MorningStar Foods: A Good Vegetarian Alternative?
Recently I've been told I need to cut out meats from my diet due to health issues that I have along with my family's history. I like meat and fish, so it's extremely hard to let go of it even though I know I need to.
So, I went online to look for other sources of "meat-like" tasting products. As I was perusing the pages that yahoo popped up on "meat substitutes," I food this food product line called MorningStar Farms. This was funny because I thought it was a regular meat product when I saw it in stores... boy was I wrong!
Since I was curious, I went to the store and bought some products from this company:
1. Chik'n
2. Mushroom Burgers
3. Bacon and Sausage
4. Hotdogs
My overall experience with eating their products, I give it a huge thumbs up! The taste isn't chalky like I was expecting it to be, and the taste was so similar to the taste of meat that it fooled my dad! He's a huge meat eater and he couldn't even tell the difference.
Have you ever had this anything from this vegetarian food line before? Are MorningStar products nutritionally rich or are they lacking in certain areas?

Their chik'n buffalo wings, griller's prime burgers, black bean burgers, veggie hot dogs, chik'n strips and veggie burger crumbles are all good. I don't like their sausages or bacon strips at all. The bacon smells good when it's being cooked, but it doesn't taste good and has a bizarre texture. The sausage is pretty convincing, but I never liked sausage even when I ate meat. I haven't tried their other products.
My omnivorous boyfriend greatly prefers their imitation chicken to the real thing, and he thinks my vegetarian lasagna that includes the veggie burger crumbles is the best lasagna he's ever tried. When I first made it, he was confused as to why I was eating ground beef. lol He didn't know it wasn't real meat, like your dad.
Morning Star is a good product. When I became a vegetarian 5 years ago, that's what i started out with. Idk why but I can tell the difference pretty well between veggie "chicken",etc and real stuff. Sometimes it can fool me though. But anyway, after a while I stopped eating a lot because when you think about it, it's still freezer food and stuck to cooking home made vegetarian meals and started buying packs of tofu. But we still buy some of thier products from time to time. Good luck with your new diet, it's not that hard of a change.
Fact: I like their chik'n almost more than actual chicken haha. I HATED their burgers though. I never really tried anything else.
I agree the products are good, but the texture is nothing like meat. The sausages have a very convincing meat taste, but not a convincing meat feel. There are also better tasting brands out there, but they are more expensive.
If I were to do the vegetarian thing again, I would avoid these overly processed products and only eat them on occasion. I like my homemade stuff a lot better.
they're LOADED with salt =/ i think the best thing to do is get or make tofu and prepare your own meat substitutes
I never liked morning star.
I think their chik'n patties were ok, but that was the only thing i liked.
there's another brand, Quorn, I think, that has amazing imitation chicken.
You seriously can't tell a difference.
Haha, I pretty much live on this stuff. I LOVE their veggie burgers, and loved them even before I turned vegetarian.
I never been crazy about MorningStar, I prefer LightLife.
If you live near a Whole Foods you have to try their 'General Tso's Vegan Chicken', you get it at the deli counter, it was so good I thought they fucked up and gave me real chicken.
I love Morningstar. My only gripe with them is they don't make anything vegan.
I usually use MorningStar products. I usually use the "chick'n strips" or "meat" crumbles and have that with veggies and rice. I honestly don't think any of their products actually taste like meat - I stopped eating meat originally just because I didn't like it.
ZOMG!!! As a Vegan I love the non-cheese stuff!
they are really good! You should try the spicy black bean burgers and also the pork bbq riblets, they are my favorites.
I love love love MorningStar and Boca products. I prefer a homemade vegetarian meal, but when I don't have the time or I have to eat on the go, MorningStar products = easy way to still be nutritious. I don't think that the products taste like meat though. I stopped eating meat because I didn't like the taste/texture.
Morningstar sucks. Go with Gardenburger, Boca and Amy's. Oh and Lightlife.
I've had MorningStar before. Just becareful with the sodium!
I don't know if they're nutritionally rich, but they sure are tasty! I've had the chicken nuggets and the burgers and they are really tasty. But looking at the super long list of ingredients makes me skeptical of whether they are healthy enough to be eaten on the regular basis.
Morning Star is the shizz.
Their breakfast sausage patties are hella good!

I tried griller's prime burgers from MorningStar and cheeseburgers from Boca. I've just started trying things like this though to cut some meat out. I thought MorningStar>Boca hands down, but it may have just been the 2 versions that I tried and not so much the brand.
love it, just had some of the "chicken" nuggets today! they're amazing. not vegan though :/
Morningstar is good when I'm craving meat substitutes
Try the mini corndogs, their amazing!!and the sausage patties are a lot better than the links... the sausage links actually made me want to vomittttI don't know if its nutritionally rich or lacking but you shouldn't eat just meat substitutes all the time mix it up to make sure you're getting everything you need
morning star isn't bad. great alternative if you don't want to eat meat.
@PetiteGigi@xanga - I completely agree with you on Whole Foods Vegan General Tso's
That said, I really like Morningstar. You have to be careful though if you are also considering cutting out dairy as a good chunk of their breaded stuff has milk or whey in it. Gardenburger also makes really good riblets that both my boyfriend and I like much more than the real thing (the actual burgers not so much though)
Those bacon strips are delish. A restaurant I go to pairs it with goat cheese for their "BLT" sandwich. Yum!
Never tried Morning Star, I don't think they have it over here. But I do like Sanitarium. Just have to remember they're a sometimes food. Nice for a treat, not particularly great for you (although no worse the eating say normal sausages or bacon or even a low end chicken burger).
