  • Reasons Why You Should NEVER go to a Buffet

Buffets seem to be an American thing, they are all over the place, relatively cheap, and come in different food types, such as Chinese buffets, American food buffets, country style food, and pizza buffets. Most lure you in with their "ALL YOU CAN EAT SHRIMP DINNER!" and "ENDLESS PIZZA FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY" commercials. Sadly, one dinner at a buffet can easily pack on over 3,000 calories, and if you are anything like my boyfriend, probably over 5,000.

Here are a few reasons why you should never go to a buffet again:

    1. Germs.

Germs are everywhere in buffet establishments. Millions and trillions of germs crawling all of your food, plates, forks, napkins, and tables. There are easily more germs at a buffet than a regular restaurant because of the high volume of people and children running around sneezing in the apple cobbler. There has been plenty of times that I have gotten a cold after eating at a buffet restaurant.

    2. The Calories!

Seriously. 5 plates of pizza, half a plate of french fries, mac and cheese, that salad with half a bottle of ranch, and everything else really adds up. Even if you think you are eating healthy, most buffets drench their green beans and vegetables in butter and cheese.

    3. The Food Coma.

Anyone ever go to a buffet then go into a food coma from all of the carbs and fat? Yeah. Not only are food comas unhealthy, but they make you feel really gross for a day or 3 afterward.

    4. Weight Gain.

Constipation, gaining a pound or two (yeah if you eat over 3,500 calories), and not wanting to work it off.

    5. Low Quality Food.

Some buffet restaurants do have good food, and some expensive ones are probably high quality. But for most American buffets, the $10 lunch special isn't going to give you high quality food. You might as well spend that $10 on a smaller meal with better ingredients.

Do you frequently go to buffets? Do you like them? Why or why not?

this is really a "no shit sherlock" healthkicker article. same with the last article this particular author wrote.

I want credible and newsworthy articles from healthkicker. not just "buffets are bad" stories.

buffets = binge eat o_o uncontrollably

  • StarlitGoodbyes@xanga

    But...food tastes so good.

  • kaybaby666@xanga

My big thing with buffets is never being able to eat enough food to validate spending a stupid amount of money on it! I've gone to two buffets that cost about $21/person for their dinner

Buffets = good yet sooo bad.

  • IWillLiftMyEyes@xanga

buffets are my nightmare. i think it's just another example of americans doing everything to excess.  why can't we just give a little of this food that we have so much of to someone else who has none?

  • MissPixieGlitter@xanga

i'm the type of girl who never gets her money's worth at buffets because i don't eat that much. but there are good ones that i like. the bellagio buffet is pretty awesome, and i've heard good things about wynn's.

oh! fogo de chao is a continuous service brazilian steakhouse, and it is amazing. servers will bring you continuous servings of 15 different cuts of meat (all fire-roasted, and they'll cut if right off the rack onto your plate). the steaks are accompanied by a superb salad bar and brazilian side dishes brought to your table. reservations aren't too bad. google the pictures, they'll make your mouth water.

so i guess i love buffets? the good ones at least.

I must disagree with the "low quality food" part. It depends on the buffet. I go to a really nice one that costs about 30 dollars a person (minado, it was called) and I must say it's worth it.

Idrc, I'll still go once in awhile, not like everyday or anything. I never gain any weight from just going and having one dinner their, and I must say, I eat A LOT.

I say if you're healthy, it doesn't matter, but if you're already overweight, it's common sense not to do anything that could make your situation worse.

Maybe once or twice a year.. tops! Never thought about germs but your absolutely right! Everybody touching the same serving utensil, yikes!

  • lil_squirrel4ever@xanga

I do buffets occassionally, and it's something different to do when you are in big groups of people (I do it for the variety, not the quantity).  Also you are just as likely to get sick in any other establisment (it's happened to me in a regular restaurant).  Totally unfounded.

  • xjadersx@xanga

I only go like once a year. The Mandarin is the one I go to. I know it's not healthy. But I don't eat so much that I feel sick.

No reason for the guilt trips.  You can do that same damage or worse at a regular restaurant, especially where you only get to try one thing so you're going to choose the one that tastes best and is probably the worst for you.  At least at a buffet you can get a small piece of those bad things so you'll get to taste them, but don't have to make it the whole plate.  The salad bars do include low-fat dressing options.  Portion sizes are huge at other restaurants and pretty much fill you up, so the total amount eaten may not be any different.  I don't think the expensive ones are worth it, though, for that reason.  I go to the cheap ones - not the best quality food, but lots of variety and no waiting time.  Good deal on California rolls.

Our way of doing it - schedule it so that it's the only major meal of the day (like a late lunch, with only a small snack later).  Work out right before to still be burning calories faster.  And don't overeat just because we could.

  • cutesycharm@xanga

@kimtendo@xanga - Yeah, I realize some are probably fabulous! I would like to try them one day. :p

  • cutesycharm@xanga

@MissPixieGlitter@xanga - I want to go to the one at the Bellagio! I know it would probably be clean.....

  • cutesycharm@xanga

@shes_lump@xanga - Not like there are many "newsworthy" articles about health or dieting ANYWAY.

  • Morningstarrising@xanga

@artemis_tx@xanga - I 100% agree with what you wrote.  My husband and I go to the Chinese buffets (rarely), but when we do, I usually eat a lot of fruit, sushi, and soup.  My kids like the noodles, and my husband can eat what he likes (which isn't always good, but protein after a workout is usually a good thing).  And we can do it all under $20 (my kids are 2 and 3, and most establishments don't count them as separate for buffets) at the moment.... that's less than it would be for me to eat at a Japanese steakhouse (and just consume sushi).

  • laytexduckie@xanga

Well, I go because being a student, I'm on a budget. I can say, though, that I can eat alot and my metabolism takes care of the rest. I usually go to the Asian buffets (the ones that usually sport the all-you-can-eat crappy sushi).

  • C_UNIT42@xanga

F-That!!  Double Dave's Pizza Buffet rocks!!  I tear that up at least once a month, twice a week in the summer.  Can't beat all you can eat pizza after a day at the pool with beers!!

  • amy_cyc@xanga

I love Buffet but I have to limit what I eat .

  • TheScaleDiaries@xanga

I go to buffets, but it's a very rare occassion (and I usually try to eat a salad or something before chowing down to prevent from over stuffing). It;s the dessert bar that's the danger zone for me lol

  • black_lie@xanga

i went to a seafood buffet this weekend... there's not many ways you can drench sushi in oil and butter =P and probably half of my meal was fruit because i'm a fruit junkie

  • TakingxOverxMe@xanga

I like going to buffets a couple times a year.
The thing I like about them is I can have all my favorite foods in one meal.

  • s_h_a_sha@xanga

i gofor buffets ince or twice a year! :P

    desert !!!!!! and seafood!
  • LettersToJulian@xanga

For as long as I can remember, my family has always gone to buffets, and overtime I got annoyed. Same food, it seems. They prefer oriental foods. They do have fruits but it's really hard trying to eat healthy. I try to avoid them now.

  • quiet_strength@revelife

i think this is ridiculous, and the only valid point is the low quality food...mayyyybe calories, but honestly, just because food is in sight doesn't mean you have to grab all you can as though it were your last meal on earth. i try not to eat much differently than i would any other time at a buffet, and if i do for just one meal, sheesh people it is not the end of the world! and germs? hunny, YOU and everyone else are LOADED with germs. and the more you worry about it the more you are going to psych yourself out!
