September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month - Are You Aware?

September is childhood cancer awareness month, and with nearly 12,500 children under the age of 15 diagnosed with some form of cancer ever year, the need for awareness is more necessary than ever. Unfortuantely, approximately 2,000 of those children will die after being diagnosed because there is no cure for cancer.

Leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children, followed by cancer of the brain and nervous system.

Events are held all around the world in order to raise money to help find a cure for cancer, and people all around the globe are hoping that one day, a cure will be found. Foundations like Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) (Foundation's website) hold fundraisers throughout the country in hopes to contribute to the search.

Have you known someone - a child or adult - with cancer?  Do you think cultures need to be more aware of this disease?

When I was 15, I knew a young girl (somewhere between 5 and 7 years old) who died from leukemia.  It was very sad for all involved.... she was very loved by all of the members of our church.

yeah i know some people who have had cancer.. almost everyone on my mother's side of my famliy has had some form of cancer. yes i do think people need to know more about it. even if they don't care, i think it would be good for everyone to understand what's going on...

My mom passed away in April from lung cancer, and it still seems surreal sometimes because I expect to see her, but she's not there. A kid getting cancer is really heartbreaking though because there's so much life ahead of them..

I had bone cancer (ewings sarcoma) when i was 13.  It took me 3 entire years to recover; a year of straight chemo, and two years dealing with all the complications that often come along.  I met a girl my age while in the hospital, with the same type of cancer.  my mom just told me that she's been dead(it's been about 5 years now), and she hadn't told me about it because she didn't want to scare me.  The girl, named Lauren, finished her year of chemo, but instead of eventually recovering, like I did, she developed lung cancer instead (often the treatment for one cancer can cause another).  Childhood cancer is a horrible thing, and the more awareness and support there is for it, the better.
