  • Do You Have OCD?

Have you ever heard someone say 'I'm soo OCD' or 'I must have OCD or something'?

Well, obviously not all people mean it literally. If they did, they'd have a serious problem on their hands. People who suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder fall under different catergories.

Obsessions usually have a theme. For example:

    - Fear of germs/dirt
    - Having things orderly
    - Aggressive impulses
    - Sexual thoughts that cannot be controlled

    Some obsessions include:

    - Washing hands constantly
    - Hair pulling
    - Disturbing images of hurting a loved one
    - Distress when things are disorderly

Compulsions also have a theme. For example:

    - Cleaning/washing
    - Counting
    - Checking
    - Doing the same thing repeatedly

    Some Compulsions include:

    - Constantly checking to make sure the door is locked/things are shut off
    - Hands becoming raw from washing
    - Counting your steps
    - Hoarding items of little or no value
    - Eating food in a specific order

After reading this, do you think you have this disorder, or do you know you have it? Do you know someone who does? If you have it, do you get sick of people "making fun" of OCD by constantly insisting that they have it when they really don't?

I know I have it lol. I went to therapy for over a year when I was like 10 years old but it didn't help me at all. I have learned to live with it, but some days it really takes over. I do soooo many things that people just look at me like I am some kind of freak. Oh well. Love me.

Yeah, I have it. It runs in my family. I used to wash my hands a lot. Like several times an hour but I just got in the habit of not touching things with the palm of my hands as often.

Mostly it's being organized. I can't handle having a messy desk or house. I can't leave the house with dishes in the sink or clothes in the dryer. I don't mind other people having messy shit as long as it's not mine. I've been prescribed Klonopin, Wellbutrin and Adderall to help with depression anxiety and panic disorder mostly associated with my OCD.

But it's really not that bad as long as I don't try to fight it.

I already know I have CDO. Its like OCD, but the letter are in order like they are suppose to be.

    Does that answer your question.

  • sick_of_dreams@xanga

No but OCD does fall under anxiety disorder which I do have.

  • FIREExATxWILL@xanga

I have a lot of anxiety and my shrink says that sometimes I show OCD tendencies. I find those habits to be really annoying, I couldn't imagine actually having it.

I've been diagnosed with OCD.  It's a lot milder now than it used to be, thank goodness, but I still need to do things in threes, have objects in straight lines, have things "look right", etc.

Not quite.  I have obsessive compulsive tendencies, I was told.  For example, my closet is organized by the type of shirt (sleeveless, dressy, plan tees, graphic tees, and those regular old t-shirts); each of these 'sections' are organized by color (white, black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple); they all have to face the same way and the hangers have to be going the hooked the same way.  I've tried to let up a little and don't really organize it more than that; I used to go as far as organizing each color by shade....like each section of red was in order from the lightest pink to the darkest red.  Now I really like my closet to stay organized.  If I don't have time to put away clothes in this order they will stay lying on my chest until I have time to 'place them in their appropriate spot.'  It annoys me when it's not organized, drives me nuts when others put away my clothes and it's 'not in the right spot.'  My friends used to get a kick out of rearranging shirts here and there.  Although it annoys me when it is not organized, I am able to proceed with my day and simply reorganize it when I have time.  There is no irrational fear of something bad happening if it is not organized and it does not consume my life.  Therefore, I only have OCD tendencies, but was never diagnosed with OCD.  There was a point when a therapist told me to keep an eye on these habits because there was a possibility that I turn it into a true compulsion that I had no control over.  I've lightened up since then, but my closet still remains oddly organzied.  =D

I've been thinking lately that i do have OCD. For as long as a can remember, everytime im a passenger on a car i have a tendency of counting the lines that seperate the lanes in a highway or whatnot. Everytime i go up a flight of stairs i count how many stairs i go up. I do this all mentally and when someone tries to talk to me in the process of doing it i get a little frustrated!

  • mightaswellbefamous@xanga

    Yes and no.
with certain things I think I do.. It doesn't take over my life by any means.
I do have a tendency to count my steps, especially if I am walking in the dark? No idea, at first I don't realize I'm doing it.
If I eat candy like M&Ms or skittles I have to take them all out of the bag separate them by color, then I will eat the ones will the less amount first.
And I'm really bad with germs, if I feel like my hands are dirty I have to wash them. I can't stand when someone sneezes or just out right coughs, I get extremely grossed out and go into what my mom calls "freak out" mode. Which to me is a mini panic attack. I hate door handles, public bathrooms, shopping carts, ect. I Lysol my own bedroom on a regular basis, door knobs, dresser knobs, my remote, computer keys, the banister on the stairs, anything that gets touched on a regular basis gets Lysol-ed on a regular basis.

I used to have really bad panic attacks after being on depression medicine, they're a lot better now.
But I would just all of a sudden freak out and start rocking. I found humming to myself would calm myself down because I would focus on the rhythm of my humming instead of being panicked. So now when I feel like I'm going to have one, I listen to classical music and it calms me before it can get out of hand.

I think I have OCD, though it's not as extreme as it used to be. I check locks, wash my hands a lot, and really need to have "balance". I have routines I must follow or else I need to redo everything. But thankfully, my OCD isn't as bad as it used to be.

  • darkfallen@xanga

I know I have OCD. Sometimes it is very mild (I always count my steps, keep things orderly, etc.), but when I get very stressed with things out of control, it gets much worse. I don't get annoyed with people saying they have OCD when they don't so much as I get annoyed with people that don't believe I have OCD or find it fun to mess with it. A lot of people in college thought it extremely funny that I had to have all of my silverware and dishes set up a certain way when I ate, and they would flip my silverware and move things throughout the entire meal to the point I would get so stressed out I couldn't eat and had to just put my dishes away. They would also move thing in my room, living room, etc. whenever I left to see if I was 'really OCD' and would notice. So...if someone says they have OCD, even if they don't...leave them alone!!! >.<

  • nerdishh8D@xanga

Hahaha. Just look at my room, and you could tell I don't have OCD. ^_^

  • Mac_Libureet@xanga

I dont like how everyone claims they have OCD and i've been asked if I have OCD ...but i dont, I just like things in there place because I work at a library straitening shelves!!

  • discover_hienie@xanga

hehe i have been having ocd.. i heard everyone usually does. lol  it's hard to control for me and i am still on medication for it

  • wyrdkismet@xanga

nope. but i do have OCB.

  • Ulma@xanga

OCD tendencies. Not much. Not diagnosed or anything because it doesn't hinder me that much.
I eat my food in a specific order, I wash my hands and face crazy much, and ALWAYS brush my teeth 3 times in the evenings.

  • mewithoutu77@xanga

i don't think it's ocd to the extreme but i have a tendency of washing my hands over and over again.

  • abh816@xanga

Funny how so many people are claiming to have OCD. It's actually a rare disorder. Liking things to be organized and washing your hands a lot does NOT mean you have OCD.

  • ironic_vertigo@xanga

I think it's the only disorder I don't have. Hah.

  • lesley_redd@xanga

I do hoard a bit so yes I think it is a mild OCD I have.

  • itsallforgotten@xanga

I have full fledged OCD. I hate people who joke about it, I hate people who claim they have it because they "wash their hands constantly". I wash my hands as much as a normal person does, but I have other things that characterize me as obsessively compulsive. It destroys and takes over lives, and if you really do have it, you'll know what I mean. I don't flaunt it, because no one believes I really have it. They say I should just get over it. Some mind-over-matter shit. Right now all I can do is deal with the shit. I don't have the money nor insurance to get medical attention for anything, including OCD. It's a burden. It really is. It frustrates me to no end.

long story short, yes i have OCD, i don't know anyone else that does have it, and yes I get sick of people making fun of it/acting like they have it.

  • kriskris92@xanga

@blue_dragonfly420@xanga - That pretty much describes me lol. My desk is like that, too. I have one little drawer for pencils and erasers, with all the pencils facing the same direction, and another little drawer for pens, in order from black to green to red to blue, all the same direction, again. My friends all joke that I have OCD, but I know I don't really, I just have some characteristically OCD tendencies, like you said. Thankfully, it doesn't have much of an effect on my life, but if my desk isn't organized, I can't work. at all. lol. =]

  • SmilingThoughts@xanga

@blue_dragonfly420@xanga -  haha my closet is exactly the same way. hmm.

@mightaswellbefamous@xanga - i was taking this certain medication for something not related to OCD at all, and i was always so scared i was going to have an allergic reaction and my throat would close up, that i seriously had panic attacks every night before going to bed.

@abh816@xanga - true, but people still can be on medication for OCD tendencies. people can be extremely organized, and freak out when things arent, but you're right, that doesnt mean they have the disorder.
