  • If I Was A Vegetarian

If you think this blog is about bashing vegetarians or vegans in anyway, it's not. I'm actually writing this because of a friend who happens to be vegan who asked a really good question that I never thought about before.

Saturday night he treated me out to eat at a Japanese restaurant  that also served a mean tofu steak and teppan style veggies. As we sat down and began to peruse the menu, we started to converse about certain items on the menu, like BBQ pork don, soba noodles in vegetable broth, chilled tofu in chili sauce, edamame... and a lot of the food was very appetizing and appealing to me

I wasn't really sure of what I was gonna eat on the menu - I was seriously concentrating on getting something with fish in it when my friend randomly asked me, "If you were a vegan or vegetarian, what would you eat?" That question took me by surprise because no one's ever asked me that before, so when I thought about it I came to this conclusion of the list of things I would probably eat the most of if I was a vegetarian or vegan:

    1. Soy milk

    2. Boba

    3. Mushrooms of every kind

    4. Berries (any kind)

    5. Tofu

    6. Rice (can't live without!)

Those top veggies and food products I wouldn't mind eating those foods for the rest of my life.

If you were (or if you are vegan/vegetarian ) what would be the top foods you would eat? What specific foods would keep you from being a vegetarian?

I'm a vegetarian. Just eat the same shit I normally eat except no meat.

  • sick_of_dreams@xanga

fruits and berrys, cheese(this is the only food I could never go without), corn

  • Morningstarrising@xanga

Oh I totally agree! Those all look amazing, too!

  • AutumnShadowsQ@xanga

Broccoli would be high on my list. Agreed on the berries, not so much on the mushrooms. I'd have a lot of pasta products (love the grains), and walnuts. But who am I kidding, I'd also have unhealthy things like chips and chocolate when I get a bit tired of veggies. I don't think I'd have the willpower to go vegan because I love cheese and milk. Pizza. Come on.

  • snapeful@xanga

rofl that IS what i eat every day.... minus boba because some shops use dairy in the milk tea and i'm lactose intolerant so i just go to the ones with non-dairy products (usualy they sub soy milk instead) PLUS IT'S SO EXPENSIVE NOWADAYS OAMDFASKL it's like $3!!! i wish it was like $1-$2 :(

and omg i <3 edamame. detest sushi but love edamame.

I am a vegetarian.  I would have a hard time going vegan because of cheese.  I can do without most other dairy products, but real cheese is just too good.  I had some amazing chevre in my dinner tonight; it wouldn't've been the same without it.

The foods that are currently high on my list are whole wheat products, rice milk, seasonal fruit, and vegetables like zucchinis, tomatoes, onions and bell peppers (since they can be put into so many different things).

im vegeterian and i eat everything, just no meat... and it's not hard for me at all! but i couldnt go vegan - i cant live without cheese or yogurt (even though i dont drink milk either)

  • EboniYoYo@xanga

    I've been a vegetarian since I was 15, I'm 18 now.

  • sarahkim88@xanga

I'm not a stict vegetarian or vegan...but I stay away from dairy if possible and I eat fish every so often. But in my eyes, I'm a vegan for most of the part.

I love being a vegan! I used to like/eat dairy & eggs until I found out how my cholesterol level go UP. I'm not a fan of cheese because of the fat and cholesterol.... and once I knew my cholesterol level was going up, I gave up the dairy and eggs in no time. I thank God for man's original garden of Eden diet! =]

As a vegetarian for nearly six years (and a vegan for uh...one day) I can testify that eating as a veg*n is incredibly easy.  For me I prefer lots of lentils, bananas, and bananas.  In addition, I am a big fan of fruit- think berries and grapes.

  • Mercredi@lovelyish

I think yous shoukd eat these... even if you're not a vegetarian. it's important to eat different things. I'm considering vegetarianism. I'm not but... I almost never eat meat (I can't remember the last time I ate meat)

  • Girly_vegan@xanga

I'm veggie, and I love pasta (omg, we have so many pasta dishes that we have created at home, it's not even funny), fruits and veggies (basially any kind makes me happy), Chocolate soy milk, home made fries, and SO much more :)

My favorite dish is Mock-Sheperd's Pie :) YUMMY

    What a great topic!

I'm a vegan and I eat pizza, ice cream, muffins, cookies, cakes. Of course I can't eat just that so I also fill up on beans, veggies, fruits, and grains. I've learned how to cook tofu and tempeh in a variety of ways, and I sometimes make mock "chicken" and "sausage" - it's really just about the spices you use :)

Cheese was the last thing I gave up too. But when I learned how the veal industry exists because of the dairy industry (they had to think up some way to profit on those male baby cows!) it was easy to do. There's a new vegan cheese on the market called "Daiya" that is excellent for melting - I highly recommend checking it out.

I actually eat a lot more variety of foods as a pesca-vegetarian than I did when I ate more meat. I'm open to new foods and don't rely on the same old boing things I used to. I eat seafood a few times a week, but otherwise I eat vegetarian. I love anything Kashi and I've been on a lentil soup kick lately. Sweet potatoes are one of my favorites. I love marinating tofu with Mrs. Dash's salt-free marinades and cooking it and putting it over brown rice or whole gran pasta. I'll also use those fake chicken strips (Quorn brand are the best in my opinion) and just substitute them into any dish that calls for real chicken. I think coconut fake chicken was the best result. Whether or not you eat meat, it's so important to get a balanced diet with a lot of fruit, veggies and whole grains. When I was 14, I didn't eat meat, but I relied on a lot of pasta and candy bars. I was vegetarian, but gained about 50 pounds. Now, at 24,  I'm back to a healthy weight and try to eat as well as I can and keep a variety of healthy foods around so I don't get bored.

@Girly_vegan@xanga - mmm the mock shepherd's pie that Amy's Kitchen makes is delicious. Do you have a recipe for a home-made one?

  • direwolf005@xanga

@Julia - Thanks I'll have to try that out. I'm not a vegan. I still eat seafood and dairy, but I've been thinking of becoming one. I love cheese so much though!

  • xSerendipity713x@xanga

I'm a vegetarian and I eat a lot of vegetarian burgers, chicken, sausage..Any kind of meat replacement things basically, since it gives you protien. I've always loved pasta, so that hasn't changed at all. I eat salads..Fruits..Junk food. Not a whole lot other than stopping eating real meat has changed in my diet.
In restaurants it is a bit harder. Every place you go has salad though..So that's always an option if nothing else sounds good. When I'm out usually I get that, or pasta..Sometimes they have sandwhiches or tacos without meat too..So it's really not too bad.

I've been a vegetarian going on ten years, but  my husband became a vegetarian only last year.  Its so much more fun with both of us being vegetarian because we are constantly finding new recipes and new ingredients to try.  We try to buy local and seasonally most of the time, so what we eat the most changes as the season do.

    Common summer dishes:

cous cous salad with tomatoes, mint and feta.

    curried wheatberry waldorf salad

fresh basil, tomatoe and swiss cheese on whole wheat (or be fancy and put it on crackers for parties)

Combining fresh herbs, fruits, cheeses and veggies in interesting ways.  Who knew watermelon tasted so good with cheddar?

Fall and winter brings in the really hearty soups.  Any veggies we have on hand (we want to do a lot more canning to try to keep local), plus grains and herbs.  Wheatberry vegetable stew is a real winner around here.  Fresh pizza with homemade sauce (meaning, sans all that sodium and crap from the ready-made stuff) and veggie toppings.

    I'm getting hungry...

  • blowme_raspberries@xanga

love the soy milk and rice.

you can add fruits and veggies to the list! yum.

I used to eat 90% meat and 10% everything else.

Now I eat 90% vegetables, fruits and grains and 10% everything else.

It's an amazing feeling.  Once you make a lifestyle switch in your head, you almost don't WANT to eat meat anymore.  And this is coming from someone who used to eat 48oz Porterhouse Steaks.  It's like now it's not hard to enjoy Vegetarian dishes -- something I never thought I'd ever say.

As a result of this, I've been creating a lot of Vegetarian dishes and I'm trying to convince people that you CAN make appealing Vegetarian and even Vegan food.

  • chow@ireallylikefood

@methodElevated@xanga - Okay, THAT is an incredible sandwich that Giada makes.  It's one that I make for myself quite a lot, and one that I use to demonstrate to people that you don't need meat in a sandwich for it to taste good.  In fact, NOT having meat in a sandwich showcases the other flavors that often get washed out by the meat -- I love showing people this :)

  • methodElevated@xanga

@chow@ireallylikefood - Oh, definitely.  I posted a picture of one I made on my blog.  (There's another photo of a second one, but it turned out a little blurry.)  Giada never steers me wrong.  Her herb stuffed tomatoes are another favorite of mine.

  • chow@ireallylikefood

@methodElevated@xanga - Wow, very nice :)  I like the look of the stacked Insalata Caprese you have in there too.

You know, there's actually a Stuffed Tomato dish that's coming up soon in my entry queue -- I might have gotten it from Giada, I'm not sure.  I know I get a lot of influence from her.  It's stuffed with Herbed Chevre and a Wild Mushroom Medley.  Is this the one?
