Ab Workout Anyone?
Having a nice 6-pack is always nice, but its a slow and grueling process if you're not already in great shape. Obviously your abs will never show through layers of fat, so for it to happen the first thing to do is get rid of the extra fat from the midsection. Assuming thats already done and you're just trying to make your abs look good, I have a simple workout that will help.
The key to making your abs visible is building them up, just like you would your biceps or other muscles, but not so they are huge and bulging, just so they have a defined shape. All it takes is a few sets on 2 or 3 machines.
The Nautilus Nitro Abdominal is one machine that I use at my gym and it is awesome. I just throw on as much weight as I can do for 6-10 reps, slow and controlled, for about 4-5 sets and move on.
My other favorite is the Life Fitness Torso Rotation machine. Same sets and reps on here as on the previous machine, switching sides after each set.
And the best one is not a machine at all, its just straight-leg raises on a bench w/ a dumbbell between your feet. This focuses on the often neglected lower abs. You just lay down on a flat bench with your butt as close to the edge as possible, stand the dumbbell straight up and hold it between your feet, and keeping your legs straight raise your legs to about a 45 degree angle and back down just past parallel to the floor. About 3 sets of 10 should do the trick.
I like to do this like a circuit starting with the leg raises, then torso rotation, then nitro abdominal, resting only to move to the next station. For added difficulty I try to hold the last rep for about 10 seconds then slowly let the weight down to finish. After I finish I don't wanna do anything else, so I always do abs last. I only do this workout twice a week on Monday and Thursday. The rest of the week when I do abs its usually some crunches, oblique dips, knee tucks, etc... without wights and in higher reps to give them a nice burn. I hope that this is useful to anyone who wants to try it.
Anyone else workout abs this way? What other things have you found work to get your abs looking great?

Personally..I prefer NO machines. P90x's Ab Ripper 'X' has got it going on! ;)
You know, I never really was too interested in machines for ab work outs. I prefer doing a bit of weighted sit ups and side-sit ups on the incline bench, hello dollies, flutterkicks, and swimming to maintain the midsection. Couple that up with some intense and long plank exercises and you have quite the midsection.
Great article though. Hope to see one about killer shoulders. I have yet to build the shoulders I dream of.
@Titanic_Spaz@xanga - That's what I'm talking about!
@nolan_kun@xanga - hm... i got some tips for shoulder workouts... maybe i'll write one up now!
I posted about this yesterday. Everything i mentioned is based on experience. The basics: Great ab exercises are many, but the core good ones are crunches, leg lifts and sit ups. Now rid that fatty belly chibby chubby!

i used both of them in the gym. the first one is very tiring. i prefer torso, works better for me.
well, my abs DON'T look great, because i still have some fat on my stomach. losing stomach fat has more to do with diet than anything else, not to mention that you can't spot reduce, so my fat there doesn't wanna budge (still working on it though). however, i think there are plenty of exercises that build the muscle, many of which don't involve machines.
reg crunches work for me . like 5 reps of 50 sets :]

I don't and never did use a machine to get a flat stomach.
first of all, CARDIO is numero uno. Lose the fat around your middle by running (that's just a suggestion). Then after you run, do about 30 front crunches, 20 right side crunches, and 20 left side crunches. Repeat. Then do 45 seconds of bicycles. Proceed to doing 5 rollups. afterward relax...
repeat at night.
crunches.
My workout is horizontal jumps where you jump as far as you can swinging your arms and propelling yourself forward. This is not only a great cardio workout, but it's a natural way to workout your abs.
I was searching online, and I found this http://www.tibesti.com/articles/OSIM%C2%AE-iGallop%E2%84%A2-Core-and-Abs-Exerciser/424/6 . And even better, Lee Reherman, he was the HAWK! from American Gladiators, lmao.
Yep! I do that same workout! I especially love the first one, which I call the "giant ab chair". The 2nd one, which I call the "twisty", has made my waistline defined! I still don't have a 6 pack though :(
