Blue M&Ms May Help People Recover From Spinal Injuries??
When I was young, I remember pranking my friends by giving them M&Ms, and explaining how they were “magic pills” that would make them smart and help them ace their tests (Of course, I scratched off the letter “M” before handing it to them). Thinking about it now, it's kind of funny that they naively believed me. Those were good memories...
Well, I may have been pretty evil back then, but maybe not so much now because according to new research, blue M&Ms may be the “magic pills” for patients with spinal injuries. (Click here to read the article). When researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center injected the blue food dye that is in M&Ms and Gatorade (also known as the compound Brilliant Blue G (BBG)) into rats with spinal injuries, they were able to walk again, but with a slight limp. The other mice, who didn't get an injection of BBG, “never regained their mobility.” The only downside of this was that the mice temporarily turned blue (Oh gosh, I can't imagine blue mice, ewww!!) However, according to the researchers, “more testing is needed to assess the safety of BBG before human clinical trials can begin.”
To be honest, I don't know how much or how long one should consume blue M&Ms or blue colored- Gatorade, and also how long it would take him/her to recover. Maybe I should start eating blue M&Ms; I hope I don’t turn into a smurf. But wouldn't eating a lot of sweets be bad for your health?
What do you guys think? Would you be willing to try this new treatment even though it may turn you blue temporarily, and you would walk with a limp?

Kinda makes me scared to consume M&Ms, wondering what exactly is in those colorings... *pops an M&M into his mouth* What? I'll stop tomorrow.
I wouldn't eat a huge amount of BBG coloured M&M's or Gatorade. Just stick the BBG in me! They'll eventually find a way to make me less blue. It gives people with spinal injuries another chance at walking, which I think is the main issue here. If you do turn a little blue, sign up for the blue man group!
nah i don't believe.
i think for it to work on humans it would require that person to eat only what contained the BBG and nothing else in order for there to be enough of it.
I remember when I was younger ppl were saying blue products could be cancerous.
Nah.
If there were no other negative side effects/consequences from taking it, you bet I'd get an injection of BBG should I ever injure my spine. I'd rather be temporarily blue and walking than be paralyzed my whole life.
I'll believe it when I see the blue mice running around.
blue mice? sweet!
so does that mean that if I eat food with white food coloring in it and I eat it a lot will my dreams of being pale finally come true?!
haha
I heard blue M&Ms make you horny. I thought that was crazy, but this one takes the cake.
I'll believe it when I see it. :)
i heard recently that eating food dyes leads to hyperactivity or ADD (i don't remember which) in children, and thus in people, so i will try to avoid food dyes as well as i can. i know it's nearly impossible, though!
I'd rather be blue forever than stuck in a wheelchair forever if I had a spinal injury!
@LivingLifePerfectlyImperfect@xanga - True! I'd say the same too . . .
I wonder what the other colours do for you. Personally, I like red M&Ms, Smarties, Skittles. I think we need to do some testing on red dyes. If the results come back to be 'getting richer' or 'getting smarter', I'll be first human test subject
I saw a picture of one of the blue mice- it was actually pretty adorable. It looked like a cartoon of a very cold mouse!
/facepalm.
So when are we going to cure cancer? AIDS? Anyone?
First of all, the blue mice look adorable. I want one!
Second, if this actually worked for humans, and I ever had a spinal injury, I'd be using this. So what if you're blue (and limping)? You can move. I think it'd be a good choice, considering the other option would be paralysis.
