Soy or Skim Milk...That Is the Question...
I’ve been a soy milk addict for a few years now. I always start my day off with a bowl of cereal and soy milk (my favorite meal and time of the day!), and I also drink several cups throughout the day. I’ve tasted a couple of different brands of soy milk so far, but the one I like the most is Silk. It has all these different kinds of flavors to choose from, plus, I love how it has that “silky” taste. Since I’m not big into sugar, I always go for either the unsweetened or light flavored ones.
I’ve always been the type of person who loves just about any kind of soy product, but never really drank soy milk until I came to the city and had that first taste. I think it was mostly because a lot of Korean soy milks are usually sugary, so I always went for skim milk when I was living in South Korea.
As I was enjoying my bowl of cereal with soy milk again this morning, I started to wonder if drinking ONLY soy milk and not consuming skim milk is good for your body (because that’s what I’ve been doing for a little over a year now). I’m not saying I haven’t drunk skim milk at all for over a year, but definitely not enough; when I add it up, I would say it probably amounts to only two cups. I figure soy milk has a lot of protein, it is full of vitamins, has little saturated fat, no cholesterol, and basically as many health benefits as milk has, or possibly even more. So I’m not sure if I need to balance it up by drinking skim milk as well.
What do you guys think? Are you more of a soy milk or skim milk person? Do you think it’s necessary to balance it up?

Soy milk all the way...lactose intolerant.
Soy milk, soy is a complete protein, I don't think you're missing out on anything good. Plus I'm vegan.
I hate milk. Yuck. And when I have it, it's whole milk which I know is supposed to kill you (SARCASM), but whatever.
Soymilk is so good! I've recently become addicted to it. One glass to start my day off EVERY monring! =)
Hmm, no idea, I've never looked into the nutrition. I imagine you can get away with not drinking milk though, considering how most of Asia didn't consume dairy products for a long time, and they seem to be doing all right.
I drink both, but more milk than soy milk. I only drink soy milk when my mom makes it, I rarely buy any.
Soy Milk actually tastes good. I make and drink my own Soy Milk. Skim however just tastes like Milk+Water, which is not very appetizing.
I'm a 2% drinker though.
I can't stand either. :( Cow milk makes me feel sick and soy milk has this odd aftertaste that I can't get used to. I'm doomed health-wise with my lack of calcium intake.
I'm pretty sure milk is not an essential part of the diet. The calcium is, but you can get that from other sources.
Milk is so gross.
Soy milk is so good. Especially the REAL kind.
silk soymilk is WAAAAY better for you than milk. HUMANS ARE NOT DESIGNED TO DRINK MILK AFTER INFANCY.
skim all the way...soy anything makes me sick.
I only like one specific brand of soy milk (it's called President's Choice Organic - kind of a no name brand). But, I have phases. I'm in a skim milk drinking phase. But i'll probably get back into the soy milk soon. I like variety, so drinking the same thing all the time is boring.
I wonder, does Soy Milk have vitamin D in it?
Milk is really food for baby cows. There's not any reason for humans to feel obligated to drink it. I switch between soy, almond, rice, and oat milk.
I go for skim, because soy milk taste like lice shampoo smells to me. Bleh.
It never used to be like this but I can only drink soy milk now because I get stomach pains anytime I try to digest milk of any sort.
sooooy :D
@X_Beautifully_Fragile_X@xanga - i hope i never smell it, i don't wanna lose my taste for it. =/
I haven't had soy milk in a long time. I usually drink skim.
i love soy milk =D
I would rather mix it up. Although, I prefer the consistency and taste of soy milk over the watered-down skim milk.
It also gives those boring bran flakes some zing, along with adding some fruit to the bowl. Mmm.
Ya I only drink Silk Soy usually Light Vanilla. I'm lactose intolerant so ya...but even if I weren't I NEVER liked the flavor of milk!
@irish__dreams@xanga - lice shampoo does NOT smell like soy milk! lice shampoo has a very very distinct smell that you can smell for weeks on a person who has used it. So have no fear!
i think its the amount of calcium u hv to make sure of yrself getting enuf every day.
since one should hv no problem w/ whether takin in enuf amount of protein except for those whor vegans.
Soy milk all the way! It sucks, the soy milk in my city tastes gross. I have to go to Chinatown to get fresher, delicious soy milk. <3 I personally wouldn't feel the need to balance.
I'm allergic to milk. Well all dairy. If I drink it I get super fatigued. Like I'll only be able to lay around for days and not be able to really get up. I'll also get congested. And my muscles ache, hurt, and feel cramped, it feels like I have fibromyalgia. My brain and thinking gets super cloudy. I didn't realize all these years that it was dairy. It got worse and worse as I got older until I was seriously starting to think I had some disease or something. I had my first soy milk a few weeks ago. I love the stuff. I also drink the Silk brand.
soy, i'm vegan.
but even long before i turned vegan i'd get soy whenever i went w/ my mom to vons AND remembered.
XD.
soy milk - i like it sweet :)
