Boo For Smokers, Yay For Non-Smokers
Smokers in NY won’t be too pleased with Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s new anti-smoking measures. Despite the previous ban on smoking in public areas such as, restaurants and bars, Mike Bloomberg is now trying to ban smoking in parks and at beaches. According to The New York Times, this would affect over 1,700 parks, playgrounds, and recreational facilities.
Naturally, there are people who are completely for and against this new plan. According to AM New York, a lot of smokers believe “Mike Bloomberg’s nanny government” has taken away their “free will.” However, as a non-smoker, I am hoping this new approach will reduce secondhand smoke and possibly decrease air pollution. (I personally hate it when people walking by me blow their cigarette smoke in my direction, and I basically inhale all of it).
What do you think about this new plan? Do you think it’s going to help reduce the number of smokers?

i think is slightly drastic they should have designated smoking areas in parks and stuff but not ban it all together although i completely agree with not smoking in restaurants and stuff even as a smoker there is nothing worse then the smell of musty old cigarettes.
i support most of his laws but this is a bit much
As a non smoker, I feel that this plan's pretty beneficial to the environment and the health of others.
:)
yay! i get a shout out! i dont smoke and I know it is very wrong. i will never take the path to drugs.
i'm all for it.
smokers should smoke in their own homes and cars, and any other private area or area where they are alone. i hate walking into the mall and having to inhale the cigarette smoke because soooo many people smoke right at the entrance.
smoke away from the rest of us. we're not going to go out of our way to let you smoke your cigarette. :)
I'm a non-smoker but I disagree. In open air environments like parks & beaches, I dont mind. I may walk into it but it'll pass. Yes, even smokers have rights. HOWEVER, some smokers are nasty & ignorant & leave their buds around for kids to pick up & animals to choke on & blatently ignore the designated signs & trash cans so maybe they should ban it, if nothing else the places are cleaner.
I think they should have some space. After all, these are wide, open, and most importantly, public areas. While I am a non-smoker and everyone in my direct family is a non-smoker (my grandfather quit smoking cold turkey after 20 years - I respect that a lot and maybe that's brought me to expect at least an effort from others I know), and I do wish for everyone's health that all smokers would quit, I can't control that and I don't think it's right of us to force that either.
I think telling people not to smoke everywhere is getting a bit drastic. My friend has allergic reactions to cigarette and cigar smoke where her throat begins to close up. As long as it's an area where others aren't consistently forced to walk through, they should be able to keep it.
Oh christ, you really want to go picking that fight again?
I don't like smoking but they shouldn't take away the right to smoke..if they want to smoke just let them smoke some place else.
more hippie bullshit. to the contrary the tree's don't mind. second hand smoke doesn't do squat outdoors. when people get outta breath it's the rest of america getting lazier, the same way fat is ok.
1. You're a bitch for bringing it up again. God.
2. As a smoker I'm still up for banning smoking in extremely public places like beaches. Parks? Not so much. Guess it would depend on the park. Real smokers know where they can smoke in peace without the self righteous assholes such as yourself putting your face in their business all the fucking time.
I think for outdoor places there should be a designated smoking area. for indoor places I can totally understand banning it.
@soyeahthatswhathappened@xanga - Just the same: smokers aren't going to go out of THEIR way so you don't throw a bitch fit in a place where they're ALLOWED to smoke.
umm it's outdoors -____- i understand sheltered covering but not out in the open air
btw when will this self-righteous OMG I DONT SMOKE N I KNO ITZ RONG PPL WHO DO IT R JERKSSZZ!!! shit stop? we aren't 12-year-old girls.
As a proud New Yorker I think its great. I know smokers have rights and blah blah blah but natural areas such as parks and beaches that are frequented by children and people doing recreational activities should not be subjected to cigs and the smoke.
And I also have to say that it disturbs me very much to see someone stick a cig in their mouth while outside in the sun in 100 degree weather.
i'd support it. they have bans like that in some cities where i live.
@The_Aimed_Wanderer@xanga - That's a bit extreme. It seems like instead of trying to come to a compromise with the situation, the mayor is just flat out banning smoking in public areas. Even in BIG cities, like Tokyo, they aren't allowed to smoke on the public streets, but they give the smokers a place to smoke. The designated smoking areas would give the smokers a place to enjoy THEMSELVES (yes, smokers do enjoy being able to do what they like to do, just like anyone else visiting a park) and it lets the parents of the children you're so worried about know where the smokers are so they don't have to pass their kids by the smoke. Is that so much to ask for? As for your latter comment, it's not for you to understand. If you don't like it and don't want to do it, then that's fine, but don't pass judgement on other people. We all have our vices. At least for the smokers, it's a legal vice.
I hate New Yorkers. Anything to torture them more, yay.
@snapeful@xanga - @BunnyParfait@xanga - cursing at the messenger is immature. Mayor Bloomberg made these measures, not the author of this post.It is possible to disagree without being disrespectful. Nasty habits...nasty attitudes.
Ok, now I'm done playing devil's advocate. I think this measure is extreme. I don't think it will help decrease the # of smokers, because this plan will not encourage current smokers to stop. Nonetheless it may further deter some nonsmokers (in NYC) from ever starting, which is great. The reasons to quit smoking, just like the reasons to lose weight, are pretty consistent. People stop smoking out of concerns for their own health (specifically when given ultimatums by Dr.'s b/cuz of health risks), for their close family, and mayb (in rare cases) to get the guy or girl. Not because of rules enforced by cities.
@BunnyParfait@xanga - they should. i'm not the only non-smoker in new york, in fact i think we're the majority, so that means they should be going out of their way to find a place where we don't have to inhale their cancer.
It'll reduce smoking in those areas but not neccesarily smoking...
Putting all these bans on where people can smoke without giving them a designated smoking area seems wrong. Bans like these won't reduce the number of smokers, it'll just annoy them.
@maybmaybnot@xanga - Stuff a cock in it.
@soyeahthatswhathappened@xanga - Oh you're playing the majority rule bull shit. That kind of thinking lead to the Holocaust dip shit I highly doubt you want to use that excuse again. And no, smokers are people too and they DON'T have to accommodate themselves to your bitchy little needs. Don't like smelling it? Fuck off.
Sounds like a good idea, honestly. Parks and beaches are places where kids play... I don't know about you, but I don't want someone blowing smoke in my kids' faces.
all that has to happen is that weed has to be legalized and the tobacco companies will be over.
shit, I would be a lot happier with a Newport box of spliffs instead of cigarettes
smoking is probably one of the nastiest habbits- and probably one of the most addictive. i do believe, however, there should be designated smoking areas for those poor souls, such as myself, who are seemingly hopelessly addicted to cigarettes. but more importantly, i think more funds should be directed to those who want and/or have tried to quit. - and i think the money should come from the tobacco companies, without passing the expense on to the consumer. for years, and this was proven in court, [if you ever have seen the movie 'the insider' - it's a true story] the tobacco companies have been using a method called amonio-chemistry to alter the effects of the nicotine so it works like a drug, intentionally making cigarettes addicive. it's time they be held accountable!
