My Hometown's Fight to Beat Breast Cancer

I live in a little town called Lowell. Not big at all, but the people who live here have the kindest hearts of anyone I've ever known.
Last year, on September 12, 2008 all the players on Lowell High School's varsity football team, the Lowell Red Arrows, sported light pink jerseys with a name of a loved one or friend who had fought cancer, or had been lost to it. Of course, the 42-0 win against Holland was important, but what my community did in their own little fight against cancer was far more meaninful. 7,000 fans (including myself) crowded into the little stadium coloring the night pink with the light pink shirts that said 'Arrow Force - Pink Arrow Pride.' Along with pink goal posts, pink popcorn, pink paint on the field, pink windbreakers and balloons, breast cancer pins, pink band outfits pink thundersticks... It was a sea of pink.
Being the committed and determined little town we are, we raised a whopping $93,000 for cancer charities last year. Pretty impressive, right? Well, not as impressive as what we're hoping to accomplish this year. We will continue our "pink arrow pride," and are hoping to raise TWICE THE AMOUNT OF MONEY towards cancer charities, and all proceeds go to the charities of course.
It means a lot to me that my whole town cares so much about the fight against cancer.
Have you ever participated in any cancer awareness events? Do you think that cancer is a top concern in the health industry?

i love this post. i run for cancer all the time when there's local events. i started in elementary when i did the terry fox run. i lost a lot of my relatives to cancer, its genetic, so you can say i have more of a reason to participate - i do it because i care. <3
That is so awesome! I love this post and I love your town!! Real men wear pink!!! Especially when it's for a good cause. ^_~
I haven't ever participated in an event for cancer, but I've been lately thinking about getting more involved in causes. Breast cancer is certainly one of them, because just like so many people breast cancer has touched my family as well.
As for whether I think this is a top priority/concern in health care...well I don't think it is. But, I think it should be. Not that I think it should be the only one on the top list, but it should definitely be there! If we just try hard enough, we can find cures for so MANY things that are such a problem. Awareness for them and money to fund those searching diligently for cures are very important.
I'm actually going to show this post to friends. :) This is such a totally awesome thing that your town is doing. :)
That's pretty damn awesome! BIG PROPS TO YOU AND YOUR TOWN!!
