mountain dew...

in fact i'm going out to get some right now.

:) good luck with your abs... maybe try slowly weening off it? that's what i do when it gets really bad. cold turkey doesn't work.

  • Pcgecko85@xanga

Diet Dr. Pepper is good.  But I keep it to one a day at work.

  • Neowind@xanga

More of a diet coke kinda guy.  Rum and diet coke used to be my thing till I quit drinking alcohol.  I never really see the need to cut diet soda, so I still drink it once in awhile. If you need to cut back, the best way is just to not buy it.  You need clear access to ice cold water, and often that means a large bottle that you could hold water in, and carry that around you all the time.

  • superGchik@xanga

don't worry, you'll be fine.  i'm also love diet soda, i'll do diet mtn dew, diet pepsi and diet dr pepper.  i don't know what it is but i just like the taste of it.  though i try not to drink it so much, maybe 1 can or less per day if any.

  • xjadersx@xanga

I love diet pepsi but I guess the carbonation is something to look at.  I guess I should stop drinking it, then maybe I won't get as bloated. I think coffee gives me just as good of a kick.

  • imyourstargirl@xanga

I guess I'm lucky cos I've never tried Diet Mountain Dew, and I hate diet soda of any kind. Sniffing Diet Dr. Pepper is the most I'll do, but I don't like drinking that stuff. :P

  • k_md@xanga

    *raises hand*

Totally addicted. And infinitely bloaty. So that's why my crunches seem to be in vain....

  • NewAngel88@xanga

im completely addicted to soda.. like.. its somethin about the bubbles lol i just cant seem to go without them

  • zinda@xanga

my mom lives off diet mt dew for as long as i can remember. she depends on the caffeine to get her through her night shift. and even when she's not working, she usually doesn't want anything else.
